On the one hand, they're going to have to learn how to play under pressure and where the line on what you can get away with is (and how to play defense, holy poo poo the goals they let up are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad). On the other hand, if the Toronto media turns against them because they get swept or if it starts to hammer on Lou to make changes to win now the Leafs are probably going to blow the best chance at winning a ring since 1967.
I'd kinda prefer the latter since I already hate the Toronto media and routinely mute the feed if I'm watching a game with Toronto callers.

I don't like the Toronto media at all either but I have to imagine even they can't be so stupid enough as to expect much more from a team in year 2 of a rebuild. The team have already achieved more than expected so anything else should be just fine. Should. I also don't really see Shanahan blowing up the rebuild so soon because of media pressure. They definitely have a plan and stated as such so I'm going to go ahead and believe them that they'll continue with it.

Also, Montreal's media is much worse.

I think if they do pile on the pressure it'll be hard to avoid looking to sign some of the free agents of the day which will limit ice time to prospects who need it and might have a major impact on the ability to resign the legitimate star prospects in 2-3 years time. Also, a successful year this year might lead to them going "well Hunwick and Polak were good on the ice, lets give them 5 years at 3mil each!".

In my experience, Toronto media is worse than Montreal media, because one of them is hidden behind layers of French (and Joual) but I can definitely believe that when you tally it all up, Montreal's is worse (Toronto's is still absolutely terrible, and they need to calm down on fellating Leafs players not called "Rielly, "Marner", "Matthews" or "Nylander"). Having said that, you just know that when Toronto starts winning and all those bandwagon fans show up, I guarantee you Toronto's media will be 10 times worse than it is now, worse than even the rectum of sports media that has produced such turds as L'Antichambre.

It's possible but also seems fairly short sighted for people who have stressed about having a plan, so I'm not sure. We'll see either way. Hope you're wrong! :)

The Bruins had every right to sweep the Leafs back in 2013, but instead the Leafs pushed the series as far as it could possibly go. Then it ended the way it did, so maybe we should just accept and love the inevitable curb stompings.

The Leafs were the worst team in the league a year ago. It's March and they have a good shot at making the playoffs with a roster that's at the cap floor. A huge chunk of their dead money contracts will be off the books next year. They could get swept by the Bruins in the first round with 4 consecutive games that start 4-1 and end 4-5 for Boston and it would still be a successful season.

They are going to re-sign Polak and protect Matt Martin so it's not all roses, but things are looking pretty good for Edmonton East.

This seems like the wise course of action, but I wonder who are they going to pick up to expose? I guess there are more than a couple UFA goalies avilable this summer, but you presumably want someone decent if you're expecting to hold onto him. Or I guess just stash someone in the AHL.

I would be happy to have them move back into Nassau county. The trip to a game went from about 25 minutes by car to an 1:20 by train from western Suffolk. The Barclays scheduling also sucks for me since the islanders have all of like 3 Wednesday or Friday night games all season because the Nets get scheduling priority those nights. Those are my nights off from work and I haven't been able to make it to a game all year.

It's not laziness that keeps me from seeing games.

You gotta give Doug Armstrong credit for one thing: He knew this Blues' roster wasn't a true competitor when he traded Shattenkirk.

I can understand fans from the far reaches of Long Island skipping games, especially if the train trip is more than an hour. I can understand families, who now might have to pay $20 per person to get to Brooklyn instead of per carload to park. But there are plenty of fans who, like me, live about 30 minutes away by train but can’t be bothered to go to a game, even when they live on a train line that doesn’t require changing at Jamaica. And those fans, willing to abandon the team over a train ticket and an extra 10 minutes of travel time, make up an alarming majority of the fan base.

Serious question, if Fleury were to get hurt somehow to the point that he was still injured in June, what does that do to that plan? So even considering a nightmare scenario where Murray is the one that has to go, Vegas still wouldn't get him. There are enough teams out there to stoke a bidding war and the Pens would get a decent, if not fair-value return. In no scenario does Vegas get Murray for free.

I thought LV can still negotiate with teams that want to protect someone that would be exposed right up until the expansion draft. So the Pens could still theoretically pay LV to not take Murray. It would probably cost them a gently caress ton though.

e: Like, LV could be all "OK we wont take Murray but it will cost you a Malkin" and then they trade their 7th round pick for Malkin and Murray protection.
