That's why I said she was one of the catalysts. You could say the same thing about bernie and the upsurge of economic leftism.

Sure someone could've come around, but it could've been much later and not because of McCain.

i think russia is a thing but they need to keep that question burning so that the next weird russia thing that drops makes trump look worse. by going all in, if something actually drops, it probably won't matter, but if the russia thing is in the back of everyones heads and then it turns out oh trump talked to putin irl in a secret hallway or something, you actually have a big story break. if you just keep the same tone/story throughout the next 2 years, no ones gonna give a poo poo.

the emails thing was a problem because no one had talked about the emails for like a loving month and then bam it consumed the news cycle.

right now democrats shoul dbe fighting on healthcare while they behind the scenes look into the russia poo poo so they can pin it on trump with some additional evidence. instead they're like "oh yeah we need to tweak the thing that will kill literally thousands of people so it just kills thousands of people still, but its not as expensive!!" instead of like standing up for poo poo.

This came up during the dark days of the primaries; it's impossible to actually dig up dirt on Bernie. This isn't supposed to be possible for a politician. The closest to dirt he has is that he has some granola hippy freedom of choice opinions on nuclear power/alt medicine, and one time he wrote an article about sexual fantasies with the word "rape" contained within. That Is It.

It's really hard to figure out why some armchair communists are so cheesed that such a unique social democrat has resurrected the word Socialism.

I distinctly remember people on SA hand-wringing about how hosed-up it was that supposed "socialist" Bernie was buying a house even though he already had two (one in Vermont and one in DC, because he is a senator and needs them) (the Clintons also own three homes and Trump owns dozens)

He's either saying that Democrats stopped being Democrats because they are racist against Obama or was quoting that argument sarcastically, I can't tell.

Anecdotally I personally identified as a Democrat in 2008 because I liked Obama at the time and now I do not.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/inside-the-horror-show-that-is-congress-20050825

just finished reading this

in retrospect, the accusation that bernie never did anything with all his time in congress is wrongheaded. reid blocking one of bernie's amendment to serve corporate interests was really hosed up:

quote:

As for the Ex-Im amendment, the Sanders gambit against it perishes on that Tuesday afternoon, July 19th, as the Senate wallops the Coburn version of the amendment, 62--37. According to Gunnels, the key vote ends up being cast by Democrat Harry Reid of Nevada.

"It was still close, around 24--23 or so, before Reid voted," he says. "It looked like a lot of Democrats were waiting to see which way he would go, him being the minority leader and all. As soon as he voted no, a whole slew of Democrats followed him, and the amendment was dead."

Reid's predecessor as minority leader, Tom Daschle, was a marionette of the banking and credit-card industries whose public persona recalled a hopped-up suburban vacuum-cleaner salesman. In the wake of the Daschle experiment, Reid is the perfect inheritor of the Democratic leadership mantle: a dour, pro-life Mormon with a campaign chest full of casino money. Trying to figure out his motives on this vote proved no less difficult than figuring out what the Democratic Party stands for in general.

When I call Reid's office, spokesman Jim Manley initially refuses to offer an explanation for the senator's vote. He seems weirdly defensive about the issue, and we go back and forth on the matter for a while before he finally reads a statement explaining – or purporting to, anyway – his boss's vote on the China loan.

"As with questions raised about other transactions involving China, legitimate concerns are at issue," he reads. "But rather than Congress intervening in one transaction after another, what we really need is a coherent and comprehensive policy to address the emergence of China as an economic threat. This administration has failed to develop a China policy... and this utter failure has fueled congressional and public unease.... Got that?"

"Um," I say, copying it down. "Sure. Wait – if the problem is that there's no comprehensive policy for China, why give them $5 billion to build nuclear plants? Why not give them, say, nothing at all?"

Silence on the other end of the line. Finally, Manley speaks.

"This administration has failed to develop a China policy," he repeats coldly. "And this utter failure has fueled congressional and public unease..."
