Back on the subject of the movie, thinking about it, the first scene where Logan meets the head of security is pretty great. It shows him far wolverine has fallen that this guy who knows all about him feels comfortable getting close to him and threatening him. And it also shows how poo poo his legacy is that a guy like that considers himself a fan.

I will admit that I didn't like how they instantly crossed over the border from Mexico to Vegas. Especially because they had shown the border is heavily policed, and they were driving a shot up and scarred limo.

Not Vegas, Oklahoma City! Still very far from the border, though.

I know this. I really do know. The Matrix should have redefined studios relationships with directors and refreshed their willingness to take a chance on an original property. Instead, they just mashed bullet time into everything for at least five years. I can't remember any faux bullet time or ill placed wire work after 2004, but I'm probably wrong.

How strikingly inambitious everything in the movie is, and the structure and the pacing of the story. Aside from the few action scenes, there was almost nothing that couldn't be replicated on television.
This is still kind of a weird complaint, unless you're just articulating poorly, since the exact same thing could be said of, say, 12 Angry Men, or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Also, with TV going the way it is, there's less and less that 'couldn't be replicated on TV' I mean, we got 'The Battle of the Bastards' on TV, and that faux long take is actually a fair bit better than a lot of movie battle scenes.

quote:

Blind Al specifically comes off across as a character written as if they were being introduced in a TV pilot and going to be expanded on later.
Or just a character with a very specific purpose in the film that they didn't want to spend too much time on.
The most striking moment of television-level storytelling is how there is no absolute "low-point" or ultimate trial to the heroic struggle, except in a flashback (the cartoon animals part is the closest thing in the main narrative). It's such a basic thing, which is why it's absence is so glaring. There's no sense of escalation or overcoming obstacles. And it's not that it's a comedy, plenty of comedies have serious struggles and conflicts.
That sounds like it's structured differently, not poorly. After all, it's not like Deadpool has an easy run of it, getting cancer, getting tortured, then deformed, then set on fire, then shot up, then his girlfriend getting kidnapped and discovering there's no way to come back from being deformed. Not to mention that plenty of TV episodes do in fact have absolute low points. In fact, in both serious shows, and flippant ones, there's a habit of ending on those low points.

Ultimately, your 'this is like TV' thing seems about as solid and useful a criticism as 'it's like a video game'

It's a weird movie. Dolph played the role in a way that even Garth Ennis would have approved, as a weird, broken man who can barely keep his motivation straight, but it's also a corny 80s film with kids that need rescuing and an army of ninjas he fights in a skate park.

They did that in X2, but it wasn't R-rated so you didn't really have people like tearing steak-sized chunks out of each other and growing them back or anything gnarly like that.

In its current form, I think that's more aping 300, with it's quite particular use of Speed ramping, but I guess the movement of the camera mirroring the movement of time is a matrix thing, so you're right.

Just on that, it's becoming an annoying thing in comic book movies, which tend to feature unarmed good guys facing off against bad guys with guns, that the henchmen run towards the hero, despite having guns. I mean, it's not like it would have done much against Laura anyway (that kid is going places, I hope) but it would have been good if she was moving from enemy to enemy, rather than them all running into the same two by two metre area.

This film is art, not superhero pornography for man babies who furiously jerk off every time something explodes or they see related lore they recognize from outside of the story. The nerd elements are there, but not in alienating fashion. It drops hints for you piece together about the lore without having to jam it all down your throat. There's this thing movies do when someone is speaking a language that the bulk of the audience doesn't understand, where they put text at the bottom in the language the audience does understand. Keep Logan in the dark, but we'd know, and that would've been funny.

You got the gist of what she was yelling, so no subtitles was perfectly fine.

The only time not having subtitles is 100% unforgivable is when actual foreign text is being shown. Assuming we aren't looking at a purely gibberish, made up thing that just looks like text.

Subtitles probably would've killed the joke in this case. There are other movies where the content of what they're saying in another language is what's funny, but in this case the humor comes from the fact that she's speaking another language and is angry.

The droid abduction scene in Star Wars is a lot funnier when you know what the Jawas are saying, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the movie will be better for dumbing it down for the audience.

I would say subtitles would actually make it much worse. What she says is irrelevant and subs would just be distracting as people would focus on reading pointless words quickly vs. paying attention to Hugh Jackman's face.

Eh, I compartmentalize when it comes to made up languages versus actual ones. It wouldn't mean poo poo to me what a Jawa is saying, because it's inherently gibberish and the actual point of it is being conveyed in a language I understand.

Little girl losing her poo poo to someone who doesn't know what she's saying is funny. Little girl losing her poo poo to someone who doesn't know what she's saying, but you know precisely what she's saying, is funnier.

(only vaguely related, why hasn't the phrase "dumbing down" as a negative gone the way of saying "M$"?)

ruddiger

The Jawas are speaking an actual human language though. It's Zulu.

E: and their conversations have to do with the identity of personhood, as they're abducting runaway slaves. It very much can add context to the scene. There's an interview with Trevor Noah where he talks about watching that scene when he was younger and understanding what their conversation was about.

Now, do you need that explicitly stated for the scene to work? No, so why should it be any different for Logan?

Because it'd be funnier to know what she's saying. Bonus amusement for her angrily pouring her heart out, and because Logan doesn't know the language, his only response is anger that she only just now decided to talk, and nothing about the legitimate grievance she has.

The language barrier, I feel, is better if it isn't translated. If you don't speak Spanish/Esperanto you are inherently approaching the scene from Logan's point of view. However if you do, you are almost by default switched over to Laura's point of view. Since this is Logan's movie, and I'm a dumbfuck monolinguist, it seems appropriate that as an audience member I'm as surprised and confused as Logan is in the scene.

No subs means your confusion mirrors Logan's and your brain puts together 'oh she grew up in Mexico, of loving course' at the same time he does, which you can watch on his face. Subs would draw the eye down to the bottom of the screen so you miss his reaction and don't make the joke any better, IMO. Subs can be jarring if you don't expect them and the impact of that moment (even without knowing what she's saying) is probably the funniest part of the movie, so I wouldn't want to see the timing hosed because of a mental stutter when you switch to reading mode for a moment.

I've been mulling over it since seeing the movie last movie, and I think this might be my favorite superhero movie. I'd have to see it again to be absolutely certain, but everything about this movie just plain appeals to me.

Also, RE: the subtitle discussion. I recently found out that in Saving Private Ryan, when the two soldiers are surrendering at the end of the D-Day scene, and the Americans shoot them, what they're saying is "Don't shoot, I'm Czech, I surrender" or something along those lines. Maybe subtitles would have made it clearer what was happening to the audience. But, I feel like finding out years after seeing that movie, that I had no idea they weren't even German soldiers like the Americans who shot them makes the scene even better in hindsight. I don't understand Spanish, so I do feel like being in the dark like Logan is adds to the scene a bit. Finding out exactly what she was saying does add a bit more to her character I think.
