there's no doubt quist's path is challenging. it's tough for any democrat to win in that state. that said, it's not really rare. for one, they have won 4 straight governor elections. and prior to a trump-inspired wipeout in november, they controlled all but one non-federal statewide office. plus they've got a US Senator. even quist being pretty progressive won't hurt him - schweitzer, of course, is pretty well known as being a singlepayer healthcare advocate who tried to get it passed in his own state.

quist is perfect for montana. he's just a real cool guy who loves his wife and also thinks maybe we should stop killing people so often. he's montana as hell. his opponent, noted new jersey millionaire greg "giant fortune" gianforte, is a failed gubernatorial candidate who tried to buy his way into office by dumping his personal fortune into the race. he's also a batshit insane religious conservative who thinks evolution is fake and that the bible says retirement is bad, so everyone should work until they die.

i hope this is a good race, and that rob quist wins! he's real cool, and good.

There was never really a chance it wasn't a progressive. The two frontrunners were Bernie supporters. One was Amanda Curtis, a State Senator backed by the state party's executive committee. Quist was supported by those from more rural parts of the state, and also former Gov Schweitzer. I guess McCarthy, the third place candidate, pulled some support but he was never really close to winning.

1) the stock market has a boom and bust cycle. contrary to neoliberal and conservative proclamations, the state capitalist markets don't always go up and up and up forever with no bust.
2) it's a way for private interests to extract fees and wealth from a new source of revenue without adding any value

they keep talking about how he was widely syndicated across mass media when he did "what's the matter with kansas". now that he has a similar analysis in "listen, liberal" no one wants him on their shows to tell them why they're losing again because his message is now somehow unpalatable. they just want to keep blaming anything but the democratic party for their historic losses.

it's really hosed up that the media and political parties have successfully framed many debates about taxation around the estate tax or the federal/state income taxes. they almost never account for payroll taxes or all the other forms of taxes (e.g. sales taxes) that americans pay that ends up being regressive overall.
