I don't disagree with the "I don't give a gently caress where people go to the bathroom" approach, but is it the setup I mentioned really that inefficient? The usual bathroom arrangement around here has dividing walls between the men's and women's rooms anyway, you could basically just truncate that dividing line into a sink wall and lose zero stall space. Admittedly I am not an engineer and am influenced by my radical "abolish gendered bathrooms" position, but still, I don't see it.

To save on materials, a lot of stall door/walls only go down to shin height. Due to poor build quality, there's usually an inch gap between the panels as well.

You don't get it; criminal respect every "no X allowed" signs except "no guns allowed". That's why you can declare a bathroom to be an "assigned male-free zone" and not have this be ridiculous and stupid like the puny Liberals' "gun-free zones".

They really aren't "incredibly inefficient". The office I'm in has both gendered washrooms (inherited from the building's previous tenants) and genderless ones (added when we renovated the building before moving in), and the former are maybe 80% of the size per toilet of the latter once you take into account the dividing walls and poo poo. We currently have 5 of each (per floor) and we could replace that with 12 genderless washrooms, and that's using a really simplistic "let's just copy-paste the existing washrooms over here" metric rather than, e.g., making the existing connecting hall open into washrooms on both sides rather than adding a second hall with its own set of washrooms. If you're designing for it from the ground up you can get ~90% as many actual toilets into the same space even without using communal sinks.
