After about 5 hours in with relatively low expectations and having no impulse control because I similarly have had an itch for a space game and will buy anything branded mass effect, I'm relatively enjoying it. There are plenty of valid criticisms, but after the first hour or so of terrible dialogue and animations, I got over that part. The environments themselves so far are quite cool and the combat is enjoyable. I also have Horizon and Zelda, and even with those games clearly eclipsing this one in terms of innovation and polish, I don't regret my purchase. It's not what it could have been, but for what it is, it's decent. I think you'll enjoy it.

The difference of animation between each individual character creator setting is interesting, much less between the two genders. Here's my OG BroRyder looking like he's about to cry, as we know:

And yet here's the FemRyder I just made in the same exact shot, doing her best impression of a Vanguard about to Charge.

(which is inappropriate, young lady, because you're an Infiltrator!)

Incidentally...unless there's greater variation between the dialogue you get as male or female Ryder than I'd thought, some of the individual dialogue choices you make in the game do actually affect the dialogue options you get later on. In my first game I'd chosen to tell the Hyperion captain that I didn't know DadRyder very well growing up, and so the only real "mourning" option thirty minutes later was to wax poetic about how he's a hero who made a great sacrifice and yada yada. In the second game though, I'd implied that he and I were closer, and that same dialogue option was replaced with one where I was in more shock and disbelief.

It was interesting. Makes me wonder if this sort of thing dies down the further you get into the game, or maybe just gets more and more unnoticeable as your Ryder gets more and more defined.

The Tempest is I think the worst designed spaceship I've ever seen in a space opera. The captain's stateroom is bigger than the living quarters for the entire rest of the crew, there's a meeting room as big as the stateroom and there's giant windows everywhere.

The Tempest being such a rip off of the Normandy is kind of appropriate considering how much this game feels like an imitation of the first three mass effect games. It almost feels like it should have been published by Focus Home Interactive or Deep Silver. It's a game made by people who played the Mass Effect trilogy and had some idea of why people enjoyed them but clearly just did not have the competence or resources to do it themselves.

I feel like the Tempest has some interesting design ideas but compromises with the camera and playability hurt it. The worst thing is these compromises don't seem necessary.

At heart the Tempest is a civilian exploration vessel, so its large windows and large common area make sense in that context. There's a lot of lab space tucked away throughout the ship and that makes sense too, even if the botany lab Cora talks about has a grand total of two potted plants.

The stateroom and tiny crew quarters are that way for a simple reason; the player is going to spend time in the stateroom but not the crew quarters. But the stateroom is unnecessarily huge to accommodate a camera that's unnecessarily high.

The cavernous space in the rear that's arranged around the drive core in a tiered setup with the skylight is a neat idea but there's nothing plausible in it. There's like two consoles and a meeting space on the upper deck. They could have used that space more intelligently.

An open-plan space like that with a huge sensor window would be pretty appealing on a civilian survey ship with all kinds of specialized sensors that you could set up on a benchtop and point out the window instead of trying to integrate into the ship's sensor package.

The exterior is cool but the artist clearly stuck on a bunch of fins late in the concept because somebody thought it was too phallic or not aggressive enough. The 747 tailfins kitbashed onto the engine section are a travesty.

The more I play the more I glaze over the animations. Now it mostly just jars me when I'm introduced to a new character and go "gently caress that is not right at all".

It's...very ME1 layered on DA:I. I'm okay with that.

I also actually like the limited scope of story so far. We're just trying to save this awful colonization plan from itself!

I have to assume the colonization efforts are meant to look really dumb, at least. I get this weird feeling the whole expedition was funded by the Weyland-Yutani of the Mass Effect universe, or Vault-Tec. I mean, the guy they recruited to be the lead scout for the thing was a deranged AI researcher who abandoned his family, there is something sinister going on.

Double secret speculation based on spoilers: Yeah SAM is almost definitely Ryder's mom or a simulation thereof, 'his' voice actor is a woman old enough to be Ryder's mother and Ryder dad went crazy after she died and started loving with AI even more so.

Also it's the most DRAMATIC possible twist, so of course that's what they'd do with it. Mark my words.

Yeah I find a great deal of things in this game annoying, but I'm enjoying it in spite of all that. The game really seems to fight me at all times. When it most closely emulates ME2/3, i.e. during story missions on a set map, the game is really great. The open world stuff is less impressive, even though the idea of it on paper fits ME way more than it does Dragon Age.

Actual Spoiler:

During a major mission, he actually kills Ryder and then brings them back again; it's not a climactic moment, but it does happen. There's a method to his madness, but I don't think the game is going for the "it's actually your mom" trip

It's because they added So Much Padding. There was no need to make the worlds as big as they made them outside of "we think the Nomad is kinda fun to drive, go flip it off dunes or something". Problem being, the Nomad is not really that fun to drive and the whole idea behind the 4WD/6WD is an absolute joke.
I'm enjoying the game, and I'll go back to playing it in a bit. But it's deeply flawed and you have to be wearing some thick rose tinted glasses not to see that.

White Line Fever

One thing I'm digging so far is the much smaller scope of the game. It feels like I'm making a tangible difference to the world because there's a total of what, 100k people or so from the Milky Way who made the trip. Shepard blew up three times that man people, in a 90 minute dlc.

I also like how the game is giving attention to the fact the Ryder is inexperienced. He's not the saviour and had to prove himself to everyone. Remember that epic speech Shepard gives every one on the Normandy when he first gets the ship from Anderson? Yes Ryder does NOT command that level of respect and it's noticeable. Some characters look like they actually pity Ryder.

So far I'm loving the world design. Just got to Havarl and this place is gorgeous! The Angaran resistance enclave you first visit looks beautiful as well.

I dig how the characters are understated. Except maybe Pee Bee. But the rest seem a little more like normal people than the grand cast of heroes from the previous games. That might not be to some people's liking but I'm feeling it. One thing Bioware had never really been is understated, it's neat to seem them try here.

I'm playing in 2560*1080 on a 35" ultra wide monitor with graphics on ultra, and game runs smooth as butter.

Lastly I love how multiplayer is integrated into the game. I like that it affects single player but doesn't take away from it this time if you don't play. Being able to jump into strike team missions from the Tempest is also the tits.

That's all for now.
