CaptainRightful posted:Do you guys use the "official" FCM card accordion + dry erase milestone cards or something else? Yeah, I got those things. I know a guy IRL who doesn't like the accordion because "it takes too long." He also said he just leaves the cards in a big stack and just digs through it each time he hires, which sounds miserable to me. The accordion doesn't take very long to setup imo, and it plus the marker board makes the game go from needing like the biggest table you've got to fitting comfortably on a small table. You can also have every player actually near the board rather than sitting near the sprawling laid of cards of the milestones and staff etc. If you sleeve the cards though, the marker boards won't fit in the box. The accordion + sleeved cards just BARELY fit in the box. I think I'm going to end up making a foam core insert, and then I'm going to keep the "extra" stuff like the accordion, marker boards, some markers, and poker chips in a cigar box that I just lay next to the game or something. If you really hate games hogging the table, it's worth getting that stuff, if you don't really care about table space it may be more trouble than it's worth.

So I already own Viticulture, Brew Crafters, Glen More, and Dungeon Lords, because my gf likes worker placements and I love them themes. I'm still eyeing up Trickerion and Above & Below though, because magic is neat and also storybooks. Are either of these worth getting considering all the WP games I already have? Do they do anything unique? Also how does the complexity of Trickerion compare to Dungeon Lords, which hardly ever gets played?

It was okay, but very few interesting decisions. Maybe get something a bit different, like keyflower?

I wouldn't rate Above and Below. Laukat's games fall flat for me, mostly - I've only really enjoyed The Ancient World. Heavily thematic WP games that do something interesting and that I would recommend are Archon: Glory and Machination and Ave Roma.

Keyflower is good because I like games where I want to stab at least one person by the end.

You never really feel like you're doing any magic tricks, though, just collecting poo poo and making specific sets of the poo poo you collect.

It is a bit fatty around certain aspects (specifically the unavoidable ap you get at the start while people plan their trick routes and then again when somebody takes a trick you wanted) but the theme is wonderful, the powers and fortunes give nice variety that stop things getting too degenerate and the loving one another over with performances is top class

Both do unique things with workers and are great games to boot! I wouldn't recommend Above and Below. The idea is neat, but the execution is really random and swingy.

In FCM I basically accordion the milestones and have per-color decks for employees. It's a decent tradeoff between table space and accessibility.

Found a guy selling vinhos used but in great shape for 40. Is that a good price? It's considered one of the better euros right? I have a friend who LOVES wine I'd give it to if that's the case.

Deluxe is $80 MSRP for the standard version (i.e. minus the extra KS content, which can be bought separately or is still available for $130 as a bundle) so that would probably not be a bad price. The original is out of print and scalpers are trying to sell it for significantly more than $80 but the reprint is strictly better so it's hard to say.

So as soon as I asked if it was the original or deluxe he told me original and dropped the price to $25 haha. Now I'm on the fence about it.

I don't understand the scam? Isn't the offer $25 for the original edition? Which isn't a great edition, but, still, a decent price?

I think the idea is that the question "is it original or deluxe edition?" either led to huh better look that up oh I have the original which is worth less, so it's original and price down to 25 Or heh someone bit on my overpriced original edition lol buyer beware, motherfucker! Oh wait poo poo they asked which edition it is oh well better come clean I guess. Plausible denial, motherfucker! The "scam" being that you almost bought the original (less valuable) version for a premium price if you hadn't asked first.

Above and Below is cute but not very deep or mechanically interesting, I'd recommend trying before committing. Argent definitely fits what you're looking for. Look into Lancaster maybe, it has a cool WP mechanic where you can upgrade your workers (knights) and put down a higher level knight to kick out your opponent's, or use squires to provide temporary strength to your knights. Last Will is partly worker placement (mainly tableau building though), and has a fun theme in which you are trying to waste all your money as fast as possible.

I went to a day long board gaming event today and fell into the worst trap by the first game. I'm offered to make up the fourth layer for a 4 player game, why not, be social, doesn't look that interesting but who knows. I sit down. The game is Mombasa. Lead player reaches into the box for the rules. Starts reading from page 1. 45 minutes and many rereads and corrections later, the game begins and I want to die. People, don't bring games to a board game event without having read the rules before playing. Not without letting people know before you start playing, so they can make a hasty escape.

I got to try The Great Zimbabwe this afternoon. The only other Splotter game I've played is FCM, but I liked this much more. I didn't get the feeling that I'd need to play a half dozen games to figure out what a strategy is. It will certainly take me several plays to learn how to best leverage the gods or specialists(?), but I didn't see anything that seemed as impenetrable as how important initial placement is in FCM.

Fat Turkey posted:I went to a day long board gaming event today and fell into the worst trap by the first game. Funny, at a board game con two years ago, I had almost the same experience with Mombasa. Except it had just come out so no one knew the rules. It's fun when it goes snappy with 3-4 experienced players, but yeah, that's an awful thing to do at a game night, and especially with Mombasa, which is a pretty bad game to learn from the rulebook.

I don't understand the mentality of someone who thinks it's ok to pull out a game they don't know and force others to wait while they go through the rulebook. I'd definitely just apologize and leave.
