There it is again... Murray getting picked in the expansion draft.

Never gonna happen. They will buy MAF out and eat the cap hit before they let Murray get drafted.

It's a nice dream for them to have, but even if it got down to the wire and they had no other choice, they could flip Murray to someone for something. There is 0 chance Vegas "picks" Murray. I won't :toxx: that they won't end up with him, but I'd be willing to wager something dire against them getting him for free.

Buying him out is a waste of resources. (EDIT: It's not *as bad* as I thought it'd be. At 1.9m/year for the next 4 seasons if bought out after this season, it's not good especially if the salary cap barely rises)
The closer the expansion draft gets, the worse you're going to get fleeced when you give up MAF. If you're a GM, and you see that situation you're going "I'll have one MAF, two decent prospects and some retained salary in exchange for this <insert massive cap hit here>". Ideally, he'd be gone by now and I don't get why I keep reading "OH BUT GOALTENDING IS A PITTSBURGH STRENGTH!" 'cos in the offseason it's going to be a massive weakness.

It's only $2 million for a few seasons, which they very well could end up having to retain to move the bastard anyway. Not great but still a net $3m gain. There's also the not spoken about option that MAF just agrees to waive and roll the dice on getting picked or not. If he really wants to stay as the back-up I think JR could accommodate that but by all the media account/reading between the lines he still believes he's a starter so I'd say he's going to do what's necessary to facilitate a move to somewhere in his best interest.
Everyone in the org knows Murray is the better goalie now/future of the position for the franchise, so it would take serious incompetence (like hiring Benning) or unknown circumstances to get them to move him over MAF.

Are there any players likely to be available where it actually would be a good idea for them to draft them? Like, surely somebody has to be their Brian Bellows or whatever.

Also what's the latest on their name?

Namestikov from Tampa, Jarnkrok from Nashville, and Dumba from Minnesota are good long term options that will likely be exposed.

Oh, and Matt Murray. :getin:

Rakell is the right choice but everyone has such a hard-on for Fowler despite the fact that he's platinum-grade poo poo.

Nate Schmidt is almost certainly going to be available and he is a good player. Grubauer has also been good but who knows how good goalies actually end up being after two good years as a backup.

i mean, werent most good goalies in the league either backups or in a timeshare before taking over full time starting duties?

I'm just saying that Grubauer has been an excellent backup but I'm not sure that it necessarily will translate to success as a starter especially since he has fewer than 50 GP under his belt.

I SUPPORT ALL THE PREDATORS

The location is certainly garbage but I don't know that this is necessarily the slam dunk data to prove it. For example, while Detroit might be an aberration, the vast majority of its ticket holders live 15+ miles away from the arena.

It's a combination of location + transit routes, not necessarily just the surrounding population. But a cool supporting argument nonetheless. The data they collected is great.

Using 1-2 mile radii doesn't make a whole lot of sense for most of these cities, too. When you center it around 10 miles, Arizona is right in the middle of the pack. I bet way more fans make 10 mile commutes in other cities than this argument presupposes.

edit: alternatively I'm an idiot and the population total confirms that it's not only a bad location to get to, it's also not by anything that would entice people to come or stay outside of a hockey game. carry on.

Most cities that have a downtown arena have their season ticket base in affluent suburbs; most cities that have a downtown arena usually have a train or something that can get them there too, though.

That's basically it. There's a bunch of factors why it's a bad idea but you really have to work to be bottom in the league in population near you when you have the 6th biggest city in the nation

Transit there sucks because it's out in the boondocks instead of downtown too. We have a shiny new light rail system that services basketball, baseball, and the college sports, and it's like 20 years away from possibly going to the coyotes
