Xiu Xiu's new album FORGET is streaming on Noisey.

It's my album of the year so far. Explosive noisey sound. I'm not a big Xiu Xiu fan, I've only heard Air Force and that's it but this album is hitting me hard.

I loved Spoon when I was in high school but that's really awful. Such an unbelievably boring song.

Probably the worst thing they've ever done. Sounds like a total lack of inspiration.

Saw Los Campesinos! today, after about 7 years of wanting to see them live. It lived up to the hype.

Also bought their new album on vinyl, which is out Friday. Also amazing. I just love Los Campesinos!

Very. A bit more depressing and there isn't as much variety of musical styles compared to ILYHB or FF, but the lyrics are amazing as usual.

Wait when did his lyrics get good? His first album was atrocious lyrically; decent musically.

The new Grandaddy album is streaming on NPR music - I don't know whether or not it's good yet, but it's Grandaddy, so it's worth a listen. (But if you haven't listened to their 1997 debut Under the Western Freeway, stop whatever you're doing and listen to that first)

Not really? Most songs vacillate between the slow emotional style like Two Wildly Different Perspectives and Ballad of the Dying Man, with that song being what I'd say is the closest to what you're wanting.

I decided to wait until I can listen on something besides NPR. I don't know if the player was always like this or if it's some issue with the files they're streaming, but the grandaddy album sounds like total muted poo poo and has constant annoying garbles and pops.

I don't know... it's kind of monotonous and rambling. I'ts not bad but it feels like someone took all of Grandaddy's songs and distlled them down to a single-tone stream of themselves.

Yeah, I got kind of the same feeling. Like, it's a new Grandaddy album, and that's not a bad thing. But the only thing the album has going for it is that there aren't a lot of bands anymore who sound like Grandaddy. And if I wanted to listen to a Grandaddy album, then I'll just go listen to any of the albums they put out 13+ years ago.

Meanwhile, this new King Gizzard album is really great.

I need someone to listen to the new Sun Kil Moon album so I can talk about it, I absolutely love it. It's two hours long, which I know is a turn-off for a lot of people, but all the songs are really interesting, since pretty much every song is only the length it is so that Mark can sing about whatever it is he wants to tell you about. There's two songs that total out to about twenty minutes combined about him being obsessed with true crime and unsolved mysteries, culminating to him going to the Cecil Hotel where Elisa Lam died and him exploring around, trying to find where the elevator footage was taken and looking for access points to the rooftop, talking to people who worked there and discussing things with them, and then finally getting picked up by his girlfriend who tells him "cool, I'm glad you finally got that out of your system."

Can I bring up WHY? for a minute?

Alopecia (which I came to late; maybe 2010) is one of those albums that I connect to a place in time, mood, blah blah blah. Never really got into Eskimo Snow that much. I acknowledge that they straddled a line of good-weird and ... I dunno, just kinda bad.

Mumps, etc. was largely panned, which I agree with because it was largely unpleasant ("Kevin's Cancer," christ). And now they've got a new LP coming out next month with singles that also leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Any current/former WHY? fans out there that feel the same way? Did they get worse, or did we just get older?

(In before "they were always terrible" posts)

I've liked most of everything they've done, but nothing will live up to Alopecia. That being said, I listened to the new album while running tonight, and got an Alopecia vibe from a good 3 or 4 tracks. Couldn't tell you which until I actually pay attention to the song titles, though.

Same :smith: They're one of my favorite bands and I've seen them live probably the most of any band (I think 7 times?), and I liked Invisible (the single), but the rest of the album just didn't do anything for me at all. They seem to be going in a much poppier direction and abandoning what made me love them in the first place (the math-rock stuff like the finger tapping and weird time signatures and cool looping techniques). That was somewhat true on their last couple albums too, but here it's pretty much completely gone. None of the guitar work stood out to me at all, which sucks because I know they're capable of doing really interesting stuff.

God drat, I feel the same way, listening to this right now and I really enjoy Last Kiss and Invisible but everything is just boring as hell. poo poo, the unused/throwaway/unreleased/whatever tracks on Lost Loves were better than this.

What a loving disappointment. :(

Electric Rainbow (a b-side from Planet Of Ice that's on Lost Loves) was better than a few of the songs on Planet Of Ice, better than many of the songs on Lost Loves and better than this entire album.

Not sure if you're referring to the s/t LP or the Sun Giant EP, but comparing a single track to an entire album seems kinda silly

You couldn't grok my race car, but you dug the roadside blur.
So the new Magnetic Fields album, 50 Song Memoir, drops on Friday and NPR has pretty much the whole album up.

http://www.npr.org/2017/03/06/518379457/first-listen-the-magnetic-fields-50-song-memoir

Fellow fans will understand from 69 Love Songs that he's serious when he says 50 Song Memoir.

I've been listening to it today. I appreciate what he's trying to do and I can't fault his ambition, but sad to say I'm bouncing off the majority of these songs. They sound like they belong in a musical, which is probably is partly what he's going for. Love at the bottom of the sea was the same way. It's not really a style I enjoy.

By dint of there being 50 songs, there is at least a full album's worth of stuff I do actually enjoy. Standouts for me are Judy Garland, Foxx and I, How to play the synthesizer, Ethan Frome, and Weird Diseases. The fourth disk comes up on NPR tomorrow and I'm sure there'll be a least few of those that'll hit the spot. Conversely, "'91 The Day I finally" is pretty strange and I feel like it hardly qualifies as even a song. Like, this is the year you released my favorite album of yours and your first as this group, and maybe say something about that? I wonder how he's going to do it at the live show, as I imagine I'm not alone in feeling this way.

Edit: I was listening to the last disk and Cold Blooded Man is easily the standout for me. It has that classic 90s era Magnetic Fields sound I love, due in no small part to the cello. They didn't put up the last 10 tracks, but hopefully there's another one of those in there.
