Weird possible bug thing? I just now noticed that I'm no longer actually getting any of the chips that the game is telling me I should be getting for reclaiming corpses. I noticed I didnt get either of the Shockwave +4 chips I saw that I want because Shockwave is really good, and I was suspecting it might be some sort of item limit the game wasnt telling me about so I sold a shitload of chips I didn't want, but I just now got TWO Melee Attack +7 chips off of the same course and now neither of them are in my inventory, which I am upset about.

Is it possibly related to the fact that (3rd playthrough spoilers) I'm playing as A2 in Route C

Is there any bonus to taunting other than killing things faster (like better drop rates or something)?

How does the counter chip work? "Move towards the enemy as they attack" isn't quite enough detail for me

E: ^^^ I thought the corpses just gave the bonuses of the chips, they don't give you the actual chips themselves

It's an MGR Parry. You need to press forward on the left-stick, towards the enemy, just as the attack is about to land.

Specifically, it's Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa from Bayonetta, 'cos the timing is a bit more strict than Rising's parry counter and it doesn't require light attack to be input to work.

This game is so far really cool. It gives me huge dark souls vibes. Starting it off with a bullet hell galaga thing was like awesome.

I do have one little problem, which is that my game plays in slow motion. The cut scenes play at normal speed, but playing the game it's like everything is running through molasses.

If you're playing on something with integrated graphics make sure to force your computer to use your graphics card instead. Otherwise it might just be that your computer isn't very good, like mine. I get some pretty bad slowdown, especially in the city ruins, but get decent framerates in most places.

Try windowed mode and see if it persists.
It sounds like the issue I had with Metal Gear Rising on PC, where it was tying frame-rate to an unnaturally low TV refresh rate which made the game speed feel like ~40% of what it should have been. (24hz so 24fps)
If it's not the same in windowed mode, consider using a borderless windowed tool.
If it's not that, it's possible that your PC just isn't good enough.

Cutscenes are fine because they're videos.

It's neat that it's there, but it's totally unnecessary and redundant with all of the other options they give you, at least for the number of slots it takes to make the Counters worth it. You're better off just throwing a good Taunt chip in instead.

Josuke Higashikata

It's a fun option to have and gives you the same launchers a perfect dodge does.
I'm probably a bit unique in that I don't like to be overpowered, so I keep a +0 diamond chip included in my set so I can use it to play around without my counters reflecting a metric tonne of damage.

I don't play with Taunts or Attack Up for the "I don't want things to melt" reason too.

Random Q: That locked chest in the Flooded City that you need to make the long jump to get to (under the regular chest with the Type 3 spear in it)... how the gently caress do you get there? I'd hijack that snake but it's patrol is over the water and as soon as you grab it out nosedives into the water and dies.

run, jump, jump again, hit shoot + jump at the same time to have your pod throw you forward, air dash, hold the jump button to float forward and grab the ledge

Josuke Higashikata
Mar 7, 2013

You can do it with that snake, but it's still easily possible with a running double jump, pod dash and then a combination of light attacks or a slow fall with the pod. Only bother doing it with 9S, because like you say, there's a locked chest there out of view along with the one you can see from afar.

I told you so...
Oh, one thing I wanted to ask/discuss: Do I really lose all my slotted chips if I die a second time before I make my way to my body? It seems really loving harsh, considering that people complain about losing souls in Dark Souls, and by definition in that one you almost never lose more than what you need to level up once. I'd be really pissed if I lost chips in which I have invested hundreds of thousands of Gs, or chips that I've found but can't buy (yet?).

On a semi-related note: what are you guys' chip set ups? Right now, I'm mostly going with whatever I've found enough of to bring to +4, but I'm reaching a point where I have to make decisions on what to slot in and what to leave behind, and everything seems so good... Of course I need to keep Weapon Damage, Counter, that thing that makes you rush back to the enemy after a dodge, and of course I need both Auto-Heal and Offensive Heal 'cause I need all of the healing, all the time...

I've also come to rely on Shockwave, because it feels pretty strong and useful, but I wish I could get rid of it because, somehow, it's the one thing that makes this game about a blindfolded android in a maid outfit with no panties a little too anime for my taste.

Yep, you do. (You could always turn your difficulty down to easy and cheese the recovery)
As they say: Souls come and go.
Losing your chips is a killer though. (You get a source of well levelled buyable chips but they're all max cost.)

I'm on Hard on my current play so I run a high level defence chip, at least +6 but I have a +8 incase I want it too. I max my movement speed out with a +2 and a +4 chip, and I use a +8 Evade Range Up because I need 200% evade. I need to fuse a better +8 than I have though currently. I put a couple of lower level Overclocks in too because they're cumulative so you get more bang for your cost that way. That counter chip I mentioned as well. With whatever is left, I put a low cost Auto Heal in and a drop rate up but I can do without both.

I keep what essentially is a clone of that set but with ranged defence up instead of melee though because that's the name of the game on hard. Specialise or die.

And Shockwave is really good, but if you feel it's a crutch, dump it.

e: movement speed caps with a 2 and 4, not a 2 and a 6*

Start caring at the point where you are having too difficult/tedious a time.

The games designed for you to come back and complete stuff later, like on another play through or post-game. No shame in giving up for now.

Seems like there's a lot of different chips and set ups that are useful, so everyone can find what they like rather than going for the 'best'.

I liked deadly heal, auto heal and offensive heal, with evade distance and movement speed for general movement. Maybe I don't do the most damage or do anything fancy, but I never die. e; oh and anti-chain damage

Depends where you are. If you're in Route B and this low levelled, everything's going to be a bit of a pain. If you've just come across them in the open world, just give the area a wide berth until you're closer to appropriate.

The thing about reusing dead bodies would be a very interesting mechanic in dark souls/bloodborne. Having more deaths in harder places would dynamically help people where they needed it the most. Maybe the game would get too easy if you could heal from blood puddles and summon AI helpers, but that could be balanced with a fair cost.

They really did some nice stuff with the asynchronous MP in this game.

A vendor will open up at some point and it can sell them. Check your map for new icons after major plot happenings.

Specifics:
Emil's store, after the forest castle is cleared. His inventory changes depending on where he is when stopped.

Another vendor will sell lower ranked versions of Overclock after clearing a quest in the forest ravine but this is a chore on Playthrough A.

Finishing the resistance member quest in Pascal's village should award one.
For the step in Flooded City, give them money, leave the Flooded City until it tells you the quest updated and go back and then finish the quest through to completion.
