Gene Hackman Fan posted:i've accepted the possibility that nobody reads my posts here anyway as it is, but... have you seen the bloodrage i've posted for the past six or seven hours in dealing with the state party of tennessee? for close to eleven months i have been going from phone call to phone call, emails, facebook messages, saying i want to help but i also want to make sure i know what i'm doing -- asking, begging, pleading to be let known of any information sessions or conference calls or anything that would help me get a handle on procedural details within the party. coming to the stark realization that the party at the state level is even more clueless and disorganized than i am is like being dumped out of a warm bed in the middle of the night and falling into the ocean during winter in antarctica: it's extremely unpleasant, shocking to the point of immobilization, and forces one to make more painful choices than a more generous god would have allowed. you'll have to bear with me when i express a little incredulity at the idea of an establishment party claiming things are fine when i get a reply to an email so long ago that i literally forgotten i had sent it.

Ace of Baes posted:I think the third party overtaking the Dem party will only happen in the contingency that establishment Dems refuse to become progressive and also make it difficult-impossible to primary them, which I don't think is likely because I don't think the majority of bad Dems know that they're bad people. i'm not convinced this would happen because I'm not convinced there are enough people in enough places to make it feasible I can see it threatening the dems to a point but that will also willingly let republicans win more bigly. Basically a serious third party will simply siphon the votes from the major party most closely ideologically aligned with them, causing their mutual enemy to win. The threat of constantly losing without essentially grabbing all those votes with a ideological move can pressure a party but it also essentially gives up the government to the other guy while this political game of chicken takes place

That's not even taking into account the literal hundreds of offices across the country where Republicans just run unopposed because that's how lovely the Dem party is.

If Republicans win more because people defect from the Dem party to third parties it's the Democratic parties fault, and they probably will go the way of the whigs.

if ellison or buttigieg don't win dnc chair it's not like the fight is over, it just means we need to keep going to local offices and town halls and pushing progressive politics by supporting and voting in people from the ground up hell, some people even choose to take their place among the thousands of little offices because there's no other choice and they can't find a job otherwise

The fact that democratic parties that have been entrenched for years are getting hijacked so easily by bernie bros with no political experience prior to the 2016 primary shows both how incompetent centrists are, and also that they're a minority that has previously benefited by peoples apathy/lack of faith in the system.

cant w8 for the yaaaas queen to sweep the nation with policy proposals like making sure transgender people can go into the shower associated with their identity before being gassed, removing the immigrant skulls from the spikes on border patrol dune buggies, and pushing hard for a tax-deductible for working moms going to school and making less than <$23,000.

logikv9 posted:i'm not convinced this would happen because I'm not convinced there are enough people in enough places to make it feasible State parties then start to align heavily to one or the other of these organic groupings, and said parties continue to enjoy success at the state level, but lose heavily in most so-called purple states. All the while, each side despairs of ever convincing the other side to fall into line, and after some kind of leadership struggle, the losing side of said struggle departs and forms their own party. The key for this is that each side needs to despair of winning congressional majorities while still retaining a fired-up enough base at home to keep getting them elected and fend off the other side from grabbing control of the local party machinery. I don't think it's likely to happen now, because much of the support that I see for Hillary-type Democrats (I'll avoid the neoliberal pejorative) is very much from existing leadership and among the old guard, and I don't see a grassroots base coalescing around them there to counter the enthusiasm of the Sanders-Warren wing, which seems to have legitimate grassroots support. If anything, it feels like a changing of the guard is taking place, which is something else entirely.

A third party that would succeed would only start if Bernie abandons the dems. He should, but it's unlikely unless the dems ratfuck themselves.

The hard part about abandoning the Dems is that it's difficult to break through the conventional ideas of what are acceptable conventional parties, particularly with the press and their very limited imaginations of who to talk about or bring on as guests. Essentially the only good about the party is that it has name recognition, and trying to build that with an outside party is an uphill battle.
