It's also quite possible your developer/agitation scheme is responsible for some of the grain too. More/stronger agitation and higher development temperatures can definitely make grain more pronounced.

Looking at my notes, I did 11:50 in ddx with 60 second initial agitation and then 5 second flips every 30 seconds. I didn't know that agitation would introduce more grain; I was under the impression it would just make it more contrasty. I have a couple more rolls to develop, so with knowing this, I think I will play with the agitation intervals a bit.

poo poo, I was all ready to buy a Pentax 645 from Japan on eBay. Now this thread has me thinking I should get a 6x7 instead. I have had great success shooting 35mm with my Pentax Spotmatic. I almost always prefer a 28mm lens. But now, I am now for more detail and sharpness in images like this. A 645 (or 645N) with a 45mm lens seems like one path. Even though I have gone without it for years, the idea of autofocus is appealing for the times when there are human beings or other live subjects in the frame. A Pentax 6x7 seems more in keeping with my current all-manual tradition. I would want a 55mm lens to feel equivalent to 28mm in 35, right? I've had a Yashica 124G for years, but have never taken to the TLR viewfinder or 80mm lens.

I'm curious as to what you guys are using to lug around your medium format gear in. I'm probably being stupid, but I have a trip to Hawaii coming up in May and feel like I would enjoy having the 67 with me while there. I have a stop in Anaheim to take the kids to Disneyland on the way, so I would need to haul the XT-1 for candid moments, but wonder if I'm being silly trying to carry all that on a plane. I also have a bike trip to Washington/Oregon/Cali in July and would love to have the 67 or the Mamiya with me, but again I have no idea how to transport it securely since they are so big. I'm seriously in love with these cameras and the process of developing my own film. They are so much fun to shoot! I've burned through 12 rolls of film in like 2 weeks!   Zag  Somewhere in Ohio.... I usually take an MF camera with me when I travel in addition to my DSLR. I use a LowePro backpack that is cabin baggage compatible and that (just) fits two bodies, a few lenses, my laptop, a tripod and the usual accessories. I think that most larger bags will handle a big body like your Mamiya plus one or two smaller bodies and a reasonable selection of lenses and other stuff. I guess if you exclusively shoot with huge lenses across all your gear or you need something like a video stabiliser then it's going to get awkward but I haven't had a problem with carrying big cameras around in addition to regular sized options. You'll be glad when you finally get to put the bag down though.

I can jam the RB67, both of its lenses, and a couple of 35mm/mirrorless cameras into my Naneu 217°F. Everything feels well-protected and secure inside it, and it can keep its contents relatively cool for a few hours in sweltering heat if you pack it in an air-conditioned room and keep it zipped up. Kind of a nice feature if you're traveling with film. It's a bulky bag, though.

Right on. I have a 30L Lowepro hiking backpack, but the camera area just isn't working for the 67 and the XT1 together. The Naneu looks similar to the Tamarack Expedition I used to have. It was a great bag, but man was it huge and cumbersome when flying.

I travel with a Domke J2 Journalist, and in a pinch it's just big enough for a Hasselblad, three backs, a Nikon F5, and two lenses for each, though the F5 has to travel unmounted. A big Nikon zoom would probably cut me to one. It's just small enough to fit under an airline seat. My shoulder hates me for it, though not as much now that I got the postal-style strap pad.

Was out the lakes the other day and tried to do an 11x14 tintype. Same old developer problems. 11x14's are way harder than 8x10's. Getting there but at least dust isn't an issue anymore. Need to work on getting the developer to flow more evenly and stop it evenly as well. the misty streaks in the bottom half of the image are parts where the developer has either hit that area a second or so before the rest or where the water stop hasn't washed it off enough and it's just diluted the developer into the water and continued to develop a little slower. Stop water behaves super oily when it hits the plate.

Thats really nice Sludge Tank, nailing the exposure. I can only imagine how difficult it is dealing with such a big plate, 8x10 was more than hard enough for me. Here's a couple of 6x9 cropped to 4x5, something I'm liking these days.
