The pattern feels a bit different from the ones I've seen. Less interest overall, I think. For comparison, the VTEC Mini didn't have any last hour bids: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-austin-mini/

I have a max bid, but it's definitely tempered by how hot the bidding is.

Phhhh, it's over. I put in that last bid and closed the browser tab. I knew I would have kept going. I told Muffinpox that I'd probably go to 26, and my very limit before the bidding started was 26740 (for $1337 in fees), but I was extremely worried I would go over it. This is a car that I'd have paid maybe 28 for if it was going to be ready to drive in Mass. I think I made the right choice to stay out of it at this price.

Enjoy the Boxster while you build your own, which would make for an even better thread.

Saw a cheap salvage Elise for sale, and the dealer was being typically sleazy/evasive about what had happened to it (repaint from keying!). Here's what really happened: http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f231/thread-all-wrecked-lotus-cars-please-reply-vin-any-links-more-info-67166/index2.html#post1401741

That is a genius idea for a car community like that - low volume, high likelihood of write-offs, for reasons that may or may not be concerning to the future owner.

I'm surprised it's not more common with small volume car communities. Picked up the Boxster. I really miss the gated shifter . Keep trying to put it into 2nd. Stalled at a light twice not realizing that's what I'd done. Missed the big race, but still passed by:

They're reliable, it's just the occasional unpreventable catastrophic engine failures that give them a bad name. It sure must feel good to be in a car that cheap and fun after coming from the 348, despite the overall downgrade. I admit to enjoying my 968 more than the 966TT currently because it's a cheap gokart without worries of a 5 figure repair if something goes wrong.

Yeah, I've seen some that have taken serious hits but never one with bad intrusion into the occupant tub itself. Salvage prices have actually been going up for them since aftermarket clamshells became available. When you could only get one by paying Lotus 11k even entirely superficial wrecks were selling for under 15k.

It's nothing to write home about, but here you go: Pretty dirty -- none of the white you seen is scratches or chips. Spot the missing part: I've never seen a tighter wheel-caliper clearance: Holed up in Staunton, VA with half the mileage done. No issues so far, with the exception of me constantly confusing all the stalks: cruise and wipers, high beams and HUD display mode.

More thoughts: - yeah, it is really liberating to not have to dwell on babying the car. I keep mistiming the clutch release, and it doesn't bother me (at least from a mechanical sympathy perspective) - the exhaust is so quiet. It sounds like it's an electric car with a tiny speaker mounted in the back playing those fake engine noises - 70mph means 84 in NC, and 71 in VA.

kimbo305 posted:- 70mph means 84 in NC, and 71 in VA. Both my recent fly-n-drives have been from the North East to south and the speed variances between states was just weird. One minute we're cruising along at 20+ over then cross a state line and everyone locks in at 5 over or less. How is that thing for a long road trip? The M3 had me feeling like an old man with a broken back when I got home, M5 was fairly comfortable other than the last hour. 928 I would have done another 1k miles and been fine. Porsche in general makes pretty decent seats as long as you fit them.

Thank you! I like it. I wonder, are there any real 'gotcha' parts on these cars aside from the IMS? Like if a passenger shuts a door wrong you've just broken a part that's normally found in a 911 and therefore ? I seem to recall the cayman has a couple parts like that. What I'm saying is: I want a nice roadster like such but I worry about ongoing maintenance costs and potential catastrophic failure points like IMS or BMW's GDCS. E: I'm fairly okay at working on my own cars and this would be a second car for Fridays and weekends. I did an engine drop on a 914 around 10 years ago now. Wasn't there at least one Porsche owner who fried the ECU by waxing the car? It created a static buildup that the electronics didn't like or something weird.

kimbo305 posted:More thoughts: I just drove from Charleston back to Philly yesterday, and the drive through VA was hilarious. Half the people are at exactly the speed limit, and the other half was flooring it with complete devil may care attitude about the cops. My plan worked pretty well, I left Charleston at 1:30pm, and got home at midnight, and didn't have any traffic issues around DC at all. I did have to find goddamn unicorn blood of oil for the 335 just south of Richmond. Scheduled oil change is this coming Friday, because OF COURSE it is.

I know a few people did it but it was an early 997 thing. If you polished the front bumper in the right way in the right conditions the static can toast the ecu. The 996 and first gen Boxsters are pretty solid except for the M96 engine things and they share a ton of parts so it's actually fairly easy to repair most stuff on the cheap. Until I got serious about Porsche stuff I never realized how many Porsche-specific resources and specialists there are so prices for parts and service are surprisingly good.

We drove up 81. Trying to avoid DC/Baltimore/Philly and only joining with 95 past NYC, so didn't hit Richmond.NitroSpazzz posted:How is that thing for a long road trip? The 348 was not louder, but all the air leak whistling around the seals was more annoying. You can also hear the "airplane flaps extending for descent" drag from the spoiler raising, though that could be different if the trim piece were in place. Oddly, my upper hamstrings get cramped up pretty quickly in the seat. It hasn't happened in other cars I drive. Could be the tilt of the seat base, which I can't adjust. Suspension is good -- we drove through that short cobblestone stretch of Savannah and it rattled a few links but otherwise compliant. There's a PASM button I have trouble believing that was an option on this car. The overall torque and engine pickup at 3000 (which is 70mph in 6th) is very usable, which was not the case with the 348. Maybe if you were at 4k. But this thing cannot compare to the Z06 on highways. You hit a valley where you think you're out of radar and you can go from 70 to 95 instantly. kimbo305 fucked around with this message at 16:51 on Mar 5, 2017 |
