The timeshare folk in the lobby of the Caesar hotels (Ballys/PlanetHollywood) are relentless. I admire how sneaky they are in their "oh it'll just be a short lunch and presentation and then after that you're set for a free dinner, show and $50 casino credit".

Any recommended car rental places on the strip. I was thinking I was going to go with the one in my hotel (Ballys) but they quoted me at $115 for a day and that seems a bit out of whack with what I've heard in passing.

For the timeshare folks, just say "I'm local" and they'll leave you alone.

For the rentals, I don't know of a specific place. But I do know you'll never get a good price by just walking up to a counter. Set up a reservation online to get any kind of special pricing they may have. I learned this the hard way when I sold a car and had to rent for about week before I bought a new one. I walked into the giant rental car building south of the airport and go a rental. I went home, checked the prices online, and I would have saved myself about 50% if I had booked beforehand.

I know this has been discussed a million times before (as have all topics here), but what are the opinions on doing Vegas during the height of summer? July or early August. It is unlikely there is a workable date for my bachelor party outside those dates (though I'm looking at some very early options in May or June but those are busy times for everyone involved).

I know people think it's nuts, and others think it's not a big deal. I don't see us doing much outdoors other than walking around the strip (which can be done at night, or in short bursts) and hitting the pools/poolparties. Probably a typical bachelor party kind of trip - food, booze, strippers, gambling, recover - repeat over and over again. I'm not very concerned about shooting guns or golfing or hiking or whatever. I feel like it's not a big deal, but I'm a little concerrned things might be slower at the pools if people can't handle the heat?

I might be wrong in my numbers here, but if it's 115F and sunny during the day on the strip, at night it's 110F and dark. I'm exaggerating some, but you will not walk out at 9pm and think "Finally, a break from this intense heat!". It's worse during the day, but it's loving hot at night.

That said, it's weather, you are walking from air conditioned space to air conditioned space, I've done Vegas over the 4th of July and it's not that bad.

So fiance and I are heading to Vegas for part of our honeymoon in early April. We'd like to spend a night or two out clubbing (she never had the chance to go and is jealous of stories of some of the spectacle at places like Moon and Tao years back when I was tagged along to a group doing table service). Since it's just the two of us, table service would be prohibitively expensive, but we'd rather not wait in those ungodly lines outside. Where should we go for spectacle and how do we go about getting on a list?

Sorry for the late reply... Pre-sale tickets were mentioned, but at a number of the clubs the pre-sale and GA lines are the same, at least until you get to the cash registers. Getting in quickly is going to be more a factor of showing up early before the club fills up and the line slows to a crawl. Another option is to arrange a "handshake" entry with a club host where you tip to bypass the line. You may also be able to find 1-bottle tables on non-weekend days, although that's still going to be $600+. Most of the actual guest lists I know of are for hot girls (especially in groups) that are getting free entry and sometimes at least an hour of open bar to show up relatively early and get the party going.

In terms of clubs, the newest major club is Omnia in Caesars. I haven't been but I've heard it's flashy and fairly GA friendly. I'd probably recommend XS over Marquee or Hakkasan for GA, XS has spaces inside where you can see the DJ without being on a table or the dancefloor, whereas Marquee inside has a tiny dancefloor tables, and the "ring of death" walkway where you need to keep walking or the bouncers will ask you to keep moving. There is lots of space outside by the Marquee pool though. If you like hip-hop Drai's can be a good time.

Another option is Marquee Dayclub; they have a dome over their pool to keep it warm during the winter and early spring. The minimums to get a daybed or a chair/pool chaise are usually a lot lower than a table at the nightclubs and you can spend it on food and pitchers of drinks, not just bottles.

The strip is long and takes a much longer time to walk than you think. Therefore, you might want to avoid stuff on the outskirts (i.e. stay South of Circus Circus and North of Excalibur).

You can get cheap hotels for ridiculously cheap in Vegas (e.g. Harrah's, Flamingo, Linq, Luxor). These are okay, and basically will stack up to any random small town hotel you'd stay in at the states. Not especially nice, but clean and with all the usual amenities.

However, you can also get incredibly nice rooms for much cheaper than you'd get in other places. If you're looking for a relaxing, romantic trip for a few days, getting a nice room is a great way to feel like you're getting the real Vegas experience. The Cosmopolitan, MGM, Wynn, Palazzo, etc. are all good spots for this. Splurge for a suite if you can - it's worth it.

Recommendations to do the Hoover Dam or Grand Canyon? Is it better to just rent a car for a day or use a company?
It's easy to rent a car and I'm not super fond of long bus tours, so personally I'd just rent a car.

If you're not into gambling, 3 nights is usually pretty good. Some folks get really burned out in Vegas, although I think that's usually because they take short trips and just try to cram as much in as possible. Staying 4 nights will give you a few days to just explore around, hang out, and visit other parts of the city without the pressure of feeling like you have to go clubbing every single night.

Staying 5+ nights is probably only for the gambling degens (me).

Does the $20 thing really work?
I've never tried it, but in general I've heard that yes, it works very often, especially when things aren't too busy and they have more rooms to give away.

Memorial Day Weekend is probably the busiest weekend of the year next to Labor Day Weekend so budget and be prepared for lines accordingly.

Helicopter Tour of the Grand Canyon is the way to go. But renting a car isn't a bad idea.

For the nightclubs/dayclubs pre-sale tickets are usually the way to go, but walking up to the front with $100 per person in your hand will almost always work. Memorial Day Weekend is different though.

Regarding the hotel bookings, shoot me an email or PM and I'll have someone get it done directly.

Should we use a promoter to get us into the Beach/Day Clubs or just buy tickets on the website? Seems like every website has some ~*SUPER SPECIAL*~ only available through them. (JaySB, you still doing the promoting or running this thread for fun?)

Finally, if we go for 3 nights/4 days... it's looking like $900 round trip airfare for two on SWA, ~400/hotel, and about $1k for activities? That sound right? I know Vegas isn't a place to do on a budget, but trying to plan here.

The MJ Cirque show is great. Absinthe is the best show in Vegas. My best friend just went to Carrot Top and said it's awesome and cheap.

I don't promote but I can put you in touch with someone who can get you in the clubs if you need.

I dunno where you're flying from but you can probably get cheaper airfare than that. Hotel I would budget ~$150/nt for a good room but you can do it for less for sure. $1k activities is probably plenty if you're not going to fancy dinners or getting bottles at the club.

The $20 trick works like a dream when they have availability. The only time it hasn't worked for me when I was checking into MGM on a Friday and they were hosting a UFC PPV and a huge convention on Saturday so the hotel was absolutely packed, and even then the front desk guy was searching on his computer for like 5 minutes before he just gave me the $20 back and said they didn't have anything. But I've used it successfully at Caesars, Flamingo, MGM, and Mirage for a pretty substantial upgrade in rooms. If you and GF are dead set on a nicer room than you should just book one and be done with it.. But if it's more of an optional thing I would definitely try the $20 trick, especially if you are arriving midweek.

I was going to write basically this. I've never had it *not* work. I've received some upgrades that were like "you *were* in a 300s/f room with a desert view, you've been upgraded to a 320s/f room with a desert view" where I wasn't quite sure what the upgrade actually was, but doing some web sleuthing definitely showed that I was in a category above what I booked. I've also had the desk guy do the nose-into-the-computer for 5 minutes bit, and give the $20 back after a fail. I've found it helps to be specific and reasonable, i.e. "I'm really hoping for a corner room" or "I know I booked a desert view but I was really hoping to get a strip view". Shoot for something that is 1-2 categories up from whatever you booked. Don't book the boiler-room double queen and slyly say "I was wondering if the penthouse was available".

Booked a $99 priceline special (opaque) at Aria, got upgraded to a 1BR SkySuite that is probably the nicest room I've ever been in. It was going for $1k/night.
Booked a 1br suite at Bellagio, got upgraded to a Penthouse. (A desert view penthouse, but still, a penthouse.) . It was bigger than my 3br house.
Have received a strip view instead of a desert view a lot, at various properties. Also a high floor, which is worth something.
Got upgraded to a 1br from a studio at Trump. 1br's are on the corner, so that was nice, but I later stayed in a studio which I found to be nicer and felt bigger than the 1br anyhow.
Had my dad do the $20 thing at Trump and told him to say "do you have anything on a high floor?" He got a 1br on the 60th floor, he said his ears popped in the elevator. Scored me big points with my dad.

I won't detail the times it's crapped out (it happens), I can't remember where I got the lovely upgrade from a regular room to a very slightly bigger regular room. When I learned this trick it was told to me "Vegas is a gambling town, this $20 is your first gamble when you arrive" and if you look at it that way you really can't lose. You would lay $20 on a blackjack table, worst case scenario you've got $0, best case scenario you've got $40... IMHO this has way better odds.

The best upgrade I ever got was by simply ASKING for an upgrade (no 20!) at MGM Signature. Ended up with a super awesome strip-view, upper floor w/ balcony. At least 2-3 levels above what I booked. I was also staying for 4 nights and booked directly with them, so that might have helped

I stay in hotels all the time. Every time, I try and check in with a great attitude, jovial, chatty, smiling, the best customer they'll deal with all day. Asking for an upgrade (no $20) probably works 25-50% of the time. If you're staying at a Courtyard or something, every room is the same and there's nothing they can upgrade you to. But in a 4* or 5* hotel, the odds of being polite and getting an upgrade are pretty good.

Both, kinda? One benefit is that you'll likely pay less than those who are paying the door cover, or less than those who buy tickets later online as nightclubs often tier their pricing based on how many have sold (like this event apparently started at $30 male/$20 female based on XS' website and is $55/$35 as I look now). XS has only one GA line that handles both presale and door sales, but at some point in the line you'll be able to skip past the people waiting to pay. Generally presale guarantees entry, but only if you arrive fairly early, I think usually midnight or so. It should say on the ticket. It's also possible that they will stop selling at the door if the club fills; once the club fills the line to get in stops until people start leaving. They'll let you stand in line but it may be a long line.

Also be aware if you weren't already that XS does have a dress code and they will refuse entry if you don't meet it. Also XS has an indoor and outdoor area, and if you are outside when the inside is too full they'll stop people from going back inside. That irritates some people but I personally prefer the outside. Chainsmokers are hot right now so I'd expect a fairly heavy crowd so arriving early is probably a good idea.

The alternative to this is just to show up whenever you want with $100pp in hand and get right in. But it sort of depends on your time value of money. Headliners don't go on until 1:30am. So you can show up at 10:30-11, stand in line for 30 minutes to an hour+++ depending on the weekend and how busy it is and then bump around in the crowd until the headliner goes on. Or just show up at 1am and walk right in having tipped the door person.

"Handshaking" your way in is a viable method, but for chainsmokers I suspect the door will be at/close to $100, so it'd need to be more, especially if you haven't dealt with the host previously.

Thank you for helping goons and I'm not trying to challenge you. I think your advice of $100pp would work for most nights. I just worry about it being the Chainsmokers; they are Wynn Nightlife's premier residency and the new hot thing. I know from friends that even back-wall tables for Chainsmokers go for a $4-5k min and my suspicion as I said is that door price will hit $100. If that suspicion is correct I can't see them taking only $100 to skip the line and get in unless you know someone. I might be wrong; it is April and not Saturday, but...
