Steam Link: http://store.steampowered.com/app/578080 THIS IS AN UNOPTIMIZED EARLY ACCESS GAME, YOU REALLY WANT 16GB OF RAM AND THE GAME INSTALLED ON AN SSD Discord: https://discord.gg/JuWK5HN - Join our Discord and play with these Forum Superstars PlayerUnknown is the man behind the Arma 2 and Arma 3 Battle Royale mods and also collaborated with the H1Z1 team to make King of the Kill. Now he is releasing his own game, developed by Blue Hole studios (Tera Online.) It just went on Steam Early Access on March 23, 2017 and costs $30. For those unfamiliar with this game, up to 100 players start in a plane, jump out and start scavenging and fighting each other until only one remains. The playable area shrinks as time goes on, forcing players into encounters until it's over. It's a fun, tense game and each round takes up to 40 minutes. In terms of gameplay it is supposed to be somewhere between Arma 3 BR and H1Z1 in terms of realism and arcade. There are currently three modes, Solo, Duos (teams of two) and Squad (teams of up to 4.) Currently it is only for PC, but I believe the plan is to go to final build within 6 months and release for XBox One and PS4. I'm having a lot of fun with it, but it obviously needs some work. It runs in Unreal engine which tends to make things shiny and the optimization is pretty bad right now, my FPS will sometimes drop to the 30s and that's with a GTX1080. I also came from Arma 3 BR and never played H1Z1, so I wish some things were more like Arma. The bullet drop is minimal right now, but when I talked to PlayerUnknown in person he stated he wanted to make it more difficult to shoot long ranges. Also I'm not a huge fan of the map design. There's not a lot of soft cover, besides random distributed bushes, but nothing that would give you enough cover pull off a flank. Vehicle physics are wonky right now and a small lip in the road could flip your car. Some stuff the devs talked about posted:TO DO LIST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is there bullet drop? Yes. Are the bullets hitscan? No. Are headshots an instant kill, regardless of the weapon? No, most headshots are not immediately fatal, but it depends on the weapon and helmet. What is a badness score? A badness score is an arbitrary rating produced by a robot to determine how bad you are. No one knows how the robot computes this score, but your best bet to reduce your badness score is to just get good. What is the optimal strategy to win? The best strategy I've come up with is to release your parachute really high and go to a far away location that has decent loot, but minimizes the chance of competing with someone on the ground. Then you find a vehicle and drive it to the next zone and hide it so it's not stolen. Camp with a shotgun. Repeat when the next zone is out of your area. It's really boring though. What's "zeroing distance"? Zeroing distance is the distance your sights are set to hit. If you set your zero too high and aim with your center crosshair, your shots will go over your target's head. If you set them too low, and aim with the center, you will shoot under. What am I supposed to do during the lobby? During the loading stage you need to get lucky so an M249 spawns on a table. Take the M249 and go in the middle of all the people and go prone and shoot all the bullets. This is to get their attention. Then drop all your clothes, followed by the M249. Then while still prone, position yourself in front of the M249 and move forwards and backwards so it looks like your loving yourself in the rear end. Bonus points if someone shoots your rear end in a top hat so it looks like it's bleeding. What are the best weapons? Vector, Uzi, and Crossbow. Is snow loud? I think crunching of snow being loud as gently caress but not traveling far and visibility being poo poo would be kinda neat to play on a small map. Can I play this game on the couch with a TV and Xbox controller? Yes, this is a max chill game that has native Xbox 360 controller support with force feedback. Is there loot on the starting island? Pro-tip: If you see someone go to spawn island, and decide to follow them and camp their boat, it's a good idea to loot some meds before you start camping so you don't die to the blue while you wait. I like it, I think it's really solid. I played a lot of Arma/DayZ BR and it's similar to that, but not nearly as janky as things tend to be in Arma. It's not nearly as stupid and arcadey as H1Z1/Kotk is, it's more tactical. It has some problems, but the dev team is super fast so far at patching stuff. In the closed beta they had patches every week. It isn't a game that's going to stay in Early Access long I don't think.

I've found I'm good at getting gear and surviving to the top 10, but then I have to actually shoot people and everything goes horribly wrong. Having a lot of fun though. Some optimization issues aside, its a really well released early access game.

This looks like the best designed and most interesting game in the genre, but I'm still on the fence about whether I'm really interested.

I bought this because it looks like the least janky of these types of games, and it's a lot of fun so far. If anyone plays on the Asia servers, add me: http://steamcommunity.com/id/bardeh I could use a duos partner that isn't Chinese or a racist Australian. (Australians are cool, just not the ones I seem to encounter in this game that spew racism over the mic from the moment the game starts.)

If you get lucky on where you drop and what's in the first few houses, you'll at least get to the top half almost instantly. Two 2nd places in solo so far, just can't get those last kills goddammit.

Gameplay videos look pretty cool - it seems like there's an FPS mode that nobody uses? If there is an FPS mode, are there servers (or is there a server setting) that lock your view into FPS?

It's a real disadvantage to use it right now because it restricts your vision quite severely compared to playing in 3rd person.

Yeah, thats why I'm wondering if servers can lock it down for all players. I'd love to get more of a long range CS experience, third person shooters just seem super weird to me.

I had my doubts about this but pulled the trigger anyway. I haven't been disappointed. Performance is significantly more adequate than I expected given some of the whining I'd heard.quote:Also I'm not a huge fan of the map design. Nothing more annoying than dashing across open fields (as you literally often have no other choice) and getting sniped. Or seeing someone as they see you and then both of you hiding behind your respective cover indefinitely because whoever moves first is probably going to die.

The twitch viewer numbers and concurrent players on Steam are very impressive for an early access title. I wonder if the devs expected such a big response - there's definitely been some server instability, especially at the start of games.

I'm kind of confused why they have all the guns and grenades at the beginning when you're queuing up. I mean, I know it's kind of boring but it's just that much more for each player to load at once along with all the overhead for the server to process.

LuciferMorningstar posted:I had my doubts about this but pulled the trigger anyway. I haven't been disappointed. Performance is significantly more adequate than I expected given some of the whining I'd heard. Being in the zone first (rather than moving into it as it shrinks) is a huge advantage. The middle of the map has a lot of open areas ringed by forests and hills, particularly the northwest portion, so often the large circle includes both and it deliberately shrinks across the open plains to force people to move without cover if they hug the edges. It's compounded with the fact that you can easily see into the forcefield from the outside so people will shoot you in the back too. Obviously the game is still new, but it seems like the proest strat so far is: Drop from the plane over the first guaranteed vehicle spawn you can find Grab it and drive to a dense loot spot further from the plane's path. Crates are the best (Georgepol, Novo, Zharki are good) and anywhere with clustered military spawns/barracks is second best. Loot, wait out the first couple circles away from everyone else, kill people you come across but mostly the playerbase will reduce itself by 75%. Watch the circle and the direction it reduces towards, move there, try to set up shop in its eventual direction. Always move ahead of the circle. Getting there first means you have the advantage.

That's what the high ranked streamers seem to be doing. Grab a car, race somewhere they know is densely packed with loot, and then stay ahead of the circle and pick people off as they come in. Positioning is so key in this game - if you're stuck on foot and racing towards the circle, it's so easy to get picked off by those who were lucky enough to already be in it or who have vehicles and can easily choose their moment to go. I do wish the final few circles were a bit slower though - there are so many times where I'm basically pinned behind a tree and have to choose between certain death from a sniper if I move or certain death from the force field if I don't. Just an extra minute or so on the last few circles would be good, to allow a bit more time for proper firefights.

I find the more active my rounds are the more fun I have, so I don't mind playing from ahead or behind so to speak. The stakes are so high that every engagement is pretty thrilling. I have total confidence in PU, as he created the genre, has probably watched more games and looked at more data than anyone.

That's what I'm finding charming about this game so far, every game is really unique when it comes to encounters with other players and it doesn't feel stale compared to other shooters. I'm new to the battle royale genre though so it might just be that. Last night I taught a dude that if I'm driving a car at you and you shoot me, the machine spirit in my car becomes enraged and will still run you over after I'm dead. Very next game I got hit with a frying pan in the first 30 seconds.

What I love about this game is it captures the early days of DayZ when it was just about finding poo poo and killing dudes. Also I can join a game and have it be done in less than 30 min. I don't have time to game for hours on end anymore, so this is a great fit for me. I wonder if they are going to have any different game modes in the future.

I hopped in together with a friend on a whim and I'm really positively surprised. You basically get the same general dynamic of mostly long-range firefights and maneuvering from DayZ or Arma, but with not nearly as much jank. The movement and shooting is really quite tight and responsive, even when my already rather old rig has trouble with the performance. I'm not entirely sold on third person, since it makes shootouts in and around buildings kind of fucky, but it's not much of a drawback. Anyways, if you manage to find a silencer for a long gun (i.e. assault or sniper rifle) then grab that poo poo and never let it go even if you don't have a corresponding weapon yet. They're ridiculously useful, as most firefights happen at range and sound is usually the primary way of localising where you're getting shot at from. A friend of mine managed to snag a silenced SKS with a 4x scope, and he could just sit in cover all day long popping dudes in the head who had no idea where to even look for him.

The rest of my squad died, but I went to a group of buildings. From there, I could see a house in the next compound with dudes in it. I kept popping their heads, but they'd be knocked out (DBNO) and I wouldn't be able to finish them because that would drop them under the window sill. Still, I'm sure it was scary as hell for them and I got a ton of damage points. Unfortunately, then the circle moved and I got hosed out in the open. Reminder: Hollywood movies are stupid, if you're sniping a target from inside a house, don't stand right by the window. Take a few steps back, you'll be less open from other angles. I tried this game for the sole fact that it unseated LoL as the top viewed thing on Twitch, and it's pretty good. I generally describe it as the best of its brothers; there are others in the genre that have better base mechanics such as the Culling, but PUB is nice because it's just so *simple*. It does away with a lot of the unnecessary bullshit that is in other games like it and just lets you shoot dudes. These kinds of mil-survival games tend to fall apart when you get within ten feet of another enemy, and god help you if you try to melee, but if they can straighten that out it can be really amazing.

If you're playing with a team or partner and the target doesn't see you, it's best to wait until a couple of you have shots lined up before you open up. Especially if you're a bad shot, don't give your position away for no reason.

I haven't played many duo or squad matches, but the number one lesson I learned is if you kill the first guy you see his buddy will then kill you. I've literally let people walk away completely unmolested and even let them loot buildings I was planning on looting if it seems that I can put myself in a better position for a fight down the road. The realism of the shooting in this game is going to trip a lot of people up but if you're good at planning your moves you won't be shooting at much. Aim seems almost like a secondary skill in PUBG.

Surprisingly good game, I like it a lot. Is it better to kill people than to have a good ranking? Most people seem to always jump together and just go on a killing spree. The way I play it, I won't even encounter a person until there is like 40 left and dying before the last 20 is just really bad luck.

# ? Mar 27, 2017 01:30 |

Killing people will affect your overall ranking but Top-10's, to me, seem like a more reliable way of increasing the overall score. My K/D is rear end (something like 0.35) and I'm still around ~5,000th place in Solo.
