More Night in the Woods ending discussion, beware:

I mean, yeah, except in this world there is both capitalism AND a cosmic horror representing capitalism, it's like the end of Final Fantasy IX when an impromptu thematically-appropriate symbol made flesh jumps down from the rafters to talk to the protagonists.

I'll be honest, I haven't thought much about the ending since a friend and I played it two or three weeks ago, but I did feel and still feel that there are a lot of better ways of tying up the story that doesn't involve cthulhus. Personally I would've kept the game grounded in reality, the problems plaguing the town and it's people are scary enough because they're relatable as gently caress

Again, it's a fine game and I probably would recommend it to people who liked Undertale or walking simulators in general

it is both a monkey and a boombox
Assassin's Creed 1 was kinda lame but felt SUPER unique and promising at the time. Then Assassin's Creed 2 dropped and it felt like a loving miracle. I maintain that Assassin's Creed 2 is the single most impressive example of really delivering on the potential of a series.

Ever since then it's been on a steady decline (with the exception of Black Flag which was a lot of fun). I still have a place in my heart for the series, and hopefully they can turn it into something entertaining again.

Yoko Taro definitely hates me, personally. I started Nier2, spent an hour in the first mission wondering "Am I gonna get a chance to save, like, ever?", got one-shotted by the boss, went to pick "Continue" on the main menu and it won't let me until it finishes downloading the extra data, and I thought the game doesn't autosave anyway? Do I really have to do that whole mission in one take? God drat it, Yoko Taro.

Yeah I love when Vats becomes irreparably broken and I have to reload a 20 hour old save. Or when a quest giving NPC spawns 30 feet above the ground and dies and I don't notice until the last act of the game.

yes but if you run in on normal or easy and then bump up the difficulty when you get to the first save point you don't have to deal with it anymore

Yes, I played through that bit on normal because I didn't want to repeat it. It shouldn't take an hour on your next attempt though

Who is getting Nier on Steam this Friday? Please LMK if it runs well on your system since I'm deciding between to get it on PC or PS4.

gently caress, I guess if I don't get a PS4 copy by Friday I might just get it on PC, that's really tempting. Metal Gear Rising on PC looked and played pretty drat smoothly. Playing Nier at 1440p / 60fps seems like it would be pretty swank

I have no reason to doubt that it'll be a good port. All of Platinum's PC ports thus far have been, but being cautious is still a good idea.

it hitches in the open world as different parts load on ps4 but its smooth in the mission areas and bosses. pc might iron out the issues

really, you'd think that internet hype culture would embolden more studios to greenlight cult classic series games cause you've got a couple thousand people pumping your game up 24/7 for months for free so when it comes out people have heard about it and reviewers feel like they have to play it and then it gets good scores and its a hit idk.

You still have to have people who want to work on those games and then sell the concept to the people who can fund it. Not every cult classic has a studio champion these days. On top of that, a lot of the people who have worked on them have moved on.

You know, it would be really cool if the games industry as a whole just agreed to not use Lovecraft for a few years, just to let it cool off. The last time a game actually surprised me with it was Deadly Premonition and even then that was mostly just Swery doing his own thing with it, now so many people use it as a crutch to lend stakes to small personal stories or to have some crazy setpieces in the final act that I'm actually more surprised when a game doesn't end with you having to stop monsters from another plane of of existence from coming into ours.

If you're gonna have a serious conversation in the game, I dunno if that guy is the voice you wanna go with

Kumail is a funny guy but he's not a particularly great actor and his nasal, lisping voice combined with his accent is so distinctive that it immediately takes me out of the moment when he voices a character because he can't not sound and act like Kumail. He was in Walking Dead Season 2 and it had that same problem, his character is involved in what is supposed to be a relatively serious stakes-setting scene but it doesn't work at all.

However an exception will be made for any potential Kirby games that come out during the cool-down period to feature reality warping horrors.

I said Lovecraft, not supernatural themes in general.

Deadly Premonition is overly supernatural from the first minute of the game but for most of the game it's in a way that never goes beyond generic zombies and haunted house antics and kept relatively ambiguous as to whether or not it's metaphorical or literal or having any sort of far-reaching implications since it only ever happens when you're by yourself and nobody else sees or acknowledges it. Later in the game they even give what looks like a logical explanation for it with the story of the rain making the fear gas from the old government experiments leak out and make you hallucinate/become violent. Then at then end they confirm that not only is all of this totally real but there's an entire other level of conflict going on that you've been swept up in and you go from having mowing down the same handful of zombies in abandoned buildings to to having crazy duels with giant lighting oni and shooting flying frogmen in neverending MC Escher tunnels and everything is crazy and great and totally earned.

i'm not familiar with the actor but honestly i don't think the problem with the stuff in the walking dead s2 was him as much as that the walking dead s2 was just kind of bad in general, as a va he seemed fine and fit his character decently well

he's definitely kind of awkward in me:a but i think that comes down the voice direction and pacing in that scene, being kind of awful
