You know, after a couple of years of listening to the same rotation of albums on a USB thumb drive in my car, I feel like I'm basically burning out on my old staples from when I was younger and it's time to start expanding my collection. Two nearly opposite requests: Recently, I fell in love with Ghost (or Ghost BC). Switching gears, my hip hop tastes lie with RTJ(especially 2) and Death Grips, although recently i'm all about Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7fpqaX3K9M new track from Your Old Droog. Specifically, I like the weird production behind the (good) lyrics. I like the interesting samples and how bizarre a lot of the music is. Danny Brown specifically has these like middle eastern cymbals and weird lilting vocal samples and it's very spooky and interesting. So who else is doing weird poo poo behind the vocals like DB and YOD?

It is the music from a free CD offered as a marketing tie-in to the video game called XIII. It was released in 2003, which was a high point in chill music if I recall correctly. And if you love RTJ but haven't gone back and listened to everything El-P has been a part of, you're loving up.

I'm not even sure if this is some kind of subgenre of hip hop I'm diggin, but I was hoping to hear more artists as follows: 1. Insight 2. Binary Star 3. Edan 4. One. Be. Lo 5. Deltron 3030 6. And some of them are still putting out good music so I'll skip those. Also there's tons of recommendations I could give since most of the stuff you named is basically 2000's underground rap, but I'll try to highlight a few notables and some folks doing similar stuff now. For a chill vibe check out Murs & 9th Wonder's stuff, Cryptic One, Louis Logic, Slum Village, Quasimoto, Mos Def, Jurrasic 5, Illogic, Soul Position, Aceyalone, Mos Def, and Blueprint. Most of them are gonna be similar to a lot of what you listed-strong lyrics with a lot more mellow/jazz-based production. Going a touch outside of "chill", I'd recommend Aesop Rock, Deep Puddle Dynamics, Them, the Handsome Boy Modeling School records, and Anti-pop Consortium for some more "experimental" sounds; Weathermen, Cage, J-Zone, the Demigodz, Copywrite, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, P.O.S., and Tame One for a bit more aggressive/boom bap feel. Also Sage Francis for someone who bounces back and forth-his "sick of" series of tapes is gonna have a lot more boom bap punchline style, where his more formal albums typically are a bit more thematic. As above some of those dudes are still putting out good music (especially Aesop Rock who some folks would argue is even better now). Also check out Kanye West because he's got something for pretty much everyone. As for newer dudes, pyramid vitra and zeroh both have a lot of the Shabazz Palaces vibe. You can check out Khalil Nova for a bit rougher version of the same kind of stuff. Also the Issue & Big War project. BLACKIE is basically a good death grips so that could be someone else to check out. The aforementioned Open Mike Eagle and Busdriver are also dudes who are still putting out stuff that should be up your alley (although both have been around for awhile)-also check the other Hellfyre dudes Nocando and Milo. Homeboy Sandman is fairly chill, and dude can definitely rap. Quelle Chris is another detroit cat like Danny Brown who's making really chill music-he dropped an album this year that's probably my most listened to so far. If you wanna get real spicy you can check out Lil Ugly Mane's stuff (although he's about as far from uppers as you can get). That's a bunch of names and whatnot, but most of them you can find on spotify/youtube to get samples. If you like something specific or want album recommendations, ask in the rap thread and I'll go more into detail since there's about 100 more names I could drop that's in the same vein (I dig much the same stuff).

I know I've heard there's some labels/agents for artists that their sole responsibility is checking music for samples they can make claims on, so you lose some of the soul/jazz/etc sound in production. That's a legitimate thing that's caused a shift in sounds outside of just tastes and whatever else so it's harder to get some things in the same style as older music (unless the artist has bank or just doesn't care, which does happen sometimes).

Maybe some of Sam the Sham's garage rock contemporaries? You might enjoy the Young Rascals, which is how the Rascals were credited on their first three albums (The Young Rascals, Collections and Groovin') before they changed their name and their sound. I think they generally had a higher level of musicianship than a lot of their contemporaries. Maybe consider Bad Manners, who were a British 2 Tone band from the early 1980s. The albums to look for are Ska 'N' B, Loonee Tunes, Gosh It's... Bad Manners and Forging Ahead.
