Obviously Trump wants names, but what is the likely fallout if Ryan just pulls the bill entirely?

I think this is right: it's the people who Ryan has arm-twisted who want the bill pulled, not Ryan himself:

https://twitter.com/JakeSherman/status/845314711071666177

There's nothing good any of them gain by being on record, and if they don't vote at all they can run on saying they'd have done whatever is most popular among the electorate they're running in for 2018.

Trump has no formal power to demand a vote. Ryan can tell him to get stuffed, Ryan is the speaker. But that would have obvious political implications and poison the relationship between Ryan and Trump even more when Ryan hasn't gotten the tax cuts he so desperately wants so I doubt Ryan will refuse the order.

I mean trump can't order the house around but if he publically does that it's going to make him or Ryan look terrible depending on if Ryan caves

as speaker of the house ryan has the power to schedule votes and can do whatever the hell he wants

the problem is that he would be going against the leader of his party to do so

but trump will blame him if the whole thing fails anyway so....

Ryan will get his tax cuts. He is just unlikely to get permanent tax cuts (since that requires the border adjustment tax, which is likely impossible to get through and definitely not without Trump arm-twisting effectively) so they'll sunset in 10 years.

It's 100% up to Paul Ryan. He has to decide whether or not he wants Trump to start campaigning for a primary challenger for Ryan's seat on Monday.

(Don't tell me Trump isn't petty enough to do this)

ryan is explicitly going to beg trump to tell him what to do so he can tell his members sorry for having to take this vote, trump made me

Trump already did that in 2016. The primary challenger got creamed something like 83-17. Ryan isn't at all worried about that, he's worried about his members who really don't want to take this no-win vote.

edit: it is, of course, entirely possible that 22 rebels vote to declare the speakership vacant, which the Democrats will happily support them on.

Ryan hadn't betrayed Trump at that point.

And previous failure has never stopped Trump from doing something before.

I have no idea but I strongly suspect 22+ :v:. But "moderates" who hadn't previously said no coming out as a no at this point means they're convinced it's dead and are jumping ship I think, and I think Comstock is close enough to Northern Virginia that she's a "moderate".

New York Times sharpening the knives:

quote:

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, facing a revolt among conservative and moderate Republicans, rushed to the White House Friday afternoon to inform President Trump he did not have the votes to pass legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act and to decide whether to pull the bill from consideration.

The president and the speaker faced the humiliating prospect of a major defeat on legislation promised for seven years, since the landmark health legislation was signed into law. President Trump had demanded a vote regardless, which has been scheduled for Friday afternoon. But House leaders were leaning against such a public loss.

It seems that Comstock is the start of the "would have votes yes if needed to pass, now voting no" avalanche.

As people are pointing out on her Twitter, Clinton won VA10 by 10% and Comstock won reelection by 6%. I think locals who actually follow politics will see her bullshit stance of waiting until the bill was good and dead but she'll undoubtedly start sending out fliers about how she "stood up for our healthcare".

Its worth a try, but my guess is that people who were outraged over Trumpcare won't notice or care she voted against it, and a non-zero part of her base won't come out and vote anymore.
