Yeah, one has to assume that he wouldn't voluntarily give up Beatrice. Plus, it's dramatically appropriate that all four options get covered, and the bunnies picked the first three. So, to take this scene in a real-world context, all we have to do is take the demons out of it and imagine them being offered this choice by one of the servants with a gun. You could just send Kanon to talk to George and Shannon to Jessica, for instance.

Yeah, it does seem that Maria would be quick about making a choice. I'm hesitant to say Battler will do better than George or Jessica, he's incompetent and gets stuck a lot.

I don't think either of them is likely to pick "kill the person I love" or "kill literally everybody else". Even if I imagine one of them as a murder culprit (as I've considered George a couple of times now), they each have other family members they don't want dead. They could commit suicide, but they already know that the other kids will be brought in and given a test (possibly the same one), so it may amount to the same thing as killing everyone anyway. Let's see. I'll guess that Jessica will try to punch Ronove and George will try to talk his way around Gaap. I don't expect either of those things to work.

Maria and Battler have to have a different test, here. This only works for the older siblings... and only because of who's around. You could offer Battler the same choice with child Ange as the crux, but she's not around for him to take that threat credibly. ...I feel like they're both going to choose themselves, but only after a period long enough for Kinzo to declare the test failed due to hesitation.

I have no clue who Battler and Maria's second choice might be, so I'll just guess what choices would be taken. Battler would pick number one cause he seems like the heroically stupid type given the opportunity. Jessica would pick number two since she thinks Kanon would understand her choice and accept it. George would pick number three since he's madly in love with Shanon and Beatrice has been foreshadowing him having a dark side to him and that seems like a good opportunity to show it. Maria would pick number three because she has no one left and witches are real, so get hosed.

I don't think I ever mentioned why I seized on the idea of the answer-in-a-bottle thing early on, when it was a relatively unimportant detail. So maybe I'll tell a story about one of the most famous murder mysteries of all time, And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. It's well-known for the complexity of the mystery, which is quite satisfactory, and the extremely unfortunate original title, which I absolutely refuse to reproduce here. The central conceit of the mystery is that ten people are gathered on an island owned by a mysterious and reclusive person (or persons), installed in a mansion, and then isolated by a terrible storm. They are presented with a children's rhyme, and then they begin to be killed off, one by one, in a manner that at least superficially matches what's said in the rhyme. As the paranoia generally increases, they begin to wonder if someone else is on the island or if one of the people involved is actually a murderer. And, of course, as one might say, when the gulls cry the next day... In any event, the solution to the mystery is fished up in a bottle. The murderer wanted to create a perfect locked-room mystery, but also had to reveal how they did it, and used the mechanism of the message-in-a-bottle as a way of confessing without actually confessing, and leaving it to fate to decide whether the solution to the mystery would become known. (The solution, incidentally, depends on one of the people appearing to be dead when they actually aren't.) Sometimes it can be quite tempting to say something and not say it at the same time.

I haven't read any spoilers, nor have I figured out the total mystery yet, but I think I got this chapter done pat but I don't know yet what it would mean if my suspicions were correct for the other chapters. I'll just stick with shitposting here, and eagerly await how the rest of the chapter plays out to see if I'm correct and see if other people have the same hunch I do. I'm so glad that my bias against George has been even slightly justified. Even if he doesn't do anything, even if he later says that he was lying, that he claimed to be willing to kill everyone to get what he wants is enough to confirm my belief that he totally is.

Completely Generic Goatman is the name of my new alt-country band. I think I'm nearly there on a time difference theory where everyone in the guesthouse was killed when the dungeon people were asleep, I'll try and make the last details fit and post it tomorrow. It comes down to whether or not I can work out a way for one half of the phone calls to be a recording, it may fall at the last hurdle.
