Of course, this is the same guy who said that lesbians don't exist and in the video used him having sex with a grown man at the age of 14 as an example of one of those so-called "coming of age relationships", so that's definitely not what he was going for.

Lightning Lord posted:So is Corbyn good or bad or somewhere in the middle It's genuinely somewhere in the middle. Like all British politicians, he's an incompetent milksop of a man who can't do anything, allowing the Tory establishment to bulldoze their way towards a scary and non-functioning future. However he's also not the Tory establishment, so he hasn't been enacting fiscal eugenics to force hundreds of poor people into suicide, or selling off public services for personal profit. It'd be nice if he took a stand and actually committed to standing up for the half-the-country who voted against Brexit, plus the tens of thousands who've since gone "wait you mean the bus lied to us?" But he's been voting for the government's disastrous plan to flip off the French one last time before we destroy ourselves, so... yeah. British politics is incredibly hosed right now and everyone is just sort of muddling along trying to ignore the gigantic thunderclouds of doom on the horizon.

Ok but my understanding is that the British left are not really opposing Brexit because they see it as an answer to EU austerity and financial domination and hope they can steer it in a good direction? If so this seems misguided at best.

Lightning Lord posted:I've heard he has trouble getting the Blairites to do anything and that he's a secret Brexiteer? No secret about it. He has never been a particularly big fan of the EU, what with it being a force for neoliberalism and him being an old fashioned socialist. During the referendum campaigned he lukewarmly campaigned for Remain because the party MPs & membership overwhelmingly supports staying in the EU, but after it became an inevitability he's been more keen in to get on with it rather than have it be drawn out. Which has been contentious with a lot of his own supporters in the party who are a mite annoyed that he didn't whip on a vote to bomb Syria but did whip the vote on giving the Tories a blank piece of paper for Article 50 negotiations. Lightning Lord posted:Ok but my understanding is that the British left are not really opposing Brexit because they see it as an answer to EU austerity and financial domination and hope they can steer it in a good direction? If so this seems misguided at best. Some of the left think that, though it's less the austerity & financial domination & more the EU laws on state ownership & so on. Of course no other EU country follows them so I don't see why we do, it's dumb. But most of the left think the EU is pretty bad but giving the Tories free reign to strip away the Working Time Directive, mandatory holiday & a whole host of other worker rights, as well as the right to live & work in other EU countries means we're probably better in than out for now. Some even think the EU can be reformed but not a hope that happens without some sort of disaster. forkboy84 fucked around with this message at 23:26 on Feb 20, 2017 |

So they're basically giving in because EU = neoliberalism? Doesn't he care that the Tories will detonate the economy the way they're going? I mean the tax haven talk poo poo alone... Also what's the chance the Tories renege on their promise to not deport EU citizens after the full pullout?

Corbyn is a man who would be very good at campagining for local issues like getting the graffti cleaned off the park fence but is deeply incompetant as Labour leader, and seems to habour bizzare fantasies about being a counter culture populist figure. He seems to struggle to hold May to account, even though May is a medicore PM who is only there to keep the wheel spinning as we try and figure out what on Earth Brexit actually is. He seems like a nice chap but isn't a good leader, and his apathy during the referendum followed by his recent declaration that he supports Leave now have alienated a lot of his support. At a time where we need a strong opposition, he seems more interested in other things.
