This italian heart breaker is what i drive every day. I had a B5 Passat Variant 1.8T before i bought this one, and although i thought it was cool as hell it was getting a bit long in the tooth (160.000 miles on the odometer), and i was tired of changing the oil and filter every 5000 miles.

And so, i swallowed the entire "La meccanica delle emozioni"-thing they have going on with hook, line and sinker and got the Alfa Romeo. So far, the "emozionis" i've felt the most is the anguish when my money is waving good bye to my bank account and any further dealings with me. I had to shell out like $4000 for an entirly new gear box (the M32 gearbox is a masterpiece of tight packaging - but Getrag neglected the fact that the shafts carrying the 5th and 6th gear actually need lubricating oil to work like assumed, so the bearings spin their races and then explode, taking with it the gearbox casing and anything else that happens to be in the way) and it looks like i might have to buy some new xenon ballasts as well. Oh well, one never needs to worry about what to spend money on when owning an Alfa Romeo!

BUT IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!

2008 Alfa Romeo 159 Ti Sport Wagon 16V

Oh, and it's a diesel.
Nice! My first choice was a 159 as well, but I didn't want diesel and couldn't find a JTS one that I liked enough.

There are rebuild kits for the M32, places that rebuild it, and cheaper refurbed gearboxes to be had. I've got a MiTo with the very same M32 gearbox. No problems so far, and I'm pretty confident that I can replace the bearings myself for a couple of hundred bucks if the dreaded telltale signs of whine / vibration / in 6th gear ever occur. A top tip is to replace the gearbox oil at decent intervals and use what the specialists recommend (Fuchs Titan Sintofluid if I remember correctly). First thing I did when I bought the car was to replace the engine and gearbox fluid as I don't trust dealers / workshops to know enough about it (even if it's a pretty Fiat Punto with many shared parts).

I enjoy my little 155hp monster. It looks great and always stands out (I think I've seen 3 other MiTos in my town of 300k people). People seem to enjoy looking at it as well. Sadly it isn't really what I'm looking for in a car long term. It's great for driving around town, but is tiring as hell when driving at motorway speeds. I can't decide whether to keep it until we know how reliable the Giulias will be, or to get something bigger in between. I wish they'd release a 6 cylinder non QV one.

Edit: Also, I don't know where you are located at (Looks like northern Europe?), but ebay.de/co.uk has good prices on Alfa Parts.

Edit: VVV Yeah who am I kidding. The only thing that I dislike about it is that it's either all the way to QV for a 6 cylinder, or it's 4 cylinder turbos. I'd love a 350hp V6 in a non QV spec (and cost).

Yes i am aware of that. However, none of the garages i spoke to did rebuilds anymore. Something about the pre-tensioning of the bearings that was very hard to get right, and it would be just as bad again within half a year they said. I trawled the internet for local specialist shops that would rebuild manual gearboxes, but all were specialized in automatic gearboxes only. I then tried to contact a used parts dealer in the UK (where there are plenty more 159s than in Norway, where i am situated) but they never really responded. As you probably can understand, removing the gearbox and having it shipped internationally was not really an option since i needed the car to get to and from work (i live in the boons). So I finally had to bite the bullet and accepted an offer from a small garage that specializes in italian cars. Good thing i did too, because they found that the thrust bearing/slave cylinder needed to be replaced as well.

I plan to change the transmission oil yearly - and that's really about as much as i can do to avoid the issue again.

I would have put money on that it was Norwegian scenery in the picture :)

If spares / fluid prices are as over inflated in Norway as they are in Sweden I recommend Opie Oils for getting the fluids. Cheap and nice delivery (at least to Sweden). Interesting about the pre-tensioning on the bearings, I'll have to look into it some more. Worst case I'll get a gearbox from Germany and do it myself as fortunately I'm not dependent on the car. Fingers crossed it I'll be spared. Hopefully your new gearbox has the redesigned endplate that allows more oil to reach the 6 gear bearing. Apparently there is no problem with the M32 gearbox according to the manufacturers, yet it was redesigned it to fix the problem....
I'll be changing my oil yearly as well. It's a cheap insurance.

It does have this though

I scored this 1995 Lexus SC300 with a 5 speed manual transmission. 80k miles on it, detailed service history at Lexus for it's entire life and one owner. Completely stock. The guy/dealer I bought it from didn't know exactly what he had, it was more of a novelty for him (lol manual Lexus weird!) and also commented that he didn't want to drive it anymore because soon it would be over 80k and 'in a different price bracket' so I got it for $6200 bucks. Everything works and it's in quite great shape. Needs a detailing (I don't detail cars because I want people to see how I got them - a dumbass seller) and def. needs a tune up, fluid flush and various other typical stuff but wowee I became a Lexus enthusiast overnight. Heck even the multi-disc CD player in the trunk works without issue, and even this thing which I guess never survives?

Same chassis. Several people have gotten these from junkyards and swapped in a JZA80 drivetrain, you can get a Supra with comfortable seats and a Lexus badge for less than half what MKIVs cost these days, and it makes a hell of a sleeper.

You can find way more Turbo 2JZ-swapped SC300s than stock SC300s with a stick (only made 3800 or so total ever manual transmission SC300 during it's whole run from 1992 - 2000)
This all started because I drive my kei van all over the place, my wife is getting a Jimny (kei class version of what the Samurai was based on because a clean stock Samurai when you can find them [you can't] go for 7500) and our Golf R is just going to sit. So we figured let's get an old person car for the times we need the interstate because we're surrounded by snowbirds and their immaculate dealer-maintained luxury barges with 10s of thousands of miles on them and let that sit and get back lots of money on the R while we still can. What turned into a search for a 90 - 2000 LS400 ended up in us buying the not-Supra.

That is a pretty nice one yeah, but we're looking for one with A/C as well. Bummer that the seats have been replaced too but these things were just beat on. Plus with a Jimny we can get one newer that 91 which means a slight power bump and fuel injection along with a tin top (tin top stopped being sold here before the 91 fuel injection switch) and they have some wicked sick graphics on the side sometimes.

From what I've seen if you want a manual you have to get the 300, otherwise you should always go for the 400 because V8. Or get a 400 and to a manual swap on it.

I didn't think I'd actually seriously consider owning a 20 year old car, but I'm actually becoming seriously tempted. It's a functional, very well built, long lasting coupe.

My list of potential vehicles to test-drive in a year or two is becoming longer and longer. (Getting married later this year, not allowed to splurge on a new [to me] car until next year). I may eventually go the sedan route (hello Poop Group Charger), but I love the idea of having a V8 coupe.

My buddy wanted me to help him find a car because he was new in town and needed a car to, you know, get to work in and use to go to the store, all that. I found him a civic just like that one, $500 bucks (and this was in 2013) and it ran wonderfully and even had A/C working. I went and checked it out, talked with the seller, got everything squared away. Then my buddy went 'nah its too old' and bought a 97 Legacy for $1500 bucks (without seeking my advice that he asked for) that burned and leaked oil, didn't have working A/C and had old tires all around. That overheated on him on the highway and threw a rod.

I still mock him constantly for that, stupid stupid move for a car that wasn't nearly as rad as that little Civic.

My friend and roommate for a while had an '83 prelude up until the maybe 2004 or so. My favorite part was in 2001 or 2002 when he needed to replace the clutch. It had been obviously needed for over a year, but he let it go, to the point where he discovered he couldn't park the car (parking brake also shot). We were sitting in our favorite coffee shop and could see the lude outside, and it just... started to roll. "Ben. your car is moving" ... poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo he runs out to the car and is pushing against the hood trying to prevent further movement (if it went 10 feet further it'd roll down a very steep hill. The rest of us were still at our table laughing our assess off when we could hear a desperate COME HELP ME YOU FUCKERS I CAN'T DO THIS from outside. The rest of us came out and assisted him in securing the vehicle. He STILL didn't change the clutch for another 6 months, he was just a lot more careful choosing a parking spot. Same guy is now a literal homeless Motorcycle Vagabond whose entire life is strapped to the back of a 650cc KTM, who earns money for food doing developer work in coffee shops. I feel like I occasionally seen Preludes (and Celicas) nearer to Philly, but they're universally really beat up. Something like one per month or so.

I had two Celicas prior to BMWs, so I tend to notice them, and I pick out the Preludes on the "older Japanese styling" when looking. Yours, or one in similarly great condition, would probably make my head turn. That's just sharp. :)
