It's fairly mediocre looking back, but I found the old newspaper comic Beau Peep to be kinda charming (my dad had a couple of old falling-apart collection books I used to read). It's about a pretentious, overweight idiot who thinks that he's smarter than he is because he reads a lot of books. He is smart only compared to his sidekick/friend Dennis who has the IQ of a turnip. Think Blackadder, but in the Foreign Legion and less funny. The funniest characters tend to be the Nomad (who is an exiled member of a desert-dwelling group, tasked with bringing back the head of an enemy warrior in order to be allowed back in. Obviously kinda racist in design and concept, but his antics tend to be more neutrally wacky (Like buying a ceremonial sword from a conman only to find it's a golf club - but then he comes across Beau and Dennis buried up to their necks in sand and realises how perfect his tool is). Other funniest characters are largely funny because they precede bad things happening to Beau, namely the brutish Frenchman who likes to bully the other characters, Mad Pierre, and the Chef, who is as drunk as he is alcoholic - however he is also vengeful about people who criticise his garbage food. Beau is the one with glasses, the other character on the bottom strip is Dennis, and the character in the top strip is the Scottish character Hamish. Personally, I still like the character designs - given that the artist only had very small amounts of face to work with, they are expressive enough that you can tell the legionnaires apart easily based on proportion and facial hair.
