I just finished Triangle. Holy poo poo, what a gorgeous, fun episode! I'm willing to cut the future bad episodes a lot of slack if there's anything else like this ahead for me.

Oddly, it felt more to me like "X-Files: The Movie" than the actual movie did. I wonder if it was actually pitched as a film idea at any point? It goes kind-of downhill after that though. I'll never understand how they made an episode where Bruce Campbell plays the Devil be so dull.

Bulky Bartokomous posted:It's crazy how long TV seasons used to be. I just finished season 5, so I have 84 episodes to go. Plus two movies. I never had a problem with Lost's ending, but the last season in general is a slog for a couple reasons. One, the Temple stuff slows what was previously a breakneck pace down to a crawl, and the set looks very much like a set. Two, the 'sideways world' buildup throughout the season was just so they could still have flashes to something - but retroactively almost everything outside of the finale was unnecessary once you realized it wasn't a new Jughead timeline. As for Fringe chat, I remember thinking Fringe was a straight up X-Files clone for the first several episodes or so, but then it quickly evolved into something completely different once you realized how it all tied together. Long term it was one of the most rewarding sci-fi shows in memory, because it paid off or called back to pretty much all of its early plot threads. That, plus it was never afraid to completely change the status quo, or have super weird one-off episodes once per season that broke format completely. The characterization was top notch too; I found myself invested in everyone by the end, including their alternates.

Dogget is honestly one of the better characters in the show overall, he just gets stuck onto some really lovely episodes. I love his approach to the paranormal basically becoming "yeah this is real but its stupid"

# ? Jan 22, 2017 02:21 |

Yeah, Dogget's a fun character. I actually like a fair amount of the Dogget/Scully episodes. They're not classics but they aren't excruciating to watch like the (original) final season. I was hoping he'd show up in the event series, but he's probably too busy with his CBS show.

Doggett doesn't really care if this supernatural hokum is real or not, he just wants to solve him a crime.

Yeah, Doggett's pragmatism and button-down work ethic was a nice gear shift.

You should at least watch Two Fathers/One Son to wrap up the main mythology arc. Any mytharc after that is the show largely spinning its wheels. e: there's a few good ones but most of it is poo poo. For season 7: X-Cops, Theef, En Ami, Brand X, Hollywood A.D., Je Souhaite, Requiem. Requiem was originally written as a series finale and is pretty good. For season 8: Redrum, Medusa, Vienen. Vienen is largely treading water when they bring back the black oil but it's better than most of season 8's attempt at a mytharc. For season 9: John Doe, Audrey Pauley, Improbable, Scary Monsters, Sunshine Days. UnknownMercenary fucked around with this message at 01:05 on Mar 26, 2017 |

I was thinking earlier about whether any of the "sequel" episodes they did through the series were any good. "Orison" was pretty bad compared to the first Donnie Pfaster episode and "Kitsunegari" wasn't a great follow-up to "Pusher". I suppose the second Tooms episode was sort of okay?

Going to continue watching in sequence and will try Hulu next month. The Fathers/Son myth arc episodes were decent. I thought Agua Mala was fantastic and hit the sweet spot of tense and funny. Plus those puncture wounds were super creepy.

I would also suggest the Essence/Existence two parter finale of season 8, if only for the fully satisfying conclusion of the Skinner/Krycek storyline.

One of the best decisions the writers ever made was making Krycek more into Skinner's rival than Mulders. I don't care how they would work it in, if they do more X Files bring back Krycek. Hell he would have been more interesting in the latest episodes than CSM.

Yeah, wondering how the evil government will "cover up" everything done in that last episode. In a post Trump America they're gonna have to ratchet up the kookiness. I feel like there's a potential episode in the election alone. Not to mention the whole Alex Jones/Joel Mchale character being pretty important in the last season. I most certainly hope the show doesn't turn into Falling Skies: X File Edition

New season opens directly on Mulder sitting up from his hospital bed. Scully patiently explains to him that the drugs he took trying to talk to the suicide bomber nearly killed him. She then recommends a regimen of medication to help him deal with the psychological issues he has obviously been going through over the last few months, as he has been raving at a level far above his normal lately. I seriously spent most of the Carter episodes wondering if he was trying to imply that Mulder had just gone completely into lala land, because the whole grand unified conspiracy theory speech from him was like a parody of Mulder. remusclaw fucked around with this message at 01:39 on Apr 21, 2017 |
