Hello NMD!

Couple of requests...

Can I have some recommendations on something similar to Japandroids and Smoke or Fire? Basically some upbeat but not cheesy punk stuff.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjnehw6SXJ4

Also I need some good working music in the same vein as E.R.P or Global Communications or even something acid-y like Donato Dozzy.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdW6Hj1D5mk

Thanks!

i havent listened to punk in like 5 or 6 years so i dont know whats cool now. but you might like no age, so so glos, male bonding, wipers, hot snakes, cloud nothings. bands like that.

as for the other i assume you are familiar with neel and voices from the lake if you know dozzy? also erp's stuff as convextion. and mark pritchard's other stuff if you know global communication. otherwise i would suggest like. future sound of london, afx - analords, drexciya, underground resistance, basic channel, jeff mills, legowelt, orgue electronique, i-f, unit moebius, willie burns, actress, vril, ectomorph, stanislav tolkachiev, acronym, rrose, lucy....

especially look into labels like clone, bunker (the netherlands label not the bunker nyc although maybe you'd like them too), creme organization, interdimensional transmissions, transmat, metroplex, axis, etc

I fucking hate puzzles.
You know, after a couple of years of listening to the same rotation of albums on a USB thumb drive in my car, I feel like I'm basically burning out on my old staples from when I was younger and it's time to start expanding my collection. As far as the directions I'm looking to expand these are the current items that I'm really big on:

Downtempo rock/alternative and/or stuff that has a good groove to it:

This guy has a pretty boss Youtube channel for rare and unfamiliar music. Lots of obscure old punk, cool-rear end world music for example compilations of 70's African electronica and Soviet new wave:

If anyone has any suggestions for albums or compilations, I'm on the lookout for some upbeat, instrumental (or mostly instrumental) psychedelic space music.

In that same slinky, breathy female vocals vein, you can look at Morcheeba, Massive Attack, or Bitter:Sweet.

More broadly, you could try anything from Airlock to DJ Shadow to the Dining Rooms... or just throw a dart at a list of releases on the Ninja Tune label.

Recently, I fell in love with Ghost (or Ghost BC). Songs like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0Ao4t_fe0I Cirice and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqoyKzgkqR4 Square Hammer are really catchy even as they are cheeseball satanic metal. I'm a big fan of power metal, but this fells a little more... gothy? what's the word? Anyway, if you know any more sing-a-long satanism, send it my way.

Switching gears, my hip hop tastes lie with RTJ(especially 2) and Death Grips, although recently i'm all about Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7fpqaX3K9M new track from Your Old Droog. Specifically, I like the weird production behind the (good) lyrics. I like the interesting samples and how bizarre a lot of the music is. Danny Brown specifically has these like middle eastern cymbals and weird lilting vocal samples and it's very spooky and interesting. So who else is doing weird poo poo behind the vocals like DB and YOD?

I want to offer you a thing. It is the music from a free CD offered as a marketing tie-in to the video game called XIII. It was released in 2003, which was a high point in chill music if I recall correctly. It is about 40 minutes long and it all strings together over 13 tracks, one being an intro.

Here's the first music track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUqEG7dSkfE

If you or anyone else would like the rest of it, PM me or something. The whole thing is 47.6 MB but I can email it or put it on google drive or somethin. I figure it should be ok because seriously you could just pick up the cd off the shelf in best buy and walk out for free.

Ghost's two most obvious reference points (at least on Opus Eponymous which is all I've heard) are Blue Oyster Cult and Mercyful Fate. There's also a wave of retro hard rock/metal bands that they're a part of, which you may like. Check out Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats and Jess and the Ancient Ones for starters.

1. Insight
2. Binary Star
3. Edan
4. One. Be. Lo
5. Deltron 3030
6. Mr. Lif
7. SADEVILLAIN (I know it's not a real collab between MF DOOM and Sade but love it anyways) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZSY9lO0S-I
8. Cannibal Ox
9. Company Flow
10. Wu-tang & GZA
11. Shabazz Palaces

Also dig the hell out of Death Grips and Danny Brown, more of the former - specifically their Money Store & Exmilitary & Bottomless Pit. I've tried Dalek on recommendation and while I did find the sound similar, I think it's on a different drug.

I guess I like my rap either pretty old and chill or toothless and cranked on uppers. Any recommendations?

I'm going to assume you've looked into the catalogs of the dudes you mentioned-a lot of them are fairly deep so there's plenty there to mine. And some of them are still putting out good music so I'll skip those.

Also there's tons of recommendations I could give since most of the stuff you named is basically 2000's underground rap, but I'll try to highlight a few notables and some folks doing similar stuff now. For a chill vibe check out Murs & 9th Wonder's stuff, Cryptic One, Louis Logic, Slum Village, Quasimoto, Mos Def, Jurrasic 5, Illogic, Soul Position, Aceyalone, Mos Def, and Blueprint. Most of them are gonna be similar to a lot of what you listed-strong lyrics with a lot more mellow/jazz-based production. Going a touch outside of "chill", I'd recommend Aesop Rock, Deep Puddle Dynamics, Them, the Handsome Boy Modeling School records, and Anti-pop Consortium for some more "experimental" sounds; Weathermen, Cage, J-Zone, the Demigodz, Copywrite, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, P.O.S., and Tame One for a bit more aggressive/boom bap feel. Also Sage Francis for someone who bounces back and forth-his "sick of" series of tapes is gonna have a lot more boom bap punchline style, where his more formal albums typically are a bit more thematic. As above some of those dudes are still putting out good music (especially Aesop Rock who some folks would argue is even better now). Also check out Kanye West because he's got something for pretty much everyone.

As for newer dudes, pyramid vitra and zeroh both have a lot of the Shabazz Palaces vibe. You can check out Khalil Nova for a bit rougher version of the same kind of stuff. Also the Issue & Big War project. BLACKIE is basically a good death grips so that could be someone else to check out. The aforementioned Open Mike Eagle and Busdriver are also dudes who are still putting out stuff that should be up your alley (although both have been around for awhile)-also check the other Hellfyre dudes Nocando and Milo. Homeboy Sandman is fairly chill, and dude can definitely rap. Quelle Chris is another detroit cat like Danny Brown who's making really chill music-he dropped an album this year that's probably my most listened to so far. If you wanna get real spicy you can check out Lil Ugly Mane's stuff (although he's about as far from uppers as you can get).

That's a bunch of names and whatnot, but most of them you can find on spotify/youtube to get samples. If you like something specific or want album recommendations, ask in the rap thread and I'll go more into detail since there's about 100 more names I could drop that's in the same vein (I dig much the same stuff).

Kringy

Thanks, I'll be checking out those dudes. I could tell you that EL-P, Busdriver, and Open Mike Eagle's catchin my ears right now.

I believe the last time I crept up here asking for recommendations, you also dropped the motherload on me. Much appreciated and those recs have been on my playlist. Was also lurking around in the rap thread but man, hard to dig the stuff under discussion there.

Yeah most of the discussion focuses around new stuff, with a heavy emphasis on mumble rappers/trap dudes. But there's folks who like other stuff, so if you have questions just feel free to ask. And also for some older stuff, it's just generally understood that people there know about it or w/e so it doesn't get brought up much.

I will say though, that a lot of production has been forced to change in styles due to sampling laws and whatnot. I know I've heard there's some labels/agents for artists that their sole responsibility is checking music for samples they can make claims on, so you lose some of the soul/jazz/etc sound in production. That's a legitimate thing that's caused a shift in sounds outside of just tastes and whatever else so it's harder to get some things in the same style as older music (unless the artist has bank or just doesn't care, which does happen sometimes).

Maybe some of Sam the Sham's garage rock contemporaries? You might enjoy the Young Rascals, which is how the Rascals were credited on their first three albums (The Young Rascals, Collections and Groovin') before they changed their name and their sound. I think they generally had a higher level of musicianship than a lot of their contemporaries.

Maybe consider Bad Manners, who were a British 2 Tone band from the early 1980s. The albums to look for are Ska 'N' B, Loonee Tunes, Gosh It's... Bad Manners and Forging Ahead.

What are some good low rock/blues rock bands, that I should add to my collection? I've got, as far as I know, the whole Morphine suite, i.e. Morphine, Twinemen, Treat Her Right, Bourbon Princess, and A.K.A.C.O.D., are there any other bands that would sit well in the mix?
