As someone who lives near the Humber Estuary, I can certainly say its a body of water you don't want to make skin contact with, I accidentally did once and my skin was horribly itchy until I was able to shower.

To clarify the water on the boat thing, all the holes that are used to let the water back into the ocean are above the water line when the ship is fully upright, correct?

Well how about when an alcohol-fueled car catches fire and sets the entire pit crew alight with invisible flames? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku7TdLeEGsQ p sure this is one of the major reasons that most racing series ban the use of straight methanol/ethanol as a racing fuel. Thomamelas posted:Which is a nightmare if there is fire. It doesn't take fire a long time to get out of hand and while Nomex is great, it doesn't buy you forever. Getting a five or six point racing harness undone is designed to be pretty easy. It's a big button in the center for this very reason. But when you're groggy or concussed, and panicking because "Fire, oh god fire, fire, fire" is running through your head, everything gets harder. See, that's why I ride a motorcycle. In any accident I am thrown safely free of the bike, no chance of being stuck inside while it burns.

AmmoniumAcetate posted:I was under the impression that since the suits are fire proof enough to keep you safe, in theory, until you or somebody else could pull you out of the car, the danger was in the fire just eating all of the oxygen while you suffocate. They are fire resistant up to a point. But one of the issues to keep in mind is that gasoline fires burn at around 1800 degrees. So you may not get fire being applied directly to the skin but at some point the nomex is going to let some of that heat in. At which point you start getting burns just from the heat. Nomex is amazing stuff but it's got limits. And the goal isn't so much to keep the driver alive till someone else gets there, but to give the driver time to extract themselves from the car. If something happens and you get injured enough that you can't extract yourself, in a fire situation then your odds of survival start dropping. Sagebrush posted:I can't imagine that the guy relying on an iPad app to navigate his boat has any clue of how to find his location on a chart with latitude and longitude coordinates. Quite a few allow for methanol, but now they add coloring agents so you can tell it's on fire. I'll keep the fire risk if it means continuing to be able to use HANS devices.
