I dropped my phone and smashed the poo poo out of the screen, but there's no problem with the touch functions at all. I'm due a replacement so I'm just going to buy a new one, but if I was going to try to fix it so I had a spare (it's a decent phone, Nexus 5X) do I just need a glass replacement or do I need a full replacement screen/LCD assembly?

Edit: nevermind, I looked it up and apparently these things have a bonded glass panel and touchscreen, so it's almost impossible to fix without specialist tools. Disregard!

I'm not sure what you think "specialist tools" are, but if that's "something to bond the digitizer (touch screen) and LCD together" it's not really a thing outside of wholesale quantities.....they are sold together as an assembly for like $60.

To replace one, while it's a big deal for someone who's not accustomed to working on small electronics, it's absolutely something that someone who gets paid $15 an hour at a mall kiosk can do in like 15 minutes. Not a super technical operation.

In fact, I taught my 13 year old nephew to do this and he's replaced multiple LG, samsung and iPhone screens all on his own with very few problems. His "training" lasted about an hour and then I handed him like $15 worth of tools.

Regarding kettles: I was in a discussion about the EU's former plans to limit kettle wattage. I can understand why they would want to regulate efficiency, but why would they limit wattage? From my understanding, an efficient low-watt kettle will use the same kW/h as an equally efficient high-wattage one, because of the time factor. Is this a true claim?

Yeah. In fact, assuming equal efficiency you would presume a higher Watt kettle is marginally more efficient than a lower one because it boils the water faster, leaving less time for heat to escape.

I looked up these EU plans and it's just a classic case of tabloids cherry picking stats to make headlines. Kettles are just one of 29 things on the list, and the recommendation is primarily revolving around increasing the durability of the kettles so they last longer. It seems like they weren't focusing on banning higher wattage kettles, although I assume it would be a consideration, purely because it forces manufacturers to produce more efficient kettles made of better materials in order to increase the speed of the boil. It's bad practice to put a 3000W heating element in a lovely plastic body with no insulation, yet that is a pretty standard thing you see.

Suppose, hypothetically speaking, that the Earth was no longer in a constant orbit around the Sun but instead in a very slow death spiral. Moving maybe a few yards closer over the course of each circle.

How long would it be before we were aware of it? And also how long would it be before the effects became obvious to everyone, rather than just those with the equipment to precisely measure our distance from the Sun?

The Earth is ~160 billion yards from the Sun. A few yards per year is nothing. The effects would never become obvious to anyone unless they got in a time machine and moved forward in time by billions of years. The Earth's orbit is already not a perfect circle, and our distance to the sun varies between our closest and furthest points to the sun (perihelion and aphelion) by more than 5 billion yards over the course of a year.

So in a manner of speaking, you are already in a position to judge what it feels like to be in a death spiral, except we pull up from it every year, only to fall back down. The Northern Hemisphere experiences summer during aphelion, and is actually relatively warmer than the Southern Hemisphere due to having more landmass. That should show that a few billion yards here or there isn't too relevant in the grand scheme of planetary temperature.

The "goldilocks" zone's inner edge, an area which is disputed, is somewhere like 10-20% closer to the Sun than we are now. Overall I'd say we'd begin to notice a few centigrade difference over 1-2 billion years, not accounting for any other developments/life-cycle of the Sun itself, but it would take a while before things really got uncomfortable.

As a side note, we are actually not in constant orbit, but are in fact already in a very slow death spiral away from the Sun, but at a rate of only a fraction of a yard per year.

e: also I didn't mention this but since the Sun is getting hotter and brighter on that sort of timescale, so you could probably move that clock forward. I think it's something like 1% increase in luminosity every 100 million years and a correlative increase in heat energy. In the end, unless the death spiral was much faster, the sun's life-cycle will destroy life on this planet first.

To add to Jeza's answer, read up on Milankovitch cycles. The Earth's orbit changes in predictable ways over the course of thousands of years which has a significant impact on global climate.

Ok, so scrap "a few yards a year". Let's speed things up and also, let me ask the question backwards - how fast would the Earth need to spiral towards the Sun in order for us to start getting into the inner edge of that Goldilocks zone in about 250 years?

That'd be somewhere around 30,000-40,000 miles a year, so close to 100 miles a day. Every 80 days we'd be a whole Earth diameter closer in.

It is Schubert's Serenade. The reason you're finding it hard to hear that song is because it's simplified and in what sounds like almost triple tempo.

Get a used Kinect and Nike+ Kinect Training or Zumba Fitness Core for the 360. Maybe Dance Central if that's what you'd prefer to do instead of normal exercise routines.

Could be a lot of things, do you have a garbage disposal or dishwasher connected? How old is the plumbing?

Does your sink have a trap? I've seen a house where they installed it without for some bizarre reason so they got gases from the septic tank drifting up. If that's the problem then install a trap. Another possibility along this line is that your sink overflow is connected to the wrong side of the trap.

More likely, there's just some nasty organic stuff stinking it up and living in the trap. First, flush your sink very thoroughly. Then get some drano and use it as directed a couple of times. It'll rip up all the organic stuff and stink really bad for a bit. After waiting as directed thoroughly flush..

That looks like relatively new PVC, which means someone hosed up hard. You need to put in a trap.

Someone put in a vanity with drawers instead of doors. When they got it all put together, the drawer wouldn't close (notice the slide) because of the trap, so they pulled it and just put in straight pipe bypassing the trap. You now have raw sewer gas coming up into your bathroom. Have someone install a trap, which will probably entail buying a new vanity.

I'm really not an expert on classical music. I've heard it before somewhere and that's about it. I can tell you that la danse macabre is a pretty old allegory. That's why there's so much medieval/Renaissance art of sweet dancing skeletons. It's generally just your regular meditation that we're all going to die and everybody is equal in death.

About 8 years ago I had a really gross/weird thing happen and it remains unexplained to this day and is bugging me. Warning! It is gross. I woke up one morning and most of the skin on my palms had turned into some sort of disgusting yellow crust. It was peeling and translucent and would become sticky when wet. The best description of it I can think of was dried snot from someone with a really bad sinus infection, except it was the skin on my hands. By the early afternoon it was freaking me out so much I just went to town on it with a scrub brush and got rid of all of it, leaving the thin bloody, raw layers of skin underneath. It completely healed in like one day and never reoccured.

At the time I convinced myself I had syphilis after going into a Web MD K-hole, but went into the doctor who tested me (and laughed when I told him what I thought I had) for that amongst other things, with no positive results, but I don't remember actually getting a good explanation for what the hell happened there and it remains baffling to me to this day.

Looking around I figure it had to be some form of this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desquamation but I have absolutely no idea what caused it.
