Recently on a construction site in town people were framing away on a bit of a windy day. It was windy but not mega windy. A guy was carrying a sheet of plywood and came around a corner where a much stronger than normal gust of wind that was funneled perfectly through the construction site to create an almost up-draft and sent up sailing up into the air and off the building, killing him. Everything was up to code and everyone was doing what they should be doing, just a really weird accident.

Those high mountain airstrips are even more dangerous than the cliff-drops alone would indicate. At high altitude, the air is thinner; at 15,000 feet (the peaks of the alps) it's literally half the density of the air at sea level. That gives you about half the lift and drastically reduces your engine power if you haven't got a forced-induction system. It takes longer to get into the air, and when you're up, a hard maneuver will more easily lead to a stall.

Speaking of interesting runways, I did some work at the Nixon Fork Mine in Alaska, which had an interesting set-up. The runway is just under 1300m long, but it has a big hill at the end that you'll smack right into if you don't stop in time. That, combined with high cross winds and large planes have resulted in two Carviars, a DC-3,-4, and -6, and a CASA all having crashed up there.

I'm usually pretty good at identifying cities from video clips but that ridiculously low approach is stumping me. I'm pretty sure it's not the US from the road markings. The only brand I can see on a store is "pintos". A lot the apartment towers seem to have external hallways which means it's probably a warmer climate. Something's giving me a mexico or south america or even Philippians vibe but I have no idea why. But I'm getting all OCD and need to know.
