I like the hand-animated skeletons and early 3dsmax inverse kinematics, the show wouldn't be the same at all with mocap

this is a very good thread also the exact point the simpsons changed irrevocably for me is the part of trash of the titans where the trash is bursting up around town or whatever and the corpse of rodd and todds pet rabbit they had just buried shoot up out of the ground and they scream. It just seemed like a really hosed up, mean spirited joke that was really out of step with anything the show had done before

I would rather watch 5 clumsily-handled Family Guy episodes about domestic abuse than one new Simpsons episode. With everything to hate about South Park, at least it still has a lot of redeeming qualities after 20 years - at least some attempt at making an entertaining show; I don't know if I could appreciate that if I didn't have the Simpsons to compare it to.

Captain Lavender posted:I would rather watch 5 clumsily-handled Family Guy episodes about domestic abuse than one new Simpsons episode. I don't regularly watch it anymore but South Park still produces the occasional pretty funny episode, sometimes really funny ones. I don't know exactly why, but I guess maybe the (much) shorter time spent on each episode and the fact that the writing team and such is much smaller might work in its favor to sometimes produce something that's pretty funny, especially when its an episode with the kdis just being kids, or Randy doing something really stupid.

Every musical episode is cringe-inducingly bad. It's embarrassing to get caught watching them. Except the "Evita" one.

Last point about South Park still sometimes being good, every time there's a song it's fantastic. This is also part of why the South Park movie knocks the Simpsons movie out of the ballpark, because it's an amazing musical (it's also fantastically gay, but that's just another point in its favor). South Park also put out a really, really good game a couple of years back. Last fun Simpsons game I played was that Bartman one on the NES and I shudder at the thought of whatever Family Guy game is out there.

The thing about the old Simpsons is that there was a certain level of wit that was gobsmacking and often subtle. Remember this brilliant moment? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_DtkbHfTcM (Homer's speech @59s, but the whole thing is good) quote:Never, Marge. Never. I can't live the button-down life like you. I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles. Sure, I might offend a few of the bluenoses with my cocky stride and musky odors - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called "City Fathers" who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about "What's to be done with this Homer Simpson?" It has a literary ring to it. Is it a reference to something? Aging Millenial fucked around with this message at 08:12 on Feb 17, 2017 |

I remember liking the Simpsons platformer. The one where you end up fighting Matt Groening and he summons Bender and Zoidberg to fight for him. It was more a piss-take of gaming in general really.

People who don't like Lisa are immediately suspicious to me, like people with confederate flags on their truck or badass looney tunes on their t-shirts, or anime avatars. I think the last episode that was decent was Apu cheating on Manjulah with the Slurpee lady, and that was pretty anomalous in an otherwise awful season.

I hate that Marge and Homer seem to have fallen out and separated dozens of times. The best Simpsons episodes don't tend to focus purely on the relationship between the characters of the main family, because to make that interesting would require the characters to be far more 3 dimensional than they actually are and that there be some kind of continuity so things actually have some form of stakes. The best episodes are overwhelmingly where they are engaging with the world around them through a novel, stretched and exaggerated, but believable plot device; the flaming moe, the monorail, the stonecutters, and so on.

Not as exacting as I thought (and confirmed by Captain Lavender not to be the case), but I was immediately reminded of this exchange in Psycho: quote:Norman: What do you know about caring? Have you ever seen the inside of one of those places? The laughing, and the tears, and the cruel eyes studying you? My mother there? Oh, but she's harmless! She's as harmless as one of those stuffed birds!

it's amazing how horrible the line readings and audio mix are for the Bart's (completely unnecessary) lines at the beginning of the tik tok video and also all the completely unnecessary and distracting gags walking into frame during the homer live thing. just reeks of a lack of confidence

Another thing regarding the old animation is in addition to breaking the character models for expressions, they would use cinematic angles as well as shots you could only do with animation. Today it's not only sterile with robotic characters, the camera angles are always boring and uninspired.Riptor posted:and also all the completely unnecessary and distracting gags walking into frame during the homer live thing. just reeks of a lack of confidence It was probably because without them the only thing moving would be Homer's mouth.

I liked the random people who were in early season crowd scenes. Not every group of Springfielders had to be Professor Frink, Bumblebee Man, and Sideshow Mel. There were actually unnamed random people around. Also they gave Reverend Lovejoy's denomination of Christianity a name and I loving hate it.

Das Boo posted:When I think of a pointless celebrity cameo episode, I think of that one where Homer literally drops through a celebrity couple's skylight and spends the rest of the episode giving them relationship advice. I tried to refresh my memory on the details, but then I instead found an episode about Mandy Moore stripteasing at a baseball game and then later pole-dancing in front of Bart and moaning while Homer gives her a massage. Homer then crashes a blimp, but is fine. I think the very first pointless celebrity cameo that made me think the show was starting to turn to poo poo was having Paul and Linda McCartney just chilling on the roof of the Kwik-E-Mart for whatever reason in Lisa the Vegetarian. Like, okay, Paul said that he and Apu were old friends from India, but what business did they have being on the roof of the Kwik-E-Mart at *~that exact moment~* Lisa needed enlightenment about vegetarianism other than being a pointless celebrity cameo? It was a dumb cameo in an episode I'm not quite fond of. The episode where Lisa becomes a Buddhist follows a similar structure (both in tone of the episode and a pointless celebrity cameo): Lisa becomes disillusioned with something, finds a new thing, is mocked and ridiculed for said new thing, and RICHARD GERE OUT OF loving NOWHERE at a Buddhist temple to enlighten her about balance between her beliefs and others . Look people I know this is the thread for complaining about the Simpsons but here are a few moments I find hilarious. 1. Skinner's Vietnam War story. This is the sort of joke they used to do all the time except this time it's VERBAL instead of it being a visual gag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqUiVUld33I 2. The first minute of the "clown college" episode. Stupid Homer can be so endearing sometimes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyxvX1N9Tdg&t=74s 3. The Skinner/Chalmers skit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLww3KpLEoo THIS is what we want from The Simpsons.
