I had a blast playing through Abzu with my 3 year old, if that's worth anything.

Journey was SO good, like I am not exaggerating when I say that it is my absolute favorite game of all time in the sense that absolutely nothing has come even close to the sense of wonder and sadness and joy it made me feel. Like just thinking of the end part (the snow/after the snow) I'm getting goosebumps. What has thatgamecompany done since then? Anything?

I'm a monster because I think Journey is overrated. It's probably because my roommate at the time loved it and told me it was going to be the greatest thing I've ever played etc etc and when I finally got around to it I thought it was just okay.

I think it's fine to believe a game is just okay. A lot of titles that people think are amazing are in reality just okay, gamers have very low standards.

In the case of games like Journey, Night in the Woods, Gone Home or even This War of Mine I think that personal experience and what you're into "besides games" informs your opinion of it a lot more than usual. That said, I still maintain that This War of Mine is actually very fun as a game on top of all the other reasons it's good.

Haha, I was debating whether or not to include Papers Please instead of TWOM. I've replayed that game a bunch because it really is just fun, somehow. Maybe I should get a job at the DMV

Also, unlike Cook Serve Delicious I don't wind up physically worn out after playing it, which is great! The same kind of tension and focus, but not quite as horrible.

I said come in! posted:I think it's fine to believe a game is just okay. A lot of titles that people think are amazing are in reality just okay, gamers have very low standards. Yeah. I mean its presentation was really cool and it was kind of neat to play with another anonymous person that I could only communicate with via chimes. I just didn't find the game at all fun to play, or not more than any other "solve simple puzzles to progress" platform games. I also feel the ending was depressing. Most people consider it uplifting but the way I saw it was that you become a flash of light that reincarnates in the desert to start again. There's no end to the journey. You are all Sisyphus.

Abzu is NOT Journey. Abzu is fun but light. A spectacle with some peppered messaging. Every time it comes up I mention that I played it with my 3 year old on purpose. It's like going to an aquarium but a heavily themed, light storyline aquarium. Edit: It is very joyful and chill, though. mutata fucked around with this message at 01:56 on Mar 20, 2017 |

Personally I think that the competition to see who's the most detached from everything gets kind of tiresome after a while. There's a pretty big middle ground between "a transcendent, life-altering experience" and "eh, it's okay I guess" but it seems like any time someone says "hey guys, this game is really good" it's like sending up a signal for everybody to pop up and go well actually did you know that it's probably not that good, maybe it's merely okay, maybe it's not even that, and actually it probably isn't?
