Nurse Birch probably doesn't wear a tie because a patient could use it to choke him. Even a clip-on could be dangerous to someone feeling suicidal. Or he's like me and has an unpleasant sensation whenever the top button is undone.

And all of the adds should have been in-universe. And featured Alan so that he could be haunted by even more of his failings.

I really don't remember seeing those actual TV ads when I played Alan Wake. Maybe because I bought the game in Australia and there would be no point? (Or - maybe more likely - they could only legally show the ads in certain regions?)

Or maybe I just missed them. I don't know, it's been a while.

I will play devil's advocate for the commercials, because I think it adds a touch of realism. Probably would've worked better if that wasn't the only TV in the game what did it (like maybe you could catch the tail end of that Mustang commercial before an episode of Night Springs, or something).

I'm not saying it isn't stupid, just... realistic.

Sure, product placement is bad, but I actually like how Alan Wake does those commercials. There's just something so arrogant about sticking a commercial on an actual TV. It's like the game knows it's selling out, but instead of trying to hide that from the player, the game just admits it in a blunt manner.

Kibayasu posted:

Part of me wishes they strung out the "You're actually crazy Alan/player" angle a little bit longer before going back to business as usual. But since this is a Remedy game and isn't a game just about Alan Wake the other part of me realizes that of course the player doesn't believe their character is actually going crazy because this is a video game

The hospital part is great, and I wish the game had more of these "daytime" segments because they expand on the characters and setting better than the "nighttime" sections. My biggest problem, though, comes with pacing. Remedy could have played the "crazy" angle more, but it would've been too late. The player has no reason to doubt Alan's sanity (with regards to Alice's disappearance; other parts of his sanity may be up for question). At the same time, I like the idea of Hartman as a villain, but he's too sparse in the preceding game. This episode probably has the most interesting progression. Even if we don't doubt Alan's sanity, the hospital still works. It's fun to explore and the dialogue is great. We start to see some of the bigger picture of the mystery, and, I think, it does allow for some of the bigger questions, which would be spoilers now, that make me love the game.

The fact that these mental patients are portrayed as punchlines is really uncomfortable to watch. And why do game designers think it's funny to make jokes about game designers? None of the jokes are ever funny and they always come across as smug attacks on critics.

Holy poo poo, Alan is a monster for thinking that someone working in a mental institution "had it coming" when she was beaten to death by a patient. Also, like others have said, Alan smiling at the horrible death of another person is all the more reason to hate him. Whenever the main character in media is a writer the story is always about how hard the creative process is. I'm sick and tired of writers whining about "writers block" and the endless difficulties of their job. I'd really like it if just once there was a writer character who got called out for this poo poo. I don't want to watch/play something where a person with a job solely complains about that job.

I really appreciate how funny and entertaining CJacobs and Skippy have been because this game has a unlikable cast and boring gameplay, so without the two of them there'd be no reason to watch these videos. Such a shame that the Max Payne people fell so hard.

ZEN, OR THE SKILL TO CATCH A KILLER

I would like to thank Nerdist.com for providing the thumbnails for (most of) the rest of the watchalong, because I am far too lazy to go through all of the episodes and pick thumbnails out myself.

It's time for the show to go nuts. Twin Peaks is about to show you its true colors, whether you're ready for it or not. See, as I mentioned in the last post it lost a lot of its viewership come the second week. This third week, though, is responsible for pulling 'em back in. This is the last episode directed by Lynch himself for quite a while, and let me tell you, it really shows. When people think of Twin Peaks they think Kyle MacLachlan, red curtains, and black-and-white zig-zag pattern linoleum. Let's find out why that is.

SYNOPSIS

I like that occasionally the show will do cut-ins during the opening credits instead of after. This is one such occurrence, and it's a pretty mundane one. It does tell you all you need to know about the Hornes' family life, at least! Jerry is a weird dude, but I appreciate that he's basically just Ben + Caffeine. I think he serves to make Ben feel a bit more human at the same time as having his own character. The guy is stiff as a board to the rest of his family, but when it comes to his own blood there's a rush of enthusiasm from him. He also loses his table manners.

Make note of Ben's wife, by the way (her name is Sylvia). You are going to see her one more time and then she vanishes from the show never to be seen again. Nobody knows why.

Either way, the boys go to One-Eyed Jack's because they need some R&R and wanna check out the local housewares. One thing that has always bugged me about this scene (besides the incredible deer antler chandelier above the pool table) is that the casino is empty. Maybe the guys went there on a night when it's closed or they're in a private room or I dunno, but it's like completely silent and it irks me a bit. It's probably intentional. I don't have much more to say about the scene itself except for, what the hell kind of a name is 'Blackie'? That's not, like, an alias or something. It's actually her name. Her name is Blackie O'Reilly.

Ben gets to get his jimmies a-rustlin' and we cut back to James and Donna, having finished their dinner. Donna's parents, again being surprisingly trusting toward someone who tried to sneak out when there is a serial-killer-driven curfew on the town, leave the two of them alone. With some time by themselves, they finally confess their love for each other and decide not to feel bad about it. I mean, good for them, but it's not like there was any obligation to feel bad. Especially now that they're finding out that Laura was kind of a shady person. Oh well, I'm sure we'll never hear about it again.

At the Great Northern, Cooper has perfected his whittling in like 2 days. The previous watchalong update met with some complaints (very light ones mind you) about Coop being a mary sue. It's true to some extent; he is good at just about everything and will become good at anything he doesn't know about almost immediately. He has practically superhuman intuition and perception, and he's all-around just a good person. I wouldn't say he has no character flaws because as we will learn that's just patently untrue, but he certainly does skirt the line between being good and being TOO good.

I think the show toes the line well, though; when Coop demonstrates that he's really perceptive, for example, it's not to show how he is better than other people as is the case with mary sue inserts. Like someone mentioned previously, Coop didn't spot James' motorcycle in Laura's eyeball- he saw Bobby notice it, and then looked at what he was looking for. I understand the complaint that he's just miles above the other characters in terms of his skillset, but I think the point is to show that even despite that he still cannot solve the mystery by himself. Even with how good Coop is, he can't go it alone.

As we learn in this very scene, because a note suddenly appears slipped under his door. A pretty crucial one, at that. He gets a mysterious tip from a stranger about "Jack with One Eye"... but as he sniffs it and then smiles, we can already tell he knows who gave it to him.

Meanwhile, Bobby and Mike are making the drug trade they spoke of in the previous episode. Surprise surprise, the person they're trading with just so happens to be Leo. He is, of course, not happy that the two of them don't have his full payment for the cocaine they've been brought. Ever the understanding gentleman, Leo is completely reticent to the fact that Laura had the rest of the money and it is now in the hands of the police, absolutely thrilled that his wife is cheating on him with some mysterious third party, and just downright pleased that the deal has gone over like a lead balloon.

Just kidding, he threatens to kill Bobby and Mike with a shotgun and they run away. The way the football stays on the hood of the car when they are driving away has bothered me for 20 years. How is that football staying on there. God drat.

The next morning, Ed comes home covered in grease and oil from working in the garage. I feel sort of bad for him as he fumbles over Nadine's stupid goddamn drape runners and gets lambasted for it. Also Nadine has practically superhuman strength for some reason. I do not know how Lynch wants me to feel about Nadine other than 'confused and afraid'. If 'confused and afraid' is the extent of it, then I say well done.

Bobby, presumably having stayed up all night out of fear of being splatted with Leo's shotgun like an imp from Doom, goes to visit Shelly. She tells him in very plain terms (understandably) to go away before Leo catches them because bad things will happen if that occurs. There's one thing you should know by now about Bobby, and it is that he does not take 'no' for an answer. He's that guy everybody knows who just pretends like you didn't say anything. Infuriating to an extent, but he's still your friend even begrudgingly so. He knows he can't do anything about Leo but seeing Shelly hurt inspires him to want to try. For being such a bad kid, Bobby's a good kid... paradoxical though that may be.

People in glass woods should not throw stones. Pretty sure that's how the saying goes. I'm glad Cooper has worldly interests, and Tibet does sound like a fascinating place. He thinks that his mind knows who the "J" referred to in Laura's diary is, but he isn't consciously aware of it. Why he thinks this, I cannot fathom- maybe it's not his first rock-chucking rodeo. Regardless, the police squad is helping him execute his frankly terrible and crazy plan by running through all the relevant J's.

And of course, the only two throws that land a hit on the poor glass bottle are Dr. Jacoby and Leo Johnson. I find this scene to be fascinating, at least partially for reasons we will discuss later in the watchalong series. For now, though, consider this: We the viewers already know that Leo and Dr. Jacoby have stuff to do with Laura, but could Coop reasonably have figured that out without the rock throwing? Just some food for thought.

The next scene serves little purpose that I can tell. Maybe I'm missing something. Audrey subtly probes Donna for info about Laura's connection to her father, and then spills the beans about her crush on our boy Cooper. Then she dances like a weirdo again. I can't help but feel that Audrey has some unnamed disorder that the show never gets into. She's just strange enough to be human-weird, but not David-Lynch-weird. She's not the kind of weird where you can tell it's to serve a point in the metanarrative outside of her characterization. Maybe it runs in the family.

At the police station, it is time to meet the "Albert" that Cooper was speaking to in the last episode. As it turns out, he is in essence the anti-Coop. He hates small town life, hates manners, and is a stone-cold professional. Miguel Ferrer is absolutely fantastic as Albert Rosenfield, and he is definitely one of my favorite characters for his interactions with the townies. You may know him as the rear end in a top hat CEO that got blown away by the ED 209 prototype in Robocop.

I do not like seeing people be mean to friendly folk like Harry and Lucy, it is upsetting. But in my opinion, someone has to be. Like I said during Leo's introductory scene, all the townsfolk are nice and pleasant people at heart. They're quaint. The show needs people like Leo and Albert to be the mean jerk to balance them out. Said balance is very delicate because you want to avoid homogenization of either side. I think the show pulls it off expertly.

Also, can we just stop for a second to admire Cooper's wordless thumbs up?

Because like, look at this. Look at it. And what was with the nose-honking thing?? Was it scripted?? Was it an intentional poke at the audience?? Were their smiles genuine?? Is Lynch a genius????

Speaking of genius, Nadine is no longer angry at Ed. He bumbled into helping her with her creation of the Drape Runners of Silence +1, and thus their relationship remains solid. His bewildered expression matches mine. I love her manic sprint in his direction, when I first watched the episode I was concerned that he was about to take another knock to the forehead. It's like staring down an oncoming train and your foot is stuck in the tracks.

Later, at the Packard home, Pete is being a real sneaky sneak while pretending to clean his boots on Catherine's bed. Unsurprisingly, their marriage is basically non-existent and they sleep separately. While she's distracted, he sneaks a key to Josie and then makes his leave. Pete remains the best character. Josie unlocks a hidden wall safe with the key, revealing two sets of ledgers for the sawmill. One shows the mill making a profit, and the other bankruptcy. Because she is a bad business co-owner, Josie is unsure which is real, but either way she is now privvy to Catherine's shady dealings with Ben.

Meanwhile, things continue to spiral out of control for the mental state of the remaining Palmer family. Now it's Leland's turn to be stricken with grief as he dances with the photo of Laura we all know and love. This scene is freaky and eerie in a really cool way. Leland's freakout is just unnatural enough to seem strange, but it is- intentionally I'm sure -hard to tell how much of that is the directing and how much is just how Ray Wise acted the scene out. As Sarah tries to snap him out of his stupor, he smashes the photo and smears some blood on it, leading her to scream in frustration. A fun fact for you: That's real blood. Ray Wise beat Django Unchained to the punch by several years, accidentally cutting his hand on the photo frame in real life. The blood smeared on the picture was improvised.

And so, it's time for the moment that people who've watched the series before have been waiting for: Cooper's dream sequence. This became such an iconic piece of television that you can invoke memories of it in fans of the show just with the colors red, black, and white. Everything Twin Peaks is truly about can be condensed into this scene. It's entertaining, weird, obtuse, a little bit funny, and a little bit frightening. And in my opinion, it's genius.

Let's rock!

Cooper, looking relatively older (the makeup was a bit inaccurate, as it turns out), sits in the red room you see in the thumbnail. You've seen this room in Silent Hill, more recently The Evil Within, among other places. Horror loves to reference this room. Coop seems relatively calm in the dream, if a bit confused. He sees short flashes of scenes from previous episodes: Sarah Palmer, the raggedy looking man, and the locket surrounded by candles. Then we finally meet the one-armed man, who reads aloud the full poem the police found a bit of at the murder site:

Through the darkness of future past /
The magician longs to see
One chants out between two worlds /
FIRE
WALK WITH ME

And of course, we have no idea what that means. Don't worry, you aren't supposed to. The one-armed man explains to Coop (or rather, to us) that his name is Mike, and that he lived with a killer named BOB above a convenience store. He claims they used to be partners, but he lopped off his arm because he and BOB's shared tattoo caused him to do evil things. Now he seeks BOB out.

Then we meet the man himself. BOB, conveniently facing the camera so it appears as if he is missing the opposite arm for a moment, threatens to do his devilish deed to whoever we're supposed to be at the moment. He promises us that he will kill again, and creeps everyone collectively watching Twin Peaks out. Great.

In the red room, the dwarf- speaking backwards, because of course he is -is very excited to tell Coop what's up. Laura Palmer joins him, sitting with him in the chairs opposite Coop. The dwarf lets him know a couple things:

That gum he likes is gonna come back in style! :toot: and that Laura is his cousin, and she's "filled with secrets." Cooper interrupts him to ask if Laura is really Laura, and to be fair I think that's a pretty appropriate question. She doesn't explicitly say no; instead she says, “I feel like I know her…but sometimes, my arms bend back.”

The dwarf spouts some more cryptic words, and then gets up and starts dancing because hey why not. I guess he's in a good mood. Laura (or... not-laura?) bends over to give Coop a sultry kiss, and then whispers something in his ear that is so exciting it wakes him right up. He hurries to his phone and calls up Harry, who answers surprisingly quickly for it being the middle of the night. The episode ends with probably the most cliffhanger-y cliffhanger anybody has ever hung from: Cooper tells Harry that he knows who killed Laura Palmer.

MY THOUGHTS

And so it ends. With that one strange sequence, Twin Peaks solidified itself as a hallmark in prime time television. Like I said, this episode encapsulates everything Twin Peaks is about : It's the perfect mixture of surreal and... well, not surreal. David Lynch has a knack for making you go "what???" and if you're like me, you scratched your head in confusion about five times in this single hour of TV.

This is where people become either hooked on Twin Peaks or decide it's not for them. When I first watched the show I fell into the former camp immediately. David Lynch is one of my favorite directors, and the idea of him doing a serial program brought me no small amount of joy. What came of it is in my opinion utter brilliance. The show dares to make you wonder not just what's going to happen next, but what the stuff you just saw meant. It doesn't give you an answer right away, not just to keep the intrigue alive, but so that you have something to think about until the next episode comes along. For us in the year 2017, we could keep going and get our fix of the whole series right now. But back in the 90s it was revolutionary to keep plot threads spooled up for more than one or two episodes at a time. And let me tell you, we've got quite a length of yarn to unravel.

I'm not going to ask you to interpret Coop's dream because that'd be just mean of me, so instead my questions this time focus on your opinion of the show:

How do you feel about Twin Peaks? Are you liking it so far? Has this episode hooked you, or were you already hooked? And if it didn't, why not? Do you sympathize with my fanboy-ing over Lynch's directing/writing style?

Personally, I was hooked the moment Coop rode into town chatting about cherry pie and Douglas firs to his dictaphone. That being said, on rewatches, I always dread the Pilot because its pacing seems kind of off. Twin Peaks really hits its stride in this episode, though. Tibet, Albert, weird Ray Wise and strange, mystery-solving dreams. What more could you want?

You playing Deadly Premonition put me in the mood to play my old copies of the Japanese version and the Director's Cut for PS3 again. The controls for the Director's Cut are considerably less awful, if you can imagine that. The Japanese version has some really cool mood lighting, though, and is therefore superior. :smug:

Have you managed to fix Deadly Premonition by now, or is it just gonna crash constantly? I mean, it's not like I mind either way, just wondering. Most of them require restarting your computer though so if we run into one on the stream it'll be red curtains for Deadly Premonition.

This sounds like quitter talk.

My second 12 hour stream is going to be taking place tomorrow at 10am central! For real this time! Come hang out and watch me lose my loving mind as I play more Deadly Premonition (not for the whole 12 hours though)! Spend the next 14 hours waiting for the stream here!

What time is this in GMT?
