It's essentially Russian roulette with their coffee with one in three tasting like burnt mildew in a cup. There's a reason why dumping more sugar and cream than a bowl of count chocula into their coffee is the standard way to drink it.

BSH posted:

If you’re looking to point fingers as to why the Flyers were butchered from a play-driving standpoint last night at 5v5, go no further than the results of the three defense pairings. The Michael Del Zotto-Radko Gudas duo was again fine, with both players finishing above 50%. The Schultz/Gostisbehere and Provorov/MacDonald pairs, on the other hand, were not so lucky. The former hovered around 38%, while the “top” duo couldn’t even crack 25%.

It’s especially frustrating because Provorov and Gostisbehere are clearly the two most dynamic players on the blueline, and the ones most capable of changing a game in one play. But both are saddled with veterans who have driven down their play all year long. Ghost had a 48.9% Corsi For with Schultz entering last night’s game and was at 54.2% without; Provorov was 46.4% with and 52.8% without MacDonald.

I think the Flyers problems go beyond a couple of players on the blue line, considering they got beat by a team featuring Mark Stuart, Brian Strait, Julian Melchiori, and Nelson Nogier on the blue line. The latter three made up half of one of the worst defensive cores in the AHL until about a week ago.

Oh there are tons (the power play is dogshit, Dave Hakstol still doesn't seem to know what sort of system he wants to run, Coots is having a down year, Giroux's hip has been a problem, goaltending was abysmal from the start) but that's one of the biggest ones.

CBJ could also win the division. Their schedule is largely easy the rest of the way.

Funny you should mention that. What do GMs think?:

quote:

In a cruel twist of the NHL's divisional playoff format, say goodbye to one of the three best teams in the league in the first round.

"I don't think it was designed for this," Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "I don't think it was intended for this to happen."

quote:

"It's not a good system when your one wild-card team can cross over and they have kind of, if they perform, a clear path to get to the final," Washington GM Brian MacLellan said. "I think the incentive should be the higher team gets the easier path."

quote:

The Penguins took that path last year as the second seed in the Metropolitan and won the Stanley Cup. So Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford is fine with the format and isn't even worried about his team winning the division to evade a brutal first-round matchup.

"I don't think it's critical," Rutherford said. "Because you could end up playing another team that you don't match up as well against or you could play another team that's healthy and the team you avoided isn't healthy."

Fuckin' Pens, man.

They already deliberately scheduled the national championship pep rally right in the middle of Columbus' All-Star Weekend when there was a vacant, perfectly good Saturday the week before.

e- Saddest part is people would probably go "Wow, I mean...I like the Jackets and this may not happen again for a while...but I HAVE to go to The Shoe, right? I mean, it's the Buckeyes!".

Even the talk radio guys have been asked "Would you rather have a CBJ Cup or OSU football championship?" in one of the call-in games they play and they're going "Dude, Jackets. OSU's won enough recently."

I feel good for the Jackets, I really do. Lumbus is in just as an economically depressed area as the rest of us rust belt assholes but hasn't been able to pour their stress and fear into a pro-sports team and for the briefest of fleeting days feel like life is fulfilling. Not monotonous droning of disappointment and responsibility.
