Regalingualius posted:All this talk of FFXI bullshit is kinda reminding me of WoW's Ahn'Qiraj raid when it launched. It started with Kurinaxx, a giant earwig, who slowly reduced the effectiveness of healing on your tank, necessitating a second tank to take over every so often, which is done by the first tank stopping all attacks so that the second tank will be considered a higher threat due to attacking more. He also throws sand at people which reduces their hit chance by 75%. So if that hits the second tank too often, they might not get the boss to switch targets at all. RNG! Next there was General Rajaxx, a wave based encounter that would generally drag on for far longer than your healers mana so what you'd do was kill off all but one soldier of each wave, have all your healers equip a level 5 or so wand and have a paladin apply a debuff that would give whoever hit that target mana back and regenerate mana that way. Didn't have a paladin, like say, one of the game's two factions? Well get hosed then. Directly after that you get Buru the Gorger, a boss who gives a stacking damage over time effect that, due to an exponential damage curve, will kill anybody after X applications. Which, unless you're a super high end guild, would happen before you could kill the boss. Luckily your entire raid could all chug down nature damage absorption potions which, due to the way the effect worked(it did a little bit of damage on it's own and if that damage was resisted, the effect fizzled), would delay it's onset for long enough to kill the boss, effectively forming a tax on attempts against that boss. Take the opposite path from Rajaxx and you end up at Moam, a boss with a mana bar fills up over time and kills everybody in the raid when it gets full. Running a raid composition that is light on mana drain? Hope you like getting exploded. Both paths converge again at the end to fight Ossirian the Unscarred, a boss that would flip out and kill your entire raid but it could be subdued by bring it near crystals that would spawn throughout the room. There was of course, no protection against you randomly getting two crystals spawning so far apart that it was impossible to get there in time before the boss started killing people in one hit.

The worst part of Smoke is there are so many crazy things real life ants do that would make awesome pokemon ideas. There are ants that spray caustic cemicals from their abdomen, or become literal suicide bombers by combining unstable chemicals in their body. You have ants that farm fungus or who turn there body into a living larder for the rest of the hive, filling there abdomen like a balloon until they can't even walk anymore. You have ants that form rafts or bridges with their body's and act like the whole hive was one organism. Considering there's only one cannon ant pokemon, it's a rich untapped design space, especially for a game set in Brazil. So far Uranium has manage to take advantage of exactly none of that.

Even before Gen IV, you had Scizor and Heracross as headliners (and Scyther and Pinsir before that, to an extent), and a lot of the fully-evolved bug-types were pretty good with a few TMs to shore up their movepools. Granted, they had to lean on their other types a little more back before X-Scissor and Bug Buzz existed (though Heracross had Megahorn), but they were good Pokemon in other respects. Unless you guys mean bugs are treated as a joke in-story, which is sometimes true (the consistently weakest trainer type is the Bug Catcher), but there have been several Bug-type gyms, at least.

I love Bug Types. They've been great ever since my over-leveled Beedrill's pin missile carried my crap team against Sabrina back in Gen I, so my gimmick playthrougs usually involve doing monotype bug runs. They were pretty difficult for a long time because I was always relying on Scyther/Scizor, Forretress, and Heracross to carry things along. Gen IV helped a little when it added Vespiqueen and Yanmega to the roster for two actually tolerable bug/flying types (even if I catching a female combee is a chore), but it was really Gen V changed my all-bug gimmick from "possible I guess" to "really damned good" by adding Galvantula and the monsters that are Scolipede and Volcarona. It also helps that Joltik was the cutest `mon of its generation. Then Gen VI added Megas, and Mega Beedrill got really good (but still fragile) and the first of the butterfly/moths that I don't absolutely hate: Vivillon, which has a great (but dumb) gimmick move that makes fire types explode. I was disappointed that Vivillon was the only new bug we got in Kalos but Gen VII made up for it by adding not one but two really good bug/water types in Araquanaut and Golisopod (I prefer Araquanaut because it's got a better ability) and the adorable and amazing dragon-slaying Bug/Fairy Ribombee. Gen VII also boosted the power of Leech Life to 80 (from 20), giving Bugs an amazing life-draining stab move. Also, Lurantis is the first Grass type I actually chose to use voluntarily, but that's neither here nor there. It looks like a bug, it counts.

Diantha's team in XY had a theme that matched her character: movie star. They're all various characters in movies. Hawlucha is the plucky young hero of action series, a Luchadora. Gardevoir is the lead in romance and romantic comedies, complete with wedding dress. Gourgeist is the ghost in a horror movie. Goodra is the friendly lead from a children's movie series. Tyrantum and Aurorus are the most classic "movie" dinosaurs, a T. Rex and Sauropod. Also in bugchat, Joltik and Galvantula are the best bugs. Joltik is adorable, Galvantula is cool, and actually usable in online battles with Sticky Web and 90% accuracy Thunder. But really, just look at this lil' guy: 's the best. Smore is... "okay" for a fan design, but if it were official, it would compare very, very poorly to some of the official Bug Pokemon. Especially with competition from things like Durant, the angriest ant. The name especially is still pretty headscratching.

Whoop-de-doo. What makes some Pokedex entries great is that they phrase outlandish stuff in a mundane way- Gyarados leveling entire cities when it gets mad, Drifloon dragging kids that grab on it straight to hell, and Banette constantly longing for revenge on the child that abandoned it is just a way of life in the world of Pokemon. This is a boring entry about a boring thing.

Cynthia honestly has the most "Generic Champion Team" out of all Champions, but hers also does a good job of showing off some of the best Pokemon in Sinnoh. Diantha's team is "balanced" but nowhere near the best team you could put together using what's available with Kalos' 450+ Pokemon (even Kalos-exclusive it misses out on heavy-hitters like Talonflame or Diggersby). It's why with things like the two fossils being in her team, along with the constant references to her being a movie star, speak "theme" to me. Meanwhile Professor Kuki basically has the "rival" team to the protagonist in Sun/Moon.

I could see a use for a generic ant-type that would also justify putting the watering can into post-game content. Give the player an ant-farm mini-game, and let him collect/breed a variety of generic ants, and give each type of ant a chance to find certain kinds of berries per hour (or whatever timeframe you want to use) of game time. It's not a good idea, mind you, but certainly preferable to whatever poo poo this game probably has planned.
