'99 is very good because it goes down to the wire but it ends in the worst possible way. I think Fontana was the point where CART started to die. This was also the last year for more than 2 chassis and a single tire.

- Hondas were king again, but the Ford had more raw power and the Toyota looked increasingly competitive as the year wore on, and by the end had surpassed Mercedes which struggled with driveability problems.

-Reynards were the most successful again but the Lolas looked good; especially in the hands of Hogan and Castroneves, it's just too bad about the constant reliability issues that blighted the team the whole year. The Swift only worked for Newman-Haas, the Eagle 997 was generally regarded as a failure and spelt the end of AAR in open wheel. AAR also employed a merry-go-round of drivers which really did not help. The Penske PC-27B was a massive disappointment; Little Al looked like he wanted to kill himself as the season wore on, and they actually reverted to being a one car team most of the year with no fixed driver lineup in the sporadically appearing second car. They used a 'Penskized" B99/00 as well, to little effect. Definitely their worst-ever season.

-Firestone monstered Goodyear. Of the Goodyears, only the Walker cars were even remotely competitive (primarily DeFerran's., though Hattori qualified 7th at Houston and Gidley put it in the midfield a few times). It contributed to the other problems that Eagle and Penske were suffering from. They wisely withdrew at year's end.

- Standout drivers: Montoya, Franchitti, Tracy (surprisingly), Papis, Andretti (again and again), Moore, Castroneves, Kanaan, Fernandez

-Honourable Mentions: Moreno, Da Matta, Pruett, Gordon, Hearn

-Dishonourable Mentions: PJ Jones, Shigeaki Hattori

-How does this guy keep getting rides?: Dennis Vitolo

-Journeyman: Gualter Salles (3 teams in one year)

RIP Gonchi and Moore.

When I first read this, I thought they would be bringing back live in-race visor cam. It seems that this is just going to be the new 1080p/60fps visor cam that we've already been seeing from IndyCar during practice segments, just used as a precorded segment during the broadcast. Still, that'll be swell to see on TV.
I love that they refer to this as a new exciting innovation when we were getting TracyCam literally 15 years ago.

They're puffing it up for sure, but nowadays you can get way better picture and sound with less intrusive hardware. The visor cam videos this year have been amazing!

Yeah every St. Pete brings up memories of Dan :rip:

But in a happier note, Susie Wheldon is opening up a boutique in St. Pete this weekend that I plan on checking out

The new project in Susie Wheldon’s life is full of black and white but not as many checkers as some of her others.

Wheldon is opening Verve, a boutique in the hip, growing Edge District in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. There’s a casual cool about her new space, much like Wheldon herself. Male and female shoppers can pick up fashionable, casual pieces. Her “elevated streetwear” looks include premium denim, high-end T-shirts as well as skirts, dresses and accessories in mainly black, white and grays. None of racing’s checkered flags, though. Not so far.

Yep. Once he showed that CART teams could moonwalk all over IRL regulars it was just a matter of time before everyone switched over

i mean the discussion of "reunification" had been on the table for quite sometime, and guys like RP, The Andretti's, etc were likely sick of not being able to run the "500". (as were their sponsors...)

Marlboro itself pretty much told RP "Go run Indy. We get no value out of CART that we already don't get from Ferrari or Schumi. We need you at Indy for the :911: audience to give a drat"

also, perhaps it is indeed Audi coming to the series? Went thought a few articles and it always feels like V.A.G. and Indy seem "linked" in joining AOWR dating back to the old ChampCar days.

So Audi-Cosworth perhaps? I mean they left WEC and perhaps this is their next "hill to climb" so to speak. My only doubts is the whole "Diesel powered" thing.

Audi is in kind of a weird spot after it pulled out of the WEC. They want to get out of works racing, but then they blast commercials about its racing heritage and then flirt with going Formula 1? If it pulled out of sportscar racing to double-down on domestic markets, like the United States, then maybe they'd be in the market for Indycar. If the pulled out of sportscar racing to go to F1 instead, why would they need Indycar?

Strange.

Considering how much has changed at Audi and VAG, especially at board management, it doesn't make much sense to build the theory through multiple-years-old stories and rumors.

Formula E is pennies, they're in DTM because it's a big game of chicken between the German makes, and their GT3 efforts are simple and make them money. IndyCar would have to be from somebody at Audi USA really wanting to do that, and I can't see that happening at this time.

Gotta be Alfa then.

I don't know, just every time this topic has come up? It always see to come down to V.A.G. or FCA being the major players.
