Reasons, but mostly that, and now I live somewhere where I'm surrounded by relatively cheap plated WR450's and CRF450X's. I still kind of want a 690. So far I haven't narrowed it down at all, other than figuring out having two sets of wheels for the DRZ and also riding it on dirt is dumb and I should just rebuild my YZ125.

Also I think I may have just been stroking out or having an aneurysm or something but the other day I started thinking about looking for a blown up motor with a cheap ACT gear set in it

Nope. I'm running hotcamsII which i lose some number of stroke, im not home or I'd rattle the specs off. IMO it's fine. Go with webcams if youre chasing 65hp, otherwise eh.

E: 1.27mm reduction in stroke comparing my cheap cams vs the recommended cams. That yields a 8.8cc difference between the two.

What is your background with vehicle maintenance and what work are you performing? Youtube is very useful for the visuals, but any insight of value is probably going to be on a model specific forum unless it's common or well represented here (DRZ, WR, KTM).

If you're really tearing into it a shop manual is worth the price.

Thanks for all of the above, much appreciated!

I grew up doing general car maintenance work with my old man who works on forklifts and increasingly modidying his own car as he gets older. So I know my way around tools and pulling things apart and putting them back together, as well as basics like how to not gently caress poo poo up over-torquing and the like.

Not knowing much about whats important, what affects handling and performance, and what is within the realm of a non-specialist to perform, I'm not sure what I really want to do with my bike. That's why if I want to get my hands on a book that covers everything in at least some depth, then I can pick and choose what I think will make the bike better for me.

I think I'd probably just start with some relatively minor mods, stuff I can get done and back on the road over a weekend. But once I get more confidence I'd like to buy either a poo poo bike and rebuild it or a project bike and try and make it race ready to really get some proper experience. I guess I should say I'm probably more interested in the process of working on the bike itself, rather than what I'll actually get back out of it performance wise.

You're really best off creating a thread here and telling us what you're looking for change-wise - there's a lot of modding you can do to a motorcycle, depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. Without having some direction, you might just end up with us recommending you put apes on your sportbike.

Is that a Hyosung on the lift behind your 701? Did you buy it at some sort of mega-dealer? The very few Husky shops in my area basically only sell dirt bikes and quads, and usually carry Husky and either KTM or Polaris

That's a photo most likely taken in the dealership's service area, not High Protein's garage. Husqvarna's website has a list of all their authorized dealers, I had to preorder and put a deposit down on my 701. I was too impatient so I switched to the Enduro model but a set of wheels will take care of that.

I mean, Sigge at Husqvarna has to make all of them by himself, and is only allowed to make an even number of Enduro and Sumo models. Sigge wishes he could ask Sebastian for help, but KTM owns husky now and they have to follow tradition. This is similar to when Lukas had to make all of the 690's by himself, tirelessly turning out 50 of them in a year.

So of course you couldn't get the one you wanted in a big riding state like Georgia.

Props on finally getting those wheels, and in white, too! You should vinyl wrap half of them in that bright neon yellow.

Yes it's a mega dealer, they've got all the Japanese brands, Aprilia, Ducati, KTM and Husky. And Piaggio and Vespa. They don't sell any dirt/mx bikes though, but there's also dealers I know of that started as dirt-only and then started selling KTM or Husky street bikes.

Brake questions: should I go with an s1000rr and hope it's narrower than the cast monoblock I can't use, or go for the eBay FTE caliper off an Aprilia sxv? If you have personal experience with the FTE I'd like to hear it, it came on the KTM SMR as well and people seemed underwhelmed with the setup. Or if someone can give me a measurement of the s1000 caliper from rotor center to back off caliper, that's great too.

Edit: the monoblock needs 7mm to clear, but wall thickness is less than 5.

Edit 2: Using the highly accurate method of "measuring ratios on eBay pictures", I'm pretty sure the S1000RR caliper is around 3-5 mm narrower than this monobock. I think I'll roll with that instead.

So I've been debating on converting my KLX to a sumo pretty much since I picked it up about a month ago. I've slowly been doing research on it because since mine is first gen ('06) that was only made for 2 years before a redesign nothing is really made for it.

What I think I've decided on is going with Warp9 rims (I know they're not the best, but its what's in my price range) & getting spoke sets made by Buchanan's Spokes and relacing my original hubs. It looks like the price would be about $580 plus whatever tires I decide to go with & new rear sprocket. Am I missing anything super obvious or is that basically it?

It seems like me and my friend are going in opposite directions with our bikes. He has a '09 KLX sumo that he's converting over to dirt trim, I'm doing to opposite.

I just picked up a 2017 WR250R and am loving it. Super sweet ride and got a good hassle free deal from a higher volume dealership at the end of the month. The quest for finding a used Craigslist one that wasn't thrashed/overpriced or sold immediately was too much of a pain.

I too would like to get some sumo wheels for it- again it seems like eBay or new Warp9 wheels seem to be the only reasonable option? Would finding the part number for WR250X wheels and ordering those be a way to go? Is there some other option I don't know about?

Seems like going up in rear sprocket size is common- I'd need a new chain do do that too right?

Any good suggestions for a bike stand? I've always had center stands, but it seems like I need a jack stand or one of those motocross stools?

Any suggestions for DOT sumo tires? Ideally something that works in wet/cold as well.

Congratulations, that's an awesome bike. Having the dirt setup already will benifit you down the road. I doubt you will find a pair of WRx wheels at any reasonable cost. Warp9's are the standard option, and I am not familiar with why people think they are subpar. You could also look into finding some cheap sportbike wheels like GS500 ones and do the conversion, if you feel creative and cheap.

Sprockets- Go straight for 13/45. It's a sublime balance between power and day to day utility, and improves highway power/top speed.

Tires- I had Pilot Streets on mine, and they were "just ok". Long life, decent all around, but I had a speed wobble on the highway that started when I installed them. I also found them to back out of twisties more than expected, which is cool but a mark against the tires.
If you can find Pirelli Sport Demons in your size, I recommend them 9001%. They last forever (almost 10k of highway and hard riding), and handle supernaturally.

Stand- Get this and forget the rest. I did literally everything, front and back, on the WR and EX250 and 690SMC, with just this stand, and I can take it with me if I want. http://www.endurostar.com/ I have a rearstand and I just can't be bothered to use it once I got the trail stand.

The knock on Warp9s is they bend easier than other brands. Not sure if that's because they're thinner or what.

I realized my front rim was warped when spokes started breaking. Never figured out when it happened. You can't bend aluminum rims back to shape from my understanding, so that meant buying a new wheel. Warp9 did throw in a free set of spokes when I did though.

That's terrible. Might as well just go with cheap alloys from other bikes, if you'd have to replace the wheel when you hit something too hard. So I guess the excell rims are the next option up.

To avoid running tubes, I still think alloys are a pretty rad option, if not as durable. This might help if you want to go that route. http://supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?157058-How-To-fit-sport-bike-wheels-to-your-Sumo-without-wheel-bearing-size-change
