I'd say it's been marketed as a hybrid device that does both. I see people playing it handheld in the marketing way more. So a handheld primarily that can dock to a screen. A handheld considerably more powerful than their hugely successful 3DS. Sounds like a good strategy!

I look forward to receiving my dead gimmick console and playing the poo poo out of it. Getting hyped for Zelda. Honestly I'm really excited just to use the console.

I'll probably spend the first hour just loving the dock/ un-dock feeling. Really teasing that dock. Putting the Switch almost all the way in, but at the last second pulling out.

The thing is clearly designed as a handheld. All the guts are in the portable parts of the thing, it had to accept a bunch of design limitations for the sake of portability, and the part that makes it 'a home console' is functionally a charging socket and a TV out.

That is why I'm interested in the Switch at all.

 at the goon calling the Switch's death by gimmick and low power.

The Wii U was not abandoned by third party because of its relative low power. It was abandoned because it was very difficult to develop for and had a gimmicky controller that they would have to specifically address. It was also abandoned because of its relatively low install base, not its relatively low power. Why would a developer want to have a very difficult time making a game for just a tiny fraction of their potential customers?

Nintendo already discussed Switch development and that it supports Unity and Unreal. They mentioned that it would take less than a year for a team to port over a game made for PC.

The console has no obvious gimmick. Portability isn't a gimmick. It's literally just you can use this thing wherever you loving feel like it. Or on a TV if you prefer. A developer doesn't have to do anything to account for that if they don't want to.

As far as install base might go, this is still a wait-and-see thing. However, didn't Google Trends just reveal that the phrase "preorder switch" nearly reached PS4 interest, looking back at its preorder phase?

I still think its shining accomplishment is that it is a portable home console. The dock is easy to carry, the controllers are small, and it will travel to (rooftop) parties easily

I don't even want to move the Wii U with all the hassle of moving its hard drive, its cables, the console's cables, the Gamepad, its charger and secondary controller chargers, 9 million batteries for your Wii remotes

The Switch is the charger for the controllers, has its memory on board, and has just two wires. And all the poo poo works with my phone charger. Beautiful.

Pretty much. Third parties couldn't be arsed to come up with ways to use the Wii U gamepad properly. It was always "I dunno, put a map there" or "it is the inventory screen."
Or it was like Bayonetta 2 and it was just exactly what was happening on the TV.

Ubisoft tried, bless their hearts, with that thing where you have to look away from the main screen unpaused to fiddle with your inventory, which was a surprisingly creative idea in a survival horror kinda game, but it was still just a menu screen. Almost nobody tried to use its potential for asymmetric multiplayer.

Switch, by comparison, has one screen, a relatively sane controller layout (insert 12-page derail about d-pads here), and its most complicated features appear to be tilt controls and HD Rumble, both of which are extremely optional. It also supports Unity and Unreal Engine out of the gate.

Uh, the low power was a huge part of developers staying away. It meant the big multiplats they had on deck for 2013 and onward literally couldn't run on the thing. Instead of adding the WiiU to the pile of platforms to put out a binary for, they'd have to build special WiiU "exclusives" to put out anything for the thing that wasn't a reheated last-gen port.

LOL

You're wrong. It was absolutely abandoned because of its abysmal power first and foremost, and also because it was a bitch to develop for. It wasn't even possible to neuter games enough to make a playable port on the Wii U for major third party titles. Square has already come out and said they have no interest in porting FFXV because it would be completely gutted/unplayable.

Well, I said my piece and that will be all from me about it. It's obvious that no one agrees with what you're trying to add to the discussion here.

EDIT: To help the thread out a bit, here's an actual quote from the folks at Square Enix about FFXV.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/02/08/final-fantasy-xv-director-says-no-plans-for-nintendo-switch-version

quote:

There are no plans, it wouldn't run…" Tabata told DualShockers when asked if there's a possibility that Final Fantasy XV would release for Nintendo Switch. When pressed further about whether or not the game could run on the console, Tabata said "it might run," but the team hasn't "conducted the proper tests on whether it would run properly on Switch or not." As such, he said he couldn't provide a definitive answer.

Tabata went on to note that "there is interest in the platform among the development team," but reiterated that "there are no plans for Switch at the moment."

Square Enix already has several titles planned for release on Nintendo Switch. I Am Setsuna will be available on launch day, a few Dragon Quest games have been announced for the platform, and an entirely new RPG called Project Octopath Traveler was teased during the Nintendo Switch Presentation in January.

I agree with them. Putting out a last-gen console when all the third parties were gearing up for the next gen absolutely hosed the WiiU. This is so well established I'm honestly not sure how you're arguing against it.

Well that's horseshit because the guy above quoted you as well and agreed with what I said. You can't deny the specs of the Wii U were incapable of handling major third party releases. They're having a hard enough time getting them to run on Xbox One without neutering graphics fidelity completely, and the XOne is infinitely more powerful than the Wii U.

If you consider the switch as a hybridisation of the 3DS and Wii U ideas, rather than a Wii U successor, it looks a lot more promising.

Factor in that there will be launch Zelda and eventually a mainline Pokemon game on the Switch, install base is guaranteed.

If there's a slow launch, that means early adopters get a few freebies, Kimishima gets a temporary paycut and there's a new price point in a year.
