Also Vonnegut makes lots of references to streets and directions in Indianapolis that I get automatically but others would struggle with which is nice because every other book is talkign about some trash covered shithole in New York or LA or whatever

I've always been of the opinion that any encounter with aliens in a hostile context would be a total slaughter for one side or the other. Even if they were just 50 years behind us or ahead of us in terms of technology, it'd be enough to kill them all without a casualty or the reverse, like that one loving anime Baloogan was on about with the ship that went back to WW2 to more effectively genocide the Chinese or whatever Which is why The Forever War is such a great book, among other reasons (i love fiction that deals with time dilation issues)
