i'm not gonna dismiss the idea out of hand but i do hear 'the alt-right are changing the world with their advanced meme warfare' claimed far more often than i see it demonstrated trump won on the basis of aging whites who don't know what a 'meme' is, and the far right is gaining traction because of the incompetence and cruelty of the contemporary centre. null hypothesis about cartoon frogs is surely that they're just the contingent manifestation of the politics produced by these forces.

Post election, pretty much any time someone from the alt-right gets too close to popular culture, popular culture rears back like it was burned and someone hops out to literally or figuratively clobber them back into obscurity, which (for now) contradicts the idea that they're winning any kind of culture war worth waging. The DNC did more to get Trump elected than fashy dweebs. The real problem is Trump listens to & surrounds himself with different, more successful, fashy dweebs and- at least a portion of the time- when his lovely old man brain gets bored and decides it's time to pivot, one of them is there to feed him their ideas.
