basically the ACA or an ACA-like was the only sort of fix that would work without telling the insurance industry to go gently caress itself and no one in government will do that. so both parties, as institutions, wanted it or something broadly similar. the anger and disagreement was over the specifications: who would bear the costs, who would benefit most, and did it pay lip-service to their brand/ideology the middle class largely hated it for good cause, because they were getting shafted by it. democrats wouldn't gently caress the rich or the insurance industry so the middle class got to pay. the Republican alternative is essentially to lower the cost by reducing the benefits to the poor and so gently caress the middle class slightly less
