I used to live not to far from there and people were calling bullshit from the beginning. An acquaintance is a reporter down there and received a ton of hate mail when he published an article saying it wasn't Mexicans.

snergle posted:As for leaving do you think people might start to be culturally mormon? I currently live in a heavy catholic area and I noticed a lot of people fall into the culturally jewish thing where you don't observe the rules or care about the religion you just use temple as a social club. I would say a good 60% of the younger caltholics I know in this area just use church as a social club and dont give a gently caress about the teachings. If someone could convince them not to pay tithe it would go a long way. So, the paid leaders have a lot of intensive to keep driving the church story. Believing members have no means to properly critically think and understand how facts and truth are really found. They hang on every word of the leaders believing they're literal prophets and apostles. Any info they hear against their beliefs is turned around to reinforce them and their commitment to the church. The confirmation bias is too strong. They think they're in an elite group that's saving the world and the only way to be happy (even though Utah has one of the highest rates for anti-depressant use). You're either in or out and if you're out you're then a project to be "fellowshipped" relentlessly until you're back in. You can't walk a casual line in the church and be in good standing or not be shunned. However, growth has slowed tons. People born in the church or with long family ties tend to stay very entrenched. More and more are leaving in Europe, Japan, and North America. Growth is mainly in poorer countries now or from believing families having lots of children. The biggest change is the difficulty for information control that the church has relied on for it's entire history. Like the examples in my previous post, they can't keep the real history under lock and key anymore. Plus, with the growing data collection on history and books in general, they never anticipated the power of information extraction and comparison in the internet age. It gets obvious really quickly what sources were copied and remixed for Joseph Smith to write the Book of Mormon. They've put some apologetic essays on their official website but it's only helping people question it all since the cognitive dissonance becomes huge. There seems to be a growing number of mormons who are more progressive and disturbed with the sexism, racism and bigotry in the church and leaders. Hopefully they'll keep pushing back. The church is quick to excommunicate anyone who speaks out or asks questions, though, even if the doubters only use church sponsored information. One huge voice right now is Tyler Glen from the band Neon Trees. He came out as gay and a non-believer recently and has been using his music to express the hurt. The church won't touch him since it's a PR nightmare for them. Tyler used some temple rituals and poked at Joseph Smith in some of his latest music videos. It's been awesome to see! Others have been excommunicated or pressured to resign for simple facebook posts. Sorry for the novel, but I haven't talked about this much and my family has no clue I've all but resigned for about 6 years now. Guess the Schadenfreude is in seeing information control slip out of the hands of a church lead by elderly men stuck in the 1950s that can't keep up with the times yet says it's the one and only true religion lead by a living prophet. I can be laughed at, too, for buying in to it all for so long, spending two years trying to convert the Vietnamese, and giving away more than my student loan debt to help "save" dead people! I still have that temple outfit... Some great sources that helped me are mormonthink.com, CESletter.com, and reddit's r/exmormon (even though it's reddit). There are a lot of parallels to scientology, too, and the recent documentaries like Going Clear and Leah Remini's A&E series have been amazing to see. Something like that with mormonism will hopefully come about soon. I wish HBO would do a unflinching series on Joseph Smith and all the crazy stuff he did!

He's alive, by the way, had to look it up. Poor dude. Severe fractures to skull and chest, but the medics from the ambulance got him to sit up and respond on site. A tire is what, 30-40 pounds? Looks like it's going 25 mph at least. He could have been dead before his head smashed into the sidewalk.

I don't want to poo poo up this thread anymore with our bullshit, but it really is a great game, and you can get as far down the rabbithole as you want, or keep doing very simple infantry only stuff. The Schadenfreude is that they've never managed to make a decent computer game version of it, closest approximation is maybe the Steel Panthers series
