Shame the melee in this game feels so janky thanks to the lovely p2p hosting.

It's more than being a p2p client--you'll see a lot of badness while hosting too. It becomes pretty apparent if you compare it to how melee worked in mass effect 3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eTaCRQNH6g&t=84s

Two things to note about ME3: First, if you are locked onto an enemy (meaning their name and health is displayed), starting your melee within a certain distance of them will rotate and slide you around with them. Second, as long as your melee completes (you don't get staggered out of it), it will connect, even if you're punching someone who got ragdolled ten meters away from you by the time the punch comes out. Andromeda does not do the second anymore, and its attempt at doing the first is very janky and poor. Player melee attacks now have a hitbox that gets checked.

As others have mentioned, it's extremely common to phase through an enemy in your melee animation, and I've had numerous cases where the enemy simply strafing a bit makes it miss because I just glide right past them. Generally my first attack on any enemy works, then it gets weird on the second. This is the part that gets exacerbated by the netcode. Speaking of, melee enemies are really terrible as a client too. I've frequently seen wraiths ten meters away from me suddenly do damage to me, then one second later teleport next to me. This is really fun on gold when they can take your shields from full to 0 in one hit, and people have gotten sync killed by fiends teleporting like this.

Does uploading go faster if you have more people in the circle, or is that only hack?

Is it correct to spread out across the map for upload or to cluster?

Owl Inspector
Sep 14, 2011

That's only hack. You generally want to spread out, but in practice one of them will probably get hit way harder than the others and you need to do two of them and then one. On gold vs kett it might be necessary to do them one at a time. Not sure as I've only fought the others on gold so far.

It needs some tuning IMO. Hack makes you defend one zone which cannot be blocked by enemies and which cannot lose progress. Upload makes you defend three zones, all of which can be blocked by enemies and which will lose progress if a player isn't there. One time we actually lost just because we ran out of time on silver, because we were fighting kett and could not keep the fucks out of the last upload zone no matter what we did, since they can spawn in that intensely. If it's really necessary to have three of them and make progress go down when a player isn't there, at least don't let enemies block progress.

PSN Thundercloud2013

edit - found out that you can't run an APEX mission in multiplayer is you are running a strike team mission at the same time.

Unless this is a PS4-specific problem, you definitely can run APEX multiplayer missions while running strike team missions!

The problem with APEX missions is that players can change the mission back to "custom" and the matchmaker will still throw APEX players into their match. Also, if a team loses an APEX match and go back to the lobby, the mission will reset to "custom". Whenever you queue up for an APEX mission, make sure the lobby lists the mission type as the APEX mission instead of saying "custom", and just host if it keeps throwing you into non-APEX matches.

You don't have to do the gold strike missions - bronze and silver strike missions should pop back up every 6-12 hours. Only throw sacrificial teams at gold missions, because it's extremely likely they'll come down with ptsd/shell shock/stds/etc.

You're right.

There are also more missions available to send strike teams on than there are available to play in multiplayer.

I now have a level 18 soldier, and still haven't completed an APEX mission in multiplayer.

I tried the Silver one with no revives, but then we got upload, and I can't keep a horde out of the zone on my own. I tried setting up another game, but pubbies seem to think rolling with level 4s into Silver with no revives is a great idea.

I also experienced my first kicking after coming first.

For extra fun, if the hack zone is insides building, enemies on the roof will still block progress. I can only presume that this was designed by the same guy who made fiends completely silent, teleporting, sync-killing machines.

They suck hard. I was complaining yesterday about why we even have jetpacks if enemies have perfect tracking and aim, and Anointed exemplify the worst of that with how they can tear you in half in a second on Silver and up if you're in the open or not a shield abusing melee class.

This is true and kind of the problem. It's still early days of this game so there's every chance we just haven't worked out all the mechanics yet, but it seems more and more like there are definite 'best guns' and 'best classes'. ME3 had this to a degree too, but any class was viable on the higher difficulties there, and to a lesser degree most guns were.

Speaking of the bullet-sponge problem: I think the issue is that shots at center-mass do pitiful damage compared to aiming for a weakpoint/headshot. There is a significant difference in killspeed, even when you're using a sniper rifle. I noticed that when aiming for center-mass on an Outlaw Sharpshooter on Silver with a Black Widow, it takes 4 shots (1 entire clip) to kill the bastard, but going for the head only takes 2 shots.

Same applies to full-auto weapons, but the issue is with the accuracy drop-off with sustained fire. Equipping a scope helps alleviate the issue, but some weapons just weren't made to be that accurate. This is why the Raptor is such a good weapon. It has great sustained accuracy so you could dump an entire clip into a mook's head if you wanted to with little issues. Other assault rifles aren't nearly as accurate.

One rifle that might work is the P.A.W., but its an ultra rare. I got it late last night and was messing around with it - it performed decently well, and has perfect accuracy (it's a beam weapon, there's no accuracy degrade), but it doesn't have great sustained DPS, so it'll probably end up sucking.

I had thought Bioware had figured out the assault rifle problem back in ME3 with the introduction of the Cerberus Harrier, but I guess lightning doesn't strike twice.

In related news, do shotguns all suck? I got a Talon and it seems to be a better shotgun than the actual shotguns.

Since ME3 wasn't too dissimilar it's clear that it's intentional--it's just an extremely bizarre and lovely aspect of its design, that both the developers and their core playtesters seem entirely satisfied with for whatever reason. Action games are fundamentally more satisfying when you are killing a large number of weak enemies quickly than a small number of strong enemies slowly. Right now I think I own 17 different guns, and every last one of them feels lovely and weak because regardless of how good they are relative to one another, they all still need a magazine at minimum to kill one loving enemy on silver.

The fact that this problem is alleviated by getting "better" gear only points out lovely balance and the fact that your effectiveness is determined more by gear than skill--it's not really a solution to the problem. It does mean that it gets more tolerable the longer you play though, as long as you don't want to use two thirds of the guns in the game.
