Well again no, because only 47% of of people under 24 are more likely to buy something advertised that way, whereas way more than 47% believe in equality. And I'm just going out on a limb here, but maybe it's because they realize the appeals are opportunistic and meaningless, like this thread is about.

I mean, that's loving breathtaking. the rich producer of an entertainment venue that only other rich people are even eligible to potentially attend is now going to shill for a financial institution that exclusively benefits the ultra-rich. if this was in a parody like The Onion people would complain that it was too on-the-nose.

the majority of people in this country can't cover a $500 unexpected expense, advocating for their financial literacy should be like fourteenth on your priority list after higher wages, affordable healthcare, affordable childcare, affordable education, smash racism/patriarchy, (a billion other things), financial literacy

but if only they used a low expense ratio index fund to invest the extra -$100 in income they had, they'd be set, yessiree

I feel fine doubling down on the notion that, if you can't handle a $500 expense, it's probably because you don't make enough money instead of a lack of self-flagellation on the altar of John C. Bogle (if you'll notice, the post that started this tangent was regarding Morgan Stanley, who I'm pretty sure is going to "educate" you into assuming as much debt as possible instead of how to balance a checkbook)

sure, maybe if you presuppose that people aren't utterly brainwashed by capitalism and pitted against a predatory financial industry trying to claw every dollar (especially future-earned dollars) out of their hands

the majority of americans can't cover a unexpected $500 expense, but you can bet they'll buy that new car or put a vacation on a CC balance. poor people, middle class people, and rich people are all equally stupid. there are people living in $500k houses that can't cover a $500 expense, this isn't a living wage thing.

Luckily Morgan Stanley doesn't give a flying gently caress whether you put that vacation on credit or up your rear end, all they want is the fees on your retirement fund. I read the article and all I saw was "save more" aka "give us more money to charge a fee on", not "be less materialistic" or "here's a cheap way to fix your fridge" - and anybody that can't read between the lines on why Morgan Stanley doesn't talk about that latter part of financial education (being frugal) is a maroon

There was a news story about a postal worker who would give 50/week to a US debt office to help pay down the national debt. He'd been doing it for numerous years. Financial Literacy would be about informing him that the Federal Government Budget isn't comparable to his personal house hold budget, and he would be served better just putting that money into a savings account or T-Bills, if he ostensibly wants to help the national-debt.

I'm sure Morgan Stanley would gladly advise him about all his options.

For years, I drove down a not popular anymore highway to go from a small town with a state college in it to a dying ex-industrial town with a community college in it. I'd see trailer parks and trailers and hitchhikers and hitchhikers with crutches and dead buisnesses and towns it didn't seem anyone lived in and basically just a goddamn wasteland that no one has cared about for years. But on the billboards? Aside from churches and mcdonalds there was also that god drat FEED THE PIG sign.

That loving FEED THE PIG ad campaign. I can't be the only one who remembers it: some dude in pig makeup would eat things and it was designed to get people to try and save more money. And sure, people don't save as much as they should even if they do have money. But all I could think of whenever I saw it was how goddamn condescending it was. I'd drive by little houses in the middle of nowhere that kept having more and more furniture for sale every week until eventually they were for sale, I'd go into a town that as far as I could tell was a gas station, a place to do rodeo, and a loving courthouse that nailed everyone for the sudden drop to 30 from 50 coming around a corner, or go past the restaurant that I never saw anyone in and there some gruesome leering pig-man would be telling me to save more, to put your money in banks, to just plan your life better! Don't worry about systemic problems with how our society has shaped up, you just gotta get a handle on your finances, you dumb poo poo!

Which is the best corporate america and global finance can say to all those run over by their endless march. "Things are great! You're just to goddamn stupid to take part in this."

it'd be less disingenuous if LMW had decided to provide free financial advice to all of the common-folk as a completely altruistic gesture of goodwill towards his fellow man.

dude got paid to be in a morgan stanley advertisement. it isn't a huge intuitive leap to understand that this kind of celebrity endorsement of a product that realistically does not benefit the average beleaguered U.S. citizen is just an attempt to continue to cash-in on, and extend, his 15 minutes of fame. even if he didn't get quid pro quo paid to do the advertisement, the nature of this exposure is still intended to benefit and promote his overall brand.
