I can't believe they just blew up the Ark just like that.

Also I'm not sure I like whatever is going on with Raven/Abby and their brain implants. It's a bit silly to think about, and it's even sillier the way Abby is acting.

This season feels like it's going a bit too fast, trying to do all these things it has planned and get everything set up without really dwelling on them or giving them the space they need, and it's lessening a lot of the impact. Also it's really demonstrating up the problem the show sometimes has where established character behaviors and motivations shift for the sake of the plot, even if it doesn't really make sense or fit them.

Hopefully this season can get thins back on track; I really like the show but it's been really rocky lately, and sometimes outright silly (Octavia's horse just being there last episode is still so dumb).

I think I've said this before, but seasons 1 and 2 had the plot serve the characters, while seasons 3 and 4 so far have done the opposite, and it makes all the difference. It seems to me like after season 2 was (rightfully) praised to the high heavens, the writers' room (or more likely, Jason Rothenberg) got lost up their own rear end and started trying to be clever and edgy for their own sake, losing much of what made the show appealing to begin with.

Decent episode but goddam that scene with the PSTD sniper was dumb. The guy didnt had a shot yet when Bellamy and Echo arrived, the king wanst even out of the cave. They could have just immobilized him easily or taken the rifle out of him instead of giving him a long boring speech so he would not pull the trigger at the last second. gently caress those farm station dumbasses always wanting to murder grounders at the worst possible occasions

Also, since a grounder blew up the ark, I fear we might have so more idiots going "we have to kill all grounders!!!1" and then provoking a war with then so Claire has to make another peace deal, repeat ad infinitum

Yeah, Ontario. Now I live five minutes from "The City of Light" and I had a laughing fit when I realized I was looking at the library & city hall. It was made very clear that if there was a single gunshot sound the Grounders would attack. Considering this, trying to immobilize him would have been extremely risky. That was the entire reason behind the "handle with care" approach. It was the logical thing to do.

Makes sense really, both shows filmed in Canada, and both shows cast surprisingly well given what must be somewhat modest budgets.

Terry Chen was around at the start, Luvia Peterson back in the second season, Roger Cross last year, and Richard Harmon, of course.

Is there anyone else major I'm forgetting, or just other minor actors that pop up in everything Canadian?

Deeply disappointing we didn't get some real raw Garza in action though :(

Just started watching SE04, the whole reactors worldwide simultaneous meltdown after the "warranty" expires is ridiculous unfortunately.
Plenty of high tech systems have been functioning perfectly way beyond their designed life.
Also you'd think a nuclear power plant would rather shut down in a controlled fashion instead of melting down.

Yes, this

As a final threat this would have made ALIE a proper villain.
However they rather go with "no real villains, but all just different groups each with their own agenda's for survival".

ALIE really had no evil intentions, she just wanted to "save" everyone so they could live in the City of Light forever.

Quick question, i probably missed this : how active was ALIE before Jaha turned up?
I was under the impression she was mostly dormant until Jaha's escape pod/nuke landed.

Another great plotline would have been that ALIE was the only reason those reactors didn't blow up without any human supervision. Now that ALIE is gone they would blow up soon. (But in the series they already had blown up recently)

We all know those things tend to break like one WEEK after the warranty period is over.

Totally digging the show for all the brutal plot twists and genocides though.
There could also still be some other Ark Stations with survivors... more red shirts for Clarke to sacrifice.

I take it you haven't paid attention to what happened at Fukushima. After the earthquake, the active reactors automatically shut down their sustained fission reactions, but the tsunami that followed destroyed the emergency generators that would have provided power to cool the reactors, resulting in meltdown (even though the reactions were shut down, the fuel rods were still at extremely high temperatures).

Besides, criticizing the show on this plot point is silly, as there's a lot we don't know. Think about it: how come the reactors are melting down now, 97 years after the nuclear war? Who has been keeping their reactions going by regularly supplying the reactors with fuel? Who has been maintaining the power plants? How come they all started melting down at the same time?

The most plausible explanation: these were special power plants that were:

a) designed to withstand nuclear war
b) automated to such extent that they were able to self-regulate their power production levels based on consumption (allowing their fuel reserves to last as long as they did, once everyone died)

But even fully automated systems require maintenance, so it's not exactly implausible for poo poo to start hitting the fan after nearly a century of neglect.

Also also, I would recommend not taking everything said on the show at face value. Becca's explanation may have been "the power plants ran out of warranty, which is why they started melting down" but the reality could easily have been that a bunch of Grounders found their way in and pressed the wrong button.

As far as I know, no one in Skaikru are nuclear scientists, so their layman's explanations will obviously sound really dumb. Even the engineers on the team are unlikely to know how the reactors were designed and how they worked, so they naturally went with Becca's explanation (and she obviously could not have known exactly why the power plants started failing either, considering they are in Europe).

Well, fine, also North Africa. :)

We know North America contains none (or at least not in the immediate vicinity of the show's setting) because they said it would take several months for the radiation to reach them. Also, Luna's crew gets affected first, and they're out on the Atlantic, meaning the radiation wave is coming from the other side of the Atlantic.

The way I understood it is that those reactors had some kind of futuristic passive/walk away safety mechanism that was designed to function for a very specific time only. Engineers and marketing would naturally pick a round and nice number for stuff like this and that's why it's exactly 100 years.

Like, for example, there are modern nuclear reactor designs that include tanks of water that can gravity feed coolant to the core in an emergency situation. But the water tanks are designed to only hold enough water for exactly 60 hours or so and if no human appears by then to put the pumps/power back on, the reactor will go through a meltdown.

The portrayal of meltdowns on this show is very Simpsons-esque, for lack of a better term. Fiction tends to imagine a nuclear meltdown as something akin to Chernobyl, where the plant blows its lid and scatters radiation to the four winds, but modern nuclear power plant designs are such that it's more-or-less impossible for this to happen. Most nuclear power plants are nothing more than glorified steam engines, with the immense heat from radioactive decay boiling a tub of water, converting it to steam, which pushes a turbine to produce electricity. A "meltdown" is just what it sounds like: the systems put in place to contain said immense heat fail and the fuel melts down through the floor of the reactor. This can be damaging to the local ecosystem if it hits the water table, but is unlikely to spread much beyond the area around the reactor.

It's hilarious they came up with such a ludicrous explanation for the ongoing peril in S4, considering they had a perfectly good antagonist in the form of ALIE, who, backed into a corner, could have set off the world's last remaining nukes (because she panicked, or because she didn't think there'd be a need for any more living humans with the City of Light, etc.).
