Book spoilers:The ring rising out of Venus would be a pretty good cliffhanger if they can keep the story about it going in the background.

I could see them stretching Calibans War for 1.5 seasons ending the 3rd with that and Miller's return. The next 2 episodes I bet will be the Eros chase and Miller convincing Proto Julie to go to Venus wrapping up Leviathan Wakes. Then the rest of the season will be about the humanitarian crisis on Ganymede, ending with escaping the war zone with Prax and cliffhanging on the cargo bay discovery. But this season seems to be moving at a pretty fast pace so wouldn't be surprised if they fit some Abbadons gate into season 3 or delve into some of the novelettes or unwritten stuff like recovering The Nauvoo Medina. I really want episodes dedicated to The Churn and Drive like they did for The Butcher.

I wonder why the show scaled down the population of Eros. It's got 100,000 residents in the show, but 1,500,000 in the book.

Yeah, when I was watching the episode I immediately forgave them for that. Same deal with the Epstein drive exhaust plumes, which according to the books are so bright and long that they completely dwarf the vessel creating it. That wouldn't be as neat looking on screen as spaceships zooming around with a more understated flare from the engine.

At least the plumes of the Nauvoo burned a big part of the construction scaffold, and at least one of those pusher drones turned into collateral by getting too close. That was a nice touch.

It wouldn't be so bad if the shot didn't start on one side of the Nauvoo and go to the other side. Like the protomolecule wanted to be a super bad rear end and jump in front of the train just before it passed.

I think the Nauvoo was just aimed at the center of the asteroid and Miller was near the end. It could have dodged the other way, but then you wouldn't get the cool shot of it passing overhead.

Yes, very much in keeping with the books. This is the point where those in the loop about the Protomolecule take a collective gasp and come to terms with the fact that whatever the protomolecule is, it is so far beyond the understanding of humans that it can disregard Newtonian physics. It was extremely well presented in the episode, and hope they have more grave reactions in the start of the next episode.

You can see from the orbital display that Eros underwent a massive, sudden course change.

I don’t think it’s spoilers to say that it violates our understanding of physics.

It’s spoilers to say it’s now on a collision course with Earth, but I guarantee that will come up in the first moments of the next episode.

This is what fascinates me most in existence: the peculiar necessity of imagining what is, in fact, real.

In one of the little "behind the scenes" videos one of the producers said that they knew it wasn't accurate to have the Nauvoo in shot that long, but that wanted to shoot it more dramatically so they could have Miller react to it.

One hundred million tonnes of steel moving at twenty thousand kilometres per second.

That’s so much kinetic energy.

It’s forty time the energy of the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. It would take one hundred thousand tonnes of antimatter to match it, or the petroleum reserves of several thousand Earths.

But it would still change Eros’ velocity by less than 1 km⁄s. Eros is heavy. And it’s orbiting the Sun at 24.36 km⁄s, which is the number you need to match to drop it into the Sun.

The Nauvoo is shown accelerating at at least 65 g, by the way, if we go by the time to impact display. Going by the rate the speed figure rises on‐screen, it’s over 4000 g.

It's going to be a lot lighter after you mine it for resources and hollow it out and turn it into a space station. But on the other hand, if that 20kps is relative to Eros there's no way that impact doesn't shatter the hell out of Eros which is something they pointed out they didn't want to do. What you'd need to do to get in to fall into the sun is slow the Nauvoo down, just butt up against Eros, and then fire the engines again to get a sustained impulse rather than just one massive hammerblow. Oh well, still awesome.

I don't think they were looking to push it on a straight line vector either, they're only looking to change it's vector to intercept the sun, not necessarily the speed. A hit from the Navou at a near 90 degree angle would transfer almost all of its angular momentum to Eros. I'm trusting that they did the math to figure out the velocity needed on the intercept to alter Eros's orbital trajectory.

Launching stuff into the sun is really hard, you basically have to reduce the orbital velocity of Eros to zero.
