Are the SD2SNES menu graphics hardcoded into the firmware or can I drop a skin file onto the SD and make it not look like rear end? Granted I'm only ever on the menu for like ten seconds max but it still drives me bananas.

Otherwise the SD2SNES is loving amazing. Friends came over and we played Pac Man 2 New Adventures for like three hours. Never before have I had so much fun playing an awful game.

It /really/ makes me want for a proper SCART to HDMI adapter now though. SVideo is "okay" enough that I forgot about it after enough drinks but it was certainly not something I want to put up with if I don't have to.

It's also $1.30 when you buy 10 or more, much better than the $5+ the radio shack one was (their parts prices have become ludicrous lately)

I really appreciate that you said DKL and not also DKL2 - that game may be a bastardized version of DKC2 but it was my lifeblood on long car rides as a kid.

Is this a pretty good deal for ~60 Megadrive games in a PC emulator? I'm not positive but I think this is that whole Steam deal that allows mods and stuff. Would these files work as-is in a flashcart too?

All this Euro Platformer chat feels relevant since I just played through Superfrog HD on PSN. I hate to say it but this really exposed the flaws of the game I played as a child in 1993. Sprawling levels with no real direction, power-ups smeared all over the screen for the purpose of "points" and nothing much else, frustrating inconsistency in enemy design (can I kill this guy by jumping on him or will I lose a hit point? Who knows!). Still a good time though. :)

A lot of public libraries now have them for use as do universities and whatnot. Worse comes to worse you can even use Shapeways although that would probably be more expensive. But the cost of that project box is hard to beat.

No reason to buy that, the original creators won't see a dime of the money. You're just paying the rights holder of software that should be public domain.

By original creators I meant the people whose labor went into creating the games. I don't really care what set of rich guys is selling a lazy digital download of an ancient game with zero extras. If they want to make a nice physical release or do something like 3D classics where you get more than you did originally & shows some actual care and effort put in sure, glad to give you money. Selling me ROMs with a lovely emulator, naah

I picked up a PS2 HDD adapter at Goodwill last week and finally got around to making an HD Loader setup. I had a 500gb drive sitting around which worked perfectly (holds about 150 games). I did buy a Free Mcboot card for $8 on ebay though - There's a bunch of sellers that sell loaded cards for <$10, so it's pretty convenient. Also they won't scam you after months of faking delays

Everything works pretty well. I had some trouble with winhiip that required me to reformat a few times, but I got it. Also, OPL won't load the game list for some reason, but HDL works okay. Load times are incredible.

One thing I wasn't prepared for was the limited game compatibility. I've already run into a few that won't load, but I suppose burning those to disc is always an option.

I did buy the Sega Steam bundle, but it was for the game hub (not really worth it) and workshop access (worth it). A lot of ROM hacks for these games are gathered into one place, and some of them are loving great ones I couldn't easily find anywhere else.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLmVAjnvAY4

I also wanted the ability to use these games in my living room via Steam Link without having to lug my Genesis or PC down there.

Yeah, the workshop support is enough of a value-add it's worth it to commit the cardinal sin of Paying For ROMs. Maybe not full price but they do those cheap bundles pretty often.

I was reading up more on the Pseudo Saturn boot method and noticed there is a newer version called Pseudo Saturn Kai that suppose to have new features like letting you still use the save function of the Action Replay. Does that still let you use the ram as the site kept saying something about those games not working, but that might apply to their own custom cartiages that have a SD card support.

There's a few incompatible games but I think I have had three in my collection of several hundred PS2 games that won't work with the hard drive. Probably the biggest for me was Michigan: Report From Hell which was a huge disappointment for me after I went through some effort to import a copy.

But yeah, when you run into this it's not super difficult to burn a copy that will run.

You'd be surprised at how minimal the lag is. I think I had 30ms over wifi. Besides, if it's bothersome for the type of game, I can always go up to my room and play locally on a real system. It's no big deal.

Fyi, it does NOT restore the save function of the Action Replay. I'm not sure if the RAM works. It might because it's not flash. I've never tried it.

That a bummer. I kept seeing it mention saves, so I figured the Kai version improved on the original and got saving added back. Maybe I might just go with the mod chip in that case.

I think it has a save manager for the console's built-in RAM if you don't want to leave the bootloader. It's more useful when you have a Gamer's Cartridge.

It may get more functionality as cafe alpha works on it, however.

I'm going to just get a $50 crappy SCART to HDMI adapter until I can decide what to do wrt OSSC or XRGB. With the one adapter that everyone seems to rebrand -- does it integrate audio into the output HDMI or do I need to run any additional cabling? I'd really prefer not to run any additional cabling as I have my TV output to my SONOS directly via optical so having to run audio would be a real pain in the rear end.

e: Some more googling reveals yes.

I bought an assorted pile of 60 broken controllers. Hey, you never know when you'll find something interesting!

Seriously though, last year I bought a lot of 40 Genesis controllers that had a JVC X'eye 3-button and a Pioneer Laseractive 6-button in it. Was able to make my money back just selling the Laseractive. Tonight I found a Master System controller with the cord running out of the (right) side, which I've heard exist but hadn't seen until tonight. Who in the hell thought that was a good idea? I've got a generic NES controller that has the cord coming out of the left which is even worse. That does have one use though: I pop it into the 2nd-player port on my NES when I want to play Smash TV with the two controllers option. The cord isn't in the way because you end up pointing the d-pad towards the TV, and its not an issue to hold an ordinary controller in your left hand because the cord just fits between your fingers.

I should probably just buy Smash TV for the SNES.

The cord coming out of the side was a Japanese thing. All the early Japanese Sega and Nintendo systems did it. lovely part is the rubbers in the Sega controllers break down though.

Ufouria is probably the best NES title that was released in Europe but not the US. It's a cute Metroidvania sidescrolling adventure that's held up really well, aside from one really frustrating section.

I'm not the biggest shmup enthusiast, but Over Horizon has to be one of the very best on the system.

Rod Land is a pretty good game that's similar to Bubble Bobble.

Have you tried the hyperkin one with your MSX? I have a Hudson pad, but it's kind of gummy and OG MSX pads tend to be more than I'm wanting to spend.
