I don't really have any particularly amusing "playing music not designed specifically for the game" stories, beyond loading up Quake with the wrong CD back in the day and getting the soundtrack to sample The Games Factory game "Magician's Lair"

I did this, but I had 3D Lemmings in the drive. I think it wound up with the first level being circus music, and the between-level music was the Lemmings sci-fi level music.

I just remember the end-of-episode music being ML's title screen music.

Which, looking back on the actual Quake soundtrack, and which track is track 2, is about right, yeah.

It is impossible to listen to Smashing Pumpkins now without thinking of Quake 1 / Quake 2. Always had those playing in the background, specifically Mellon Collie and Siamese Dream.

I used to listen to NIN while playing something but I can't remember what [ironically, it wasn't Quake. :v:]

Another interesting quirk with Quake 1 is that I've had copies where the last two tracks are in a different order.

I can't remember anything other than my stupid kid self listening to actual Bond theme songs while playing Nightfire PC online. The 80s - 90s ones worked the best for this so a lot of Living Daylights, A View to a Kill and The World is not Enough, punctuated with the Goldeneye remix of the Bond Theme and the crap remix for Die Another Day.

Nowadays I usually listen to the game music but I could some good upbeat electronica/techno/EDM/whatever they're calling it now for Bombastic as the one awful track in the trial mode is beginning to wear thin.

I don't think I've ever listened to other music in lieu of game music but I also didn't really know what genre of music I liked outside of "game soundtracks" until like a few years ago so I'm clearly weird in other ways.

Yeah most of my "music over games" stuff comes from playing things online, particularly during the Quake III/UT99 days. We had a stupid clan of local guys (the Krispy Krunchy Klan, hilarious) and somebody set up some kind of primitive music streaming server that you plugged into winamp and we'd throw all kinds of weird poo poo on there, lots of tacky EBM and industrial and stuff like MSI and The O because well it was the late 90's and we were playing FPS games. We used to set up teleconferences with landline phones and headsets and stuff, like primitive teamspeak or whatever people use now

e: did anyone else play that Nerf FPS?

I got the 2nd N Strike game cheap with the Gun. Oh. I have neither Nerf game for the Wii but I have the red sight gun I use to play FUNNEST GUN GAME EVER House of the Dead Overkill where my gun basically sits in my lap like it's the codpiece gun Tom Savini had in From Dusk Till Dawn. That's pretty much the only correct way to use HDTV type cursor light guns. Sprawl out in a chair, generally a recliner type or an office chair if you can manage to not recline back so much it falls over, and shoot from the groin.

Yes you will not be as cool as Tom Savini (in fact the ENTIRE Games subforum of posters combined cannot be as cool Savini. We should all come to terms with this) but you might at least feel a little cool. It doesn't work as well with the PS Move and Gun Rifle thing tho. (And now thanks to PSVR the Bubble Dildo bits are back up to like 35 used when they were around 15-20. Still cheaper than Switch controls.)

It doesn't exactly make up for being inferior to Guncon 1 or 2 but... They don't have HOTD Overkill which is awesome. (And the Tastes Like Chicken song owns. Not as good a soundtrack as Sega CD Terminator but HOTD O has a drat solid group of music for getting grind housey with if you aren't listening to outside audio sources. I'd put that tune up with Red Alert's HELL MARCH as something I am happy to listen to outside of the game. Also the first half of said Terminator game. And Raiden 2. And the opening and level 1 song in SCD Silpheed. Like Silpheed's intro music is maybe up there with the opening credits music in FF6 in just getting you SET for the game you are about to play.)

Hm, until recently I've always kept gaming and music separate. I can't really do both at once except things like Audiosurf (and only the simpler, easier modes) and playing WoW with my playlist on shuffle. I'd prefer to just sit there and listen. If I'm doing anything else my brain misses portions of it, if that makes sense. That definitely includes the mid-90s. I was trying to be one of the cool kids, getting heavily into music and pretty much didn't play games at all, learning to play guitar instead.

Yeah, I mean WoW has always had great music, but it only plays every 15 minutes or something unless you loop it, then it gets kinda tiresome because of the kind of game it is. So having your own music on instead works pretty well. I just wish I could hear it when I'm focusing on the game.

Ride the Lightning is a great album.

e: Also vanilla WoW was 2004 - 2006. Probably could be considered retro. That's weird to think about.

This was pretty good except not enough 70s synth for me: I'm still back at the run of the mill poo poo like Asia and Greenslade. It's the goofy album covers that sucked me into it recently.

Semi related, I got a better appreciation for the Beatles by playing Beatles Rockband. It's made going back to other Guitar Heroes and Rockbands very difficult as some of the songs in those games don't really do much musically. And now I can be a smug hipster prick by saying I like Octopus's Garden and Helter Skelter.

Hey, so like are you literally me? Because I've always been weird like this too. I have fond memories of leaving Mega Man 3 idle in Spark Man's stage just so I could listen to the music as a kid. And when Napster first became a thing, I immediately started slowly downloading Chrono Trigger's OST track by track.

My music collection is still roughly 90% game soundtracks, which always leads to a fun conversation when someone asks what you're listening to and you have Nier's unique vocals blasting in your ear. :v:

I've found that non-English speaking countries used woodwinds in lieu of synth and organs in their prog. It goes from Uematsu Final Fantasy to Sugiyama having a stroke.

Is it wrong I'd rather most SNES sample music get turned into proper chip tunes instead? Sample game music more feels uncanny valley these days. (This also includes the Amiga in the UV.) Not properly chippy OR red book audio. FM synth? SID chip? POKEY? That is extremely my poo poo. Hell, even the NES had some rockin chippage going on with Dragon Quests and Ninja Gaidens and of course Castlevanias and Contra. Metroid was legit even without FDD track. Same with CV3 and it's loss in the West.

Because that's clearly programmed video game music. SNES is always on the cusp of sounding natural but the early compositions are like an awkward half step as if someone composed Mozart using Fruity Loops default samples.
