So uh, what's the potential punishment for PPG assuming he survives the civil war/that there's some sort of resolution to the war in our lifetime? I assume he'd be straight-up detained as a terrorist upon stepping foot in the US. In my home of Australia, our government has also just approved a measure that strips dual-nationals of their Australian citizenship if they're found to be an ISIS fighter (with framework to extend that to other 'terrorist' groups) - does the US gently caress with that sort of stuff?

The reason why he kept saying that he's not affiliated with the PKK is because they're on the Foreign Terrorist Organisations list. If they arrest him and say that he's PKK, he could be super-hosed and receive decades in prison.

Luckily, there's obviously a shitload of public documentation proving that he was only in the YPG, which isn't on the list. The YPG is also an ally of the US military and many of its American fighters are veterans, which significantly improves his chances. He'll probably get arrested on arrival and might end up on some sort of watch list, but I don't think he'll end up in Gitmo unless he gets really unlucky or the US bends over backwards for Turkey.

Jumped out at me immediately too. I've never felt like much of an identitarian but as a slovenly single white guy pushing 30 and still stuck scraping by at just under 20k, "failson" rung really true with me from the first time Matt defined it in that New Yorker article.

when my mom lived in Alaska she got a check from the govt as a share of the oil money or something like that. do they still do that these days? that sounds like a sweet deal, but then you'd have to live in a frozen wasteland.

alaska has no state income or sales tax because of our taxes on oil companies. those taxes go to the state operating budget and the permanent fund, and the permanent fund's earnings get distributed yearly in the form of cash, based on the earnings over the past 5 years. it started out in the 80s as like $300, and peaked at like $2100 when palin was in office and oil was over $150/barrel

the weird thing is, if you try to tell people that this is absolutely socialism they refuse to believe it, because that's a bad word, and up here we've all got some big ol' bootstraps

e: oil prices have plummeted, and the permanent fund is worth over $50b, but politicians who talk about touching it get raked over the coals. meanwhile our budget crisis is bonkers because we budgeted for $90/barrel oil and it's worth like $45 now

that would be a cool novel, but I think the difference is that Alaska isn't sitting atop an extremely large amount of young unemployable religious fanatics who will form terrorist plots to overthrow the monarchy if they are not placated. I mean Alaska has its share of Palin type people sure but realistically they are not going to be taking up arms and declaring independence.

if it wasn't for my wife's income being combined with mine is be at this level too. and it's nots for lack of trying -- I went back to school while working to make more money and got an associate's with honors and still make less than 40k unless I want to do hard time in a factory

My dad worked in at a GM plant where they would hire you on basically off the street in a union shop to make fifteen mid-eighties dollars an hour to push a broom and make sure you were reliable before hiring you on to a twenty-plus mid-eighties dollars an hour to work the line.

I'm a ~veteran~ who feels #blessed to make a bit shy of 40k in junior lower middle management a cube farm. Working in an industrial job with "good" starting pay and benefits by the standards of today would probably be a 20% pay cut from that.

He is a Trump supporter and basically doesn't seem to put together how bad the game has changed for everyone, even though he lived long enough to see the postwar heyday of labor and its gradual decline.

Makes me real sad.

When my libertarian dad bounced on us when I was a kid, he went to Alaska for just this reason. My mom had to take him to court to force him to file for the dividend to pay back child support. To my knowledge, he filed for it up until the point at which my mom sued, then stopped filing.

I liked when piss pig granddad vociferously denied any human rights violations by the ypg immediately after talking about serving alongside a cannibal who ate parts of his own unit's bodies and pieces of blasted apart corpses, and then bragged about fighting alongside child soldiers but he didnt personally consider them child soldiers because they're over 14. i also liked how much he made his unit of the ypg sound like white western communists engaging in war tourism

Outside of being a massive concern troll about it, like what's the worst case scenario for PPG? He's one of those terrible war tourists lookin' for a thrill and is taking precious food that could have been used to feed another person in a shelled out Syrian town? Sure it's a valid criticism, but if he's going around and marking out land mines to be disposed of? Eh, he got some faves and retweets on twitter in exchange for having spooks having a file on him, who cares?
