Witcher 3 was a fantastic game. Probably one the best RPGs in a long time. It does scratch a different itch than the Mass Effect games though.

I'm not sure I agree with the severity of the ME3 Backlash, but Bioware literally just poo poo on the fans of the series with that ending. If you watch the actual original endings and were privy to the literal promises and assurances of the Bioware devs that it was actually NOT going to be what they really did, it was a huge slap in the face, both of the time invested by the fans as well as an ending to the trilogy. I really think Bioware deserved to get called out for the poo poo they pulled, and though I think it went too far, I'm not sorry it happened.

Anything involving the witches in Velen or the witch-hunts is pretty gruesome, though. That was the first time I ever experienced such an explosion of outrage over something like a game before. It really caught me off guard. I liked most of the game, had fun playing it and thought the ending was lame but moved on. Like someone posted a while back the response far outweighed the "crime".
