I didn't get paid for eight months in 2000 because the whole dot com thing collapsed, so it was a question of waiting for checks to clear and reading fuckedcompany.com. Amazon was fricking amazing. Everyone else got hit for a return on the VC money (The Simpsons episode where Bart is offered stock from a roll is weirdly true), but they seemed to survive every round and didn't make a profit for a _decade_.

After marketplace, AWS seemed like a very logical move and since then; well, entire companies are moving their infrastructure into AWS because it removes the datacenter from the equation.

Datacenters are a big deal. Modern ones are elevated floor, multiple redundancy systems that suck up power, and frequently have their own high-voltage plant, double backup generators. Fiber and copper terminal points, and they usually have twinned AC units, not to mention a halon dump system.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fyGGqgVzCY - Accidental halon dump. You don't get to hear the alarms going off, but halon would asphyxiate anyone in the room so it's hella loud.

A datacenter generally accounts for tens of millions of dollars a year, and companies try to maintain occupancy by offering colo services. After AWS, this got harder, so a bunch of people have thrown in the towel.

So my point is that they're not just grabbing retail, they've doing a magnificent job of cornering data. Only really matched by Google's disruption of email and 'Office' services.

Is it possible to encase the entire CIG office in a halon suppression system and then activate it ?

Once the people are outside of course

Amazon becoming SC's publisher is really good for the project in terms of actually getting the thing out of the door. Amazon have hired some real experienced talent from big games studios across the world, if anyone is able to turn the project around it'll be them.

It also fits their current business plan to break into the PC gaming market with a battering ram, releasing a large of high budget games in a short period of time.

If this is true, I imagine they have enough influence over the project to get Roberts to gently caress off which means we'll be seeing an MVP for certain. Could be interesting, really looking forward to seeing the list of features that'll be getting cut.

Now when the game bombs, the true believers will have Amazon to blame and Roberts can swindle his way into another crowdfunded project.

In a way I believe that Amazon is dumb enough to throw money at this. I mean how much did they waste developing their phone? And they slashed the price of it to practically nothing after barely any time at all because no one wanted it.

Amazon/Google/Facebook scale datacenters are way, way, way, way bigger than what you're describing. There are more like "dozens" of everything instead of "double". Commercial colocation facilities aren't that much smaller these days (excluding the ones in urban cores, in highrises).

Also, it's been a long time since I've seen a halon system, because no one could hold their breath long enough to get out of a modern datacenter. Halon was a thing in the IBM Big Iron/dataroom era, where you could hear the alarm, take a deep breath (you've got five seconds to discharge) and run to the door.

Maybe it's controversial, but I don't think the game will bomb (assuming the Amazon publisher info is correct).

There are two things the game needs in order to bring it out of its current tail spin - proper scope control and stable reliable funding. Amazon can provide both and it sounds like they're taking control of the project in exchange for all the resources and funding they're putting in.

They honestly could redirect the project into an actual viable game. I'd love to know what's going to happen to CR in that event since he'll basically lose control of the project entirely in order to get it out the door. Freelancer all over again.

I'd argue that it's going to bomb because everyone that still gives a poo poo already owns it and everyone else's patience has run out and laughs it. Look at any comment section outside of r/sc when something is written about star citizen. It's duke nukem forever and daikatana all over again now, it's also why I don't believe the amazon poo poo for a second. Even an hour of research would have turned this up.

Star Citizen is a space trading and combat simulation video game developed by Cloud Imperium Games and published by Amazon Game Studios. It is a spiritual sequel to Wing Commander, a combat flight simulator released in 1990. The game was initially announced by Chris Roberts in 2013, and following many production schedule mishaps and a buyout of CIG by Amazon, it was eventually released in March 2023.

In the game, players take on the roles of spacecraft pilots. These characters fly single-seater ships, exploring the planets and space stations of 7 known star systems. They also engage in dogfights with other pilots (player- and computer-controlled) to protect traders or engage in piracy themselves. Other player activities include bounty-hunting and commodity trading. The single-player mode puts the player in the role of Johnny Bland, who goes through a series of missions to save the Sirius sector from a mysterious alien force. In multiplayer mode, players are free to take on any role and to explore anywhere from the start.

Originally, Roberts promised features such as automated flight maneuvers, dynamic economies, and a multiplayer mode that could host thousands of players, but diminished versions of these features were implemented in the final release. The game's initial technical demos impressed reviewers, but after the Amazon buyout and Roberts' departure from CIG, critics had doubts about the game. Reviewers judged the final product technically good but failing to fulfill their initial expectations.

heh yeah, though I find it VERY HARD to believe, I wrote up my thoughts on this.
