It's even more stupid - if they had spent all of five seconds on google they would have discovered that Austin has 4+ other TNCs operating here that are just as functional as Uber/Lyft.

My basic assumption is that the types of technolibertarians that show up for SXSW would happily shill for Uber due to the brand while ignoring actual smaller companies because it doesn't fit their mental model.

The worst smelling cab/ride I've ever gotten was from an Uber in Denver. On that same trip, another Uber driver tried to scam my friends and I into investing in his "new super valuable" crypto currency.

They pretty much stripped what little evidence there was off the internet when the petition failed, but the shell group they used was the "Democracy Project for Texas".

here is a reddit thread discussing it and here is the ordinance they wanted passed.. The juicy bit allowing LED billboards to replace any existing billboards is at the end but I also found it amusing that they couldn't resist putting in a new height restriction allowing billboards to be 42ft over the highest lane of travel instead of over ground level.

Surge pricing doesn't last all day. I understand y'all hate Uber's business practices but Texas cities have poo poo public transportation and Uber was a godsend for me while travelling for work. I like having one app that works nationwide and I'm not going to try new services that are the flavor of the day for a specific city. I'm working a conference in Houston for food bankers from around the world and a good majority of them will catch Ubers from their hotel to explore the city. That really wasn't an option 5 years ago when I first started working this conference, hell I remember one of them telling me the horror story of them attempting to get around with the Houston metro.

Well that and running such a constant, obnoxious series of shady ads that people were motivated to vote against them just to make them shut up.

Seriously though, no one made Uber and Lyft leave, we've got multiple local ridesharing companies that pay their drivers better to fill the void. And I can tell you that Uber didn't totally leave: Uber Eats is still here and doing strong.

Yeah nothing you said makes any sense. When I am DC next week I will use DC Metro along with Uber. Either way it's not all rich tech bros using Uber. I don't know the specifics but why did Uber bail from Austin and not Houston? They worked out a solution with the city of Houston and I am curious why it didn't work out that way in Austin

The non rich tech bros would also know to use the other ride sharing apps that we have here. As for why it didn't work that way in Austin they were hoping to hold us up as an example to others and basically trade on the hip and trendy Austin brand. It's why they're all complaining about how we're no longer the tech capital of the state or whatever.

Looks like Uber didn't want to miss the Super Bowl and Houston, in exchange, cut down on licensing costs. Also eliminated drug tests.

Kept the fingerprint check though. Which is odd because isn't that what provoked Uber into pulling out of Austin? Whatever.

In any case, the fact that other companies filled the void left by Uber/Lyft says a lot about how "burdensome" the regulations really are.

Because Houston is a massive city with a much bigger population than Austin (especially when you include unincorporated Houston), that gets a massive amount domistic and international traffic from across the global. We safely generate enough business to were they can't ignore us and we can still tell them they can go gently caress themselves. They tried pulling the same poo poo and it didn't work.

I'm pointing out that traveling to another city has always required finding out about and using the services available there. Refusing to do so (by refusing to use local apps) is just plain dumb.

Unwilling to transform local jails into ICE holding tanks, Hernandez's bold, yet completely constitutional, move elicited dispropriate rebuke from GOP Gov. Greg Abbott, who has since made attacking so-called "sanctuary cities" a legislative priority. In clear political payback, the governor pulled $1.5 million in Criminal Justice Division grants from the county, citing its support for "sanctuary policies." Abbott's move stripped crucial programs of secure funding, including drug diversion, family violence prosecution and outreach, veterans' court, and victim services – and it disproportionately punished abused mothers, children, veterans, and families. But Travis County has refused to take the reprisal lying down: Local state Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, D-Austin, started a crowdfunding site to recoup the loss; the campaign has netted more than $135,000 from the community so far, highlighting the strength and dedication of county residents.

So the party of family values wants to destroy families and it's up to all the good people to save them.

I live in Fort Worth, I have no idea if this kind of poo poo is going on here. This sanctuary cities thing is rather heartening and I want to see if there's anything local I can do.

Piece of poo poo Steve Stockman is facing criminal charges now

Former U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman, R-Texas, has been charged with violating federal election law.

Stockman conspired with former congressional employees to funnel money intended for a charity to his campaign, according to a sworn statement from an FBI agent unsealed Thursday. He is also accused of making false statements to the Federal Election Commission.

The allegations center on a $350,000 donation Stockman solicited from an unnamed businessman shortly after taking office in 2013, according to the statement. The money was supposed to go to a Las Vegas-based nonprofit called Life Without Limits, but Stockman instead "secretly diverted the funds to pay for a variety of personal expenses and to fund illegal contributions to Stockman's campaigns for public office," the statement said.
