Xander77 posted:Early 20th century tomatoes were apparently sweet enough to just eat on their own, like an apple. You can still get these, you just have to grow them in your own garden. They taste like an entirely different fruit. They don't transport or keep well, so they are completely impractical for commercial use.

Is this an American thing? Tomatoes sold here can be plenty sweet.

Zanzibar Ham posted:Is this an American thing? Tomatoes sold here can be plenty sweet. Regular sized tomatoes here at low to mid-tier supermarkets are often bland/mealy especially when they're not in season. But you can buy greenhouse grown little cherry/grape/newbreed tomatoes that are modified to be extra sweet. Now there are 'heirloom tomatoes' that look different and are apparently better but I've seen them still green in the high end market indicating they're still being picked green which sucks. The quality of produce at a supermarket here is much lower than what one gets at a Woolworths/Coles in Australia and that's p sad. tl;dr should grow our own

Ripening on the plant in the sun is half the secret, not the variety. The problem with supermarket tomatoes is that they are picked green for easier transport and then ripened when they are ready to sell. "Heirloom tomatoes" are just multicoloured types, they don't actually taste any better.

I've grown lots of tomatoes over the years and the different varieties definitely have different tastes than commercial ones that are vine ripened. Vine ripened commercial may taste better than the ethylene gas ripened bin o' maters, but real heirlooms beat all those. Besides, the important question is do ducks even eat tomatoes?

The problem with supermarket tomatoes is that they are picked green for easier transport and then ripened when they are ready to sell. Heirloom tomatoes actually are different. They retain a "green shoulders" gene that makes them ripen more gradually, with the excess chlorophyll becoming sugar. Standard grocery store tomatoes are missing it, which makes them a quick-ripening nice even colour that tastes like nothing. Beefsteak tomatoes are the worst offenders. I've never had one that wasn't a mealy bland disappointment.
