I bought the Sunex 15 piece sets from amazon for ~$40 each when I ordered the impact, if you'd rather not have HF (not that they're bad!).

Seconding getting a cordless one, I bought the Makita 18v unit last year and I've never had to swap it the 3 amp hour batteries while using it. It's a thousand times more hassle free than running cords or getting a two stroke for my dinky yard. Also, re impact sockets, craftsman has a fairly complete set that's pretty cheap as well that I picked up last year and like a lot, though the hf sockets honestly are pretty good too. Those are what I had been using for years now without any issues, other than the lack of a carrying case. Then again, one of those companies won't be around in nine months time.

I've got HF impacts as well. I have the Chromoly (vs. Chrome Vanadium, they sell both) ones and would recommend.

I'm not, I'm just tired of batteries wearing out, not to mention the additional weight they entail. And this is something that'd be getting used just once in a while, like one or two days out of a year, a situation in which corded tends to shine.

Yeah just go pick up a black and Decker for 40 bucks and be done with it.

That's about the first time I've even seen those things go on sale. I also added a Wiha screwdriver magnetizer for a few bucks. Shipping isn't bad either, around five bucks, and that was mostly covered by 10% off with the Thanks2GJ garage journal coupon code.

Over a decade ago I bought a cheap b&q powerplus circular saw. I've used it without sympathy or mercy until last year when I dropped it and bent the baseplate fifteen ways. I replaced it with a scheppach track saw which is quieter and awesome but yesterday I stripped down the old one to see what state it's in inside. Apart from needing new grease 5 years ago it's in brilliant shape inside so like a dumb hoarder I'm going to keep the motor and gearbox. If I hadn't dropped it I'd probably have got another ten years out of it.

My little 7" diameter circular saw isn't doing the job when it comes to cutting 4x4s, anyone got any suggestions for something a little bigger (circular saw or otherwise) I could pick up to handle the job? Cheaper is better

I bought a "generic" skilsaw from a pawn shop for $20 a few years ago. It's a namebrand Skil, just not special.

Cheaper is better If you don't need it to be super portable, you might want to invest in a miter saw. A 10" miter will easily slice through 4x4s at 90 degrees, and give you a more accurate cut than a circular saw. Being able to do accurate angle cuts is very useful for other carpentry as well. Amazon has a well-liked 10" Hitachi for $109.

Ooooh perfect, I've really been wanting a miter saw. Portability is only a concern for one place, but I can throw it in my car, drive to the site, and set it up.

If I want a drill press, am I better buying a new one or finding one on Craigslist? I feel like the Craigslist finds have a better chance of being well-built and high-quality, but I don't know enough about drill presses to know what I'm looking at. I don't have any specific requirements, which I know isn't helpful.

Not really a lot to go wrong on a drill press... Make sure the quill isn't loose/wobbly. Run it and make sure it doesn't wobble or run the drill bit off centre. Check the belt for fraying or cracking... Or loose parts in general. The pulleys should be tight, etc Not sure there's much else to it I was annoyed by my bench top one's inability to lower the table very far. Think about possible uses and how long the drill bits can be and how big and thick the pieces of wood you plan to work on might be. Also you want it to be able to go slow if you plan to drill metal I guess.
